I once had a paladin who died in the boss fight of the bbeg who he swore his oath to defeat. The rest of the party escaped but they never recovered his body. A few months later the party was investigating a haunting, reports of an angry spirit along a road that leads to what turned out to be the bbeg who had gone into hiding. The party was ready to kill the ghost when they discovered it was the fallen paladin who returned as a Revenant. The party followed him as they cut through the bbegs web of secrecy and kicked in his door without warning. Together they finally killed the bbeg and the paladin collapsed as his soul passed on to the afterlife, and they finally put his body to rest.

@@gatekeepingwarlock9604 Let Bards remember; Chromatic Dragons can't shape shift and you have no natural way of knowing if that Red Dragon is a male or female, so expect to need to roll higher than a 20 in a Con save cause either your pelvis is getting smashed to dust or you're getting turned into a shishkebab, and neither ways to die are pleasant. There are countless ways to die in DnD, and Sex With Chromatic Dragon is often one of the worst. Because if the rough romp with a Chromatic Dragon doesn't kill you, their possessiveness, the numerous traps that prey on the weary, the countless angry townspeople and other Chromatic Dragons and much, much more will be your end. Doing it with a Black Dragon? Hope you like getting Swamp Gunk in places you don't want to talk about along with all the diseases that come with! White Dragon time? Congrats, you die of frostbite while trying to leave because Whitey over there wants to keep you around for later. Green more your taste? Well, guess what? Elves will tear you apart the moment they see you and hear what you did, so guess that's another way you will die! Also, remember, dear Bard Players, a Chromatic Dragon that kills you during the opening rounds of snu-snu is gonna be pissed as F that you couldn't deliver and will almost certainly just wipe your party afterwards out of anger/ disappointment before laying waste to a few villages. Should I list more reasons why lusty PCs would need to think twice about bedding certain creatures?

Hear me out: A warlock subclass where their patron is a spirit that didn't go to an afterlife and became a few spell slots and invocations instead of a ghost or revenant. The pact can represent the warlock agreeing to finish what the spirit started in life and gains abilities based on what the spirit could offer, such as a connection to other spirits on the material plane or knowledge/proficiencies it had in life. Maybe even let you use one such proficiency (be it a skill, a martial weapon or something else) with charisma, as it's from a life you didn't live.

Been playing a year and that was my character to die in a campaign. As soon as i got home, i started creating my new Warforged Oath of the Watchers (UA) Paladin. Note: turtles are my all-time favorite animal. I just got a turtle tattoo, Squirtle is my fav Pokemon, and got multiple turtle accessories. Plus, I just really enjoyed playing my character as a less violent alternative (deity was Eldath, goddess of peace) to my party's two fighters and Circle of the Moon druid tank. Only seeked to destroy fiends and undead; made peace with a constrictor snake (animal charming) and Galeb Duhr (solved language barrier with Tongues spell). At 6 level, he killed a hoard of 7 undead and 1 fiend and even took out the lair boss Black Abishai. gonna mis you, Habba.

On the flip side, having a particularly evil PC suddenly start acting creepily nice after being brought back as he spent a week in literal hell would also be funny. The best though; having the paladin come back and immediately become an oath breaker so he can go to hell because he found all of that peace and love boring or the evil warlock acting more evil because he found hell metal as fuck.

death in dnd is really more of a minor inconvenience than a serious consequence of your actions. There's lots of ways around it and to come back from it. Worst case scenario you slap a number after your character's name of the sheet and go "oh look, it's Gothmir's twin brother who is also called Gothmir and has been secretly training off in the mountains for years, so he's exactly as strong as Gothmir and knows all his abilities, and ofcourse Gothmir was left all of Gothmir's earthly possessions in the will. So he's just found himself in possession of some shiny new platemail and the +3 sword of badassery that his brother worked his ass off to get! What are the odds?"

While that's true the meaning death has is only as much as the DM and consequently the players allow. I have 2 examples of how to take advantage of a PC death and make it mean something. The first I will warn is a SPOILER OF CRITICAL ROLE CAMPAIGN 2!! BEWARE! Mollymauk in episode 26 of Campaign 2. each episode is around 3.5-4.5 hours long and there's been lots of interacton seen between him and the rest of the M9. His death had brought a change to the group dynamic and tactics. No longer were they just for themselves or just for who benefits me, they wanted to bring a better change. when half the team was kidnapped all that remained was a monk with trust/anger issues, a goblin human duo with questionable allegiances, and a charlatan amnesiac who died fighting for people he knew for like a month. The second was a one-shot I participated in as a kobold alchemist named Trigger. I demonstrated a close partnership I had with a homonculus familiar named Mona through RP and giving buffs to my team through her. at the end of the session, I died to an inflict wounds crit from a mummy and was turned into a zombie. as a result all my magic was turned inert and in my final cursed moments tied to the tomb I cradeled the mecha-pixie's cold and lifeless body to my chest with bloody tears and a weak moan of her name. I wasn't even well known among the group but I about moved them to tears with that.

@@clericofchaos1 canonically the terrasque destroys anything in its stomach, magic items, divine artifacts, gods, doesn’t matter. It’s gone after it’s digested. Obviously rule zero takes precedent over that, but that’s the official lore.

I actually made a warlock who's big schtick was that he is trying to fulfill the ghost's final desire before passing on because gods are gone and so spirits linger. Plus, due to the fact that he holds many spirits within him, their collective power is what grants him his warlocky powers. He is of the Undead Patron and I even found a way to make the explode-y thing make sense.

I'm currently playing a campaigne with friends, and after a TPK and a brief hiatus we all rolled new characters. Except me, my GM allowed me to bring my battlemaster back as Revanent to help take down the monster that terrorizes the land, and he knows its name and face. Unfortunately that Name is Strahd Von Zarovich.

My 19th level undead psudolitch high elf wizard died last week by sacrificing herself to cast a spell. her final thought was that she was willing to be reincarnated/resurrected... so her soul managed to escape into the body of a dead 32 year old wood elf the party had been carrying around becoming a level 1 undead warlock with her past life as her patron. Last session the party hit Level 20...except for her who managed to get to level 5 as she's now having to level via xp to regain her former power.
