Fun fact about Cloud Giants is that they will from time to time consider themselves royalty among the tiny folk, collecting taxes and tributes from them in exchange for protecting their domain. So the next time your adventures are brought before the king, instead of making it some dusty old human why not make it a shiny cloud giant?

Ah... great summary. I'm *so* happy you pointed out the Nordic basis of giants. That was always true with AD&D giants. Greek influences were mere window dressing. When I DM'd, my players always took giants seriously only when playing may campaigns because I am a mythology lover. In my games, they were sentient beings, not mere monsters to battle... like all intelligent beings. Oh, and the Frost Giant having White Dragon slaves (pets) is an interesting note that changes from campaign to campaign. And Rune Magic only works with some certain extra organs giants have that non-giants can never grow. You can cast Read Magic then cast Write a rune magic thing from a stone tablet of a single page but it translates to the normal magical writing of a wizard, having lots of pages. Even still, the giant's rune magic spell translation may need one of giant blood to cast it for the spell to work. Spell thieves shun rune magic finds, no gain there. When I run a campaign that has half-giants, I also allow the kit of Dragon Slayer... and half-dragons as a race. That dichotomy must be part of the campaign. Dwarves, albeit short and stocky, are really important as the tiny guys who can fight giants. That's a cultural big deal on both sides. Only Rangers who specialize against giants are better in combat against them (Dwarves have their kinsmen, an advantage anti-giant rangers do not).

An important aspect of giants that I think Davvy glosses over is the fact that every Giant has rules for where they rank in the ordning amongst their own kind. Hill giants- how fat you are Stone giants-artistic skill Frost Giants-badassery Fire Giants-Blacksmithing skill Cloud giants-wealth Storm giants-raw power I could be wrong, but I think that’s it.

This is very important, Cloud giants can yeet a creature 60ft If you have a totem of the bear Bar-Bar who wields a Giant Slayer Axe, because you wanted to give her a magical weapon over a year ago that wasn’t going to be over powered for your game at the time- Anyway the Barbarian should have a movement speed of 50ft, you can just keep yeeting her 60ft so she has to use her movement and action to get into combat- It doesn’t do a ton of damage, but watching your player who has thwarted many BBEGs in your campaign, lose their shit because they can’t get a single hit in is the best feeling ever

Ooooooh, I am the last of the giants, my people are gone from the earth. The last of the great mountain giants, who ruled all the world at my birth. Oh the smallfolk have stolen my forests, they’ve stolen my rivers and hills. And the’ve built a great wall through my valleys, and fished all the fish from my rills. In stone halls they burn their great fires, in stone halls they forge their sharp spears. Whilst I walk alone in the mountains, with no true companion but tears. They hunt me with dogs in the daylight, they hunt me with torches by night. For these men who are small can never stand tall, whilst giants still walk in the light. Oooooooh, I am the LAST of the giants, so learn well the words of my song. For when I am gone the singing will fade, and the silence shall last long and long.[1] References and Notes Jump up↑ A Storm of Swords, Chapter 15, Jon II

One has to wonder if humans in D&D have giant ancestry. I know in the Bible humans used to be giants. So if that was applied to D&D lore it would involve humans being cursed by their creator due to an event similar to the Garden of Eden. Having humans originally be former giants could add a lot even if it's a retcon, but it could bring about long forgotten history in some settings.

with a lot of good diplomacy rolls, and some good luck I managed to make a completely functioning society where everyone had a part to play either using their natural talents or their culture with freedom to go elsewhere for those who saw fit for example many of the orcs went into physical carriers that required combat due to their culture and high levels of strength, but ever now and again a smarter orc would decide to be a doctor or a scholar of some kind.

@@firestorm165 i mean if they were frost giants i would absolutely go with that plan but fire giants do like to forge things so increasing quantity of forging material is a boon that has to be considered.

even if it's almost the opposite of cannon, I still believe that the Dragons won the war, because pretty much all Ancient ones have their CR higher than all Giants besides Titans/Empyreans, which are no longer Giants in 5E, & because all those amazing Dragons still dwell in the Prime Material, while some Giant races have moved to Elemental Planes or are hidden really deep inside the earth, the oceans or high above on clouds, as if they'd fled the world.

Not exactly. Look up the Thousand Year War. There are different accounts on how it ended but basically it was a stalemate. Even though ancient dragons have higher CR's, there were more giants than dragons and it was so long ago that there weren't many ancient dragons by that point. Also, this was before Annam was forced to leave the material plane when giants were semi-immortal (like Tolkien's elves).

Every time Davvy tries to shit on Tyranny of Dragons, he loses 1 inch of height and a DM out there in the wide universe denies his players to become zealots of Tiamom that end up getting to be the (living artillery launchers on or polymorphed into) cool chromatic bros betraying waterdeep and the prick pack that runs it.
