Sea Elf is best Elf. Plus I really feel like it follows the pattern that most Elf Subraces should (Being associated with an aspect of nature) tying into the races origins as beatific nature spirits. At one time there where Sand and Snow Elves too.

Ehh, everyone rags on elves as Mary Sue incarnate but that's only because everybody copypastes Tolkien's elves without really understanding what made them work in the original story. Their immortality made them tragic, not gifted - it's even hinted that elves in Middle Earth have no afterlife and if they are killed in battle then their spirits just float around for eternity, whereas humans croak and then move on. Also the reason every elf in the story is a paragon of virtue is simply because the bad ones all died long ago as their arrogance caught up with them. Ironically the only real elf race I like is half-elves. Not too fantastical like dragonborn, not too mundane like humans, they are just right. It also helps they are amazing mechanically.

  • @niknak2150

to be honest humans are bread and butter of fantasy settings and all the other races are like your fillings, you can just have cheese, lettuce, tomato, mayo, whatever else on it without the bread you need some normal in the group tbh, and I just like being a regular human so I can become fantastical with my actions

It's impliued Elves Reincarnate in a distant land in Tolkien, but yeah they don't get to hang out with Illuvitar and aird in the creation of the next world like the race of Men do. Well aside from the rare few that fall in love with humans, then they get to be their Bea's plus one.

Your gm might also let you bypass drow sunlight sensitivity with certain gear, such as long body-covering robes, light filters(eg, sunglasses or black veils) or a parasol. I had a concept of an overly pompous and sadistic drow sorceress that would use her parasol as her spell focus.

I once played an elf that hated the celdaryn. And all other eleven gods, seeing them as nothing but bickering children with powers. They wanted to know the primordial and sought to seek the ruins of aboleths, dragons, beholders, and even the caches of other gods. All to pursue knowledge that the elves either ignored or scoffed at.

I guess in 6th edition we're going to need a new subrace that's an elf that accidentally creates magic items with every long rest and another elf subrace that literally can't be seen by anyone without darkvision.

It's funny how in other settings, like Dragonlance and Greyhawk the appearance of Sun and Moon elves are swapped....so like your common, every day adventuring Elf in DL...a Qualenesti looks more like a Sun Elf but has Moon Elf traits and personality while your not so common, I hide from the realms of Men type of Elf...the Silvanesti look like Moon Elves but have Sun elf traits and personality. When I first started playing Forgotten Realms back in the 80's that through me for a loop. Same kind of deal in Dragonlance....High Elves more common than Gray Elves. Despite the name "Valley Elves" doesn't mean that they say stuff "like fer sure, that 32 inch 8-topping pizza is gnarly!"

I made a half-elf whose halves were Aasimar and Shadar-Kai. Mechanically though, he's just a half-elf, and his stats are more or less balanced rather than min-maxed. I have him multi-classing Hexblade 3/Divine Soul 10. He's super Mary-Sue and also kind of not. Really, he got a lot more out of making a Blade Pact with the Revenant Captain's greatsword from Curse of Strahd than he did his bloodlines.

So a good spin for half elfs would be: the half elf doesn't have part of an elf soul as much as it has a piece of the parent elfs memory. Giving them their elf "heritage" while keeping the elf soul on loop. If a half elf goes into any trance they will see their parent (hopefully if they were responsible) and their own lives. Only. Never really getting the full scope beyond the given memory and their own half elf lives. The elf parent soul now has a blank, where that given memory was, and that blank can be interpreted as the "memory" of their child's (half elf) birth. This would also put a unique pressure on non adult elfs to not even try having kids before adulthood as they may give away a memory of an old elf seeing elves don't have their own memories till adulthood. Would also confuse a half elf in a trance when they go to see a parent and see some other random elf in their place due to the parent elf not having their own memories to give at the time the half elf was born. This way you still have the stigma and taboo of "half elfs are oddities" but explain them a bit more so they are easier to except in elven culture. "So your a half elf eh? How old was your parent when they convied you? Hmm?....oh you don't...well when you trance do you see your parent or someone else? ....ah I see...well that explains that." Responsible parent: "well at least they did their die diligence in raising you well." Young parent: "*scoff* I see... Did they at least tell you it was their irresponsibility as to why you see a stranger in your dreams!?

Kestra Vestigal Goddess of Moonlight (often labelled Goddess of a Moonbeam but she ignores them) looked on in confusion. "So who did dad sleep with this time?!"" she asked her Aunt Sehanine Moonbow who shrugged. "How about find a way to remove curse that artefact Mother's become addicted to? You know the one that Tharrizdun fellow keeps muttering about before they chained him up" "How do I know about that?" "I'm a Knowledge domain deity, it's my job to know and no I'm not touching that artefact not after witnessing what it did to mum!" (Sorry couldn't resist!)

This was really cool and stuff, but from what I've read from the Unearthed Arcana page for the Eladrin and Gith, you either have the cantrips wrong for the four seasons, or I'm reading from the wrong source. Where'd you read about the Eladrin anyway?
