Davinci 18 for iPad - Comprehensive Review
Фильм және анимация
After living with the Beta version for nearly a month I’ve put the new Davinci Resolve 18 for iPad through its paces.
My testing has covered many different scenarios, using it on the go, during shoots, at Home and even in our grade suite at Still Moving.
Overall I’ve found that it has filled a big gap in my iPads capabilities and for me it is a perfect fit.
I’m really interested to see how the app develops and also how it functions on different models of iPad, I have tried it on a 4th Generation iPad Air with Bionic chip and it was able to cut and export 12k braw clips shockingly well!
Can’t wait to get my hands on a M2 iPad!

The fusion, edit, Fairlight and delivery page are in the iPad version and can be unbidden with the shortcut menu. If you go to the shortcut screen, go to the far right and scroll to the bottom where you will see show pages. There you can set shortcuts for those hidden pages. Not my find, another user found it and someone posted it on KZread

This was great and really in depth. Got my speed editor coming in the mail tomorrow! Would definitely love to see what apps you use for filmmaking on the iPad!
Thanks, as someone new to video production and editing this was very helpful.
Great video. BMD has been clever from the beginning with a free version of Resolve, and this is just a continuation of that. Bring the young indi filmmaker into the ecosystem and those who succeed will be with you, makes sense.
This is a fantastic video. Seen that BM dropped the release and I’m seriously tempted to get an M2 IPad now.

Does every plugins for da vinci like transitions works on iPad?
Do you need the 16 RAM option to do all of this or does the 8 RAM option work as well???😵💫 someone please help me.
is there a way to edit between PC and iPad? I want to be able to work on a edit on my PC and then also work on it on the go with my ipad...is this possible?

Thanks Danny! The way I’d usually work would involve lots of zooming in and out. Also I would tend to use the tracks while sorting clips. So as I touch on briefly the cut workflow took a bit more concentration, but I am getting used to it.
Can this iPad version convert Audio Timecode to Metadata Timecode?
How does it compare to lumafusion editor.
How do you extend a monitor?
I’ve not had a lot of time to work with Resolve on the iPad today (and I lost more time troubleshooting the Speed Editor which did not want to connect, and yes I had done the FW update). Nevertheless, I pulled out a Thunderbolt 10G Ethernet adapter, and sure enough you can connect to the Cloud Pod and edit from an attached SSD. With that in mind, you could do some fairly sophisticated on location ingest, proxy generation with a laptop or Mac Mini, and selects editing on the fly with the iPad Pro. Fold in the Blackmagic Cloud, and your project is instantly available to anyone else on the edit team. Then if you go one step further and add an internet connection, the Cloud Pod can automatically upload proxies to Dropbox and a remote editor can start turning the selects into a rough cut. Lots of possibilities with this compact form factor.

Absolutely, I’ve been using it connected to our network with a 10g adapter and also some experiments with the cloud pod. So much potential! Next on my shopping list is a thunderbolt 4 dongle/dock with a good selection of I/O that will unlock some more options.

Did you manage to connect the Speed Editor in the end? Something to look out for is if it’s still connected to a computer with a USBc the Bluetooth module won’t be on. So it needs to be unplugged prior to trying to connect to it.

@@StillMovingMedia What’s weird is the only way I could seem to get iPad OS to see the Speed Editor was to plug it into the Thunderbolt port, open the Bluetooth settings, then unplug the SE with the settings page open. Otherwise it didn’t seem to see the keyboard. It’s working fine now. Just tested it again. And low and behold, even though the playback is a bit choppy, the iPad found the source files on the Cloud Pod via WiFi since I didn’t have the 10G adapter plugged in, and I can still scrub and edit if needed. So the network connection is persistent, which is a nice thing to know.

Don't have my iPad with me, so from memory, enable Stage Manager in Settings > Display, then there are 3 dots at the top of a windowed app (more), click and one option is to send to second screen or something like that.
How are you liking the “experience” on the 11”? Would you go to a 12.9” just for davinci because it would make the experience better or does the 11” have enough real estate to do all the work while it keeping it more portable and easier to hand hold?

Thanks for this very insightful video! Curious as to how you are enabling the clean feed to monitor. I have not been able to do this and wonder if it is a feature in the paid version. Unless lees I turn on stage manager, I do not get the 3 dot menu allowing me to move to monitor. With stage manager on, I get the 3 dot menu, but the DaVinci window on the monitor auto scales and bounces back to original if I try to expand it. When I press on the preview window in Resolve, whether with pencil, finger, mouse,…..I do not get any clean feed menu options as you do in the video. Thoughts?

I got it running - need to have the newest iPadOS running - Stage Manager and Mirror turned on. I used the Apple USB C to AV adapter - power the iPad, run the SSD, and finally HDMI to external monitor (I used a small field monitor - got that running and then just by switching the HDMI plugged into my ASUS ProArt 27" monitor. Just press on the display window for the video you are working on hold and up pops the video clean feed > press and you will see at the bottom of the next pop-up external monitor, press that and you should have it. It all depends on how you are trying to connect to that external monitor. But, when you do, it's nice to see that big image up there and sit back and work.

I imagine first priority is to get a solid app working and reliable. Then I’m sure we’ll see an expansion of compatibility, however some formats aren’t as efficient. Unless you can hook up an Ultraa Studio, you can't professionally grade with this device. Is it compatible?
@StillMovingMedia
Жыл бұрын
The Ultrastudio is currently not supported, though that will hopefully come. That said the way things are going with the 12.9inch M2 iPad having a very high quality display and perhaps more importantly the option for viewing in ‘Reference mode’ which removes any tweaking the iPad would be doing and allows you to select the Color space you wish to work in it may not be too far fetched…. At the moment I see it as a nice way of cutting things, and doing some tweaks but not full on grading. As a side note we have grade suites, ultra studios, calibrated monitors, munsel grey paint 😅 So I’m realistic about where this sits.
