    My god!!!!! Did I really just see that first tumbling pass?!!! The height. The precision. The speed. The sheer beauty. Absolutely unbelievable. Words fail me. Her execution of this entire routine was ABSOLUTE perfection. One of the very few times that, if 10.00 really does mean perfection, it was 100% deserved.

    That tumbling pass is called the Thomas Salto (named after American male gymnast Kurt Thomas) and has since been banned. It was the tumbling pass that caused Russian gymnast Elena Mukhina to become paralyzed. She was supposed to be at these Olympics but never made it.

    That arabian 1 3/4 of somersault and all its variations of flight element with salto to land with hands were banned from womens artistic gymnastics after Worl Champion Yelena Mukhina (URSS) got quadraplegic training it and landing it badly (is called Thomas salto, the risk is underrotating; you land on your chin, overrotating; you land on your nape). This year the Thomas salto also dissapear from mens artistic gymnastics as the group of difficulty dissapeared from the Code of point (to make the gymnast not perform rollouts from saltos)

    @@nogoodnameleft Actually, and unfortunately, this mesmerizing FX did not make the Olympic floor final. Due to the two per country rule, only Nelli Kim and Natalia Shaposhnikova from the tough Soviet squad made it to floor finals. Nelli Kim was given a retirement present, imo. Filatova, Davidova, Shaposhnikova and Naimushina all had superior floor routines to Kim's boring and basic one. Kim ended up tied with Nadia for the floor gold, while Shaposhnikova tied with East Germany's Maxi Gnauck's also boring and basic routine for the bronze.

  • @hjaidar

    @hjaidar

    3 жыл бұрын

    Debido a esa lesión Mukhina no se contemplaba para los olímpicos por eso la presión de entrenador para ejecutar ese movimiento que la dejó cuadrapléjica. Es una pena porque Mukhina era una formidable gimnasta. Kim, Filatova, y Shaposhnikova eran veteranas del equipo del 76, Davydova era de la nueva generación de gimnastas, potentes como Comaneci o Korbut, y por eso fue dejada de lado en el 76 por la entrenadora Larissa Latynina, pero si estaba contemplada para Moscú 80. Ese año fue muy bueno para Davydova, ganó la copa soviética, por delante de Shaposhnikova que era la favorita del equipo soviético, incluso Bela Karolyi sabía que Davydova era una gran oponente para Comaneci, y así lo dijo previo a los olímpicos. Era imposible que Davydova no asistiera a esa justa olímpica y con ello se encontrara con su destino, el oro de la prueba general individual.

    Its so easy to say ever ever ever! Lets be honest here: Did we ever heard from her again after 1981!? Davydova was a one competition (not even) wonder. She was not even good on vault or beam. Her bars was fantastic thought. Now that routine for me was a standout at these games. If nadia didnt fall, she would have taken the aa title.

    Well, in 1981 she was already 20 and went on to compete at the Moscow Worlds - she had been around since the mid-70s and got her lifetime chance at the '80 Games (compare with what Mary Lou did after L.A). By the way I've always loved that vault she did, full-on full-off

    She had a bunch of injuries. This doesn't mean she was untalented, just that her body had its limits. And we will have to agree to disagree on her beam. She may not have been as great as Shaposhnikova and Ungureanu on beam but I don't think she was terrible. She is a bona fide all rounder. I think she took a dumb risk on her second vault, but I guess you are only at the Olympics once.

    Can someone please explain to me why this wasn’t on EF if this scored a 10?! In this code did they get half of compulsories and half of optionals? Thanks!!

    An arabian 1 3/4. It is now banned because skills that land on your neck are not allowed in womens gymnastics for safety reasons.

    Yes, she was a great gymnast with a lot of difficult skills, but I should say that she was only a great tumbler. I don't think that she had the signature ballet-coreography of the Soviet gymnasts then. Just like Kim, Omelliantchik or Boginskaya. Though still a great routine. I wouldn't say it's the best but it sure beats many routines from today !!!

    I would take that routine out of any routine today, sorry. Today just athleticism, no charm, no elegance.

    Davydova did not qualify for the floor finals. In the compulsories, where execution and elegance counted most, she was average. Unlike Comaneci and Shaposhnikova.
