Even though this is for a different track, it's cool to see how you layer the percussion and things and how that would translate over to Tropical Freeze's music. My favorite part of that soundtrack has always been the percussion. This is an awesome inside look at your process. Also yeah I'm sure DK totally just stands for David and Kev, and not anything else.

I wonder if there's any master versions of old tracks like Thorntail Hollow floating around somewhere to talk through the creative processes throughout the years. 15 years ago I got into music after hearing a remix of the Wizards and Warriors theme, and after going through a list of works Wise worked on (after a DKC binge) I found out he made the song that got me into music. I think the magic that comes from Wise songs have the same type of magic that the rapper Biggie Smalls/Notorious BIG had, where the songs aren’t bound to any set theme and can change at any moment. One of the paradoxes of humans is that while the human brain reacts positively to patterns, the other way the brain will become active is if it’s exposed to something unexpected or out-of-line. This is what makes music enjoyable, and to take advantage of both of those aspects equates to literal genius-level music making. Mining Melancholy (Going from industrial sounding to a burst of melodic music) and Island Swing (where the bass almost becomes the lead) And of course the DKC main theme, which starts off as an almost-generic sounding video game theme, and then explodes and comes to life, distinguishing itself from everything else.

I guess this video is cut, because the techniques are missing, only showing the instruments. But I guess it's call, response, syncopation as well as counting notes in every section and making sure they're dividable by what was laid down initially. I wish there was some aha technique that glues scales, intervals, chords, rhythm, harmony, syncopation, polyrhythm together. Without you having to go down a checklist and approach each one separately. I think you have to be a genius like mozart to hum something and it immediately making sense when played back.

Fantastic stuff! How you're able to create something that still conveys so much character while keeping it simple is inspiring! I still have a nasty habbit of making songs too busy. Are there any tricks people can incorporate into their compositions to help learn better technique for uncluttered songs, or is it just constant practice?
