David Umemoto : Infrastructures
Les œuvres en béton de David Umemoto se présentent comme des études sur les volumes. À la jonction de la sculpture et de l’architecture, ces pièces miniatures évoquent des bâtiments temporaires ou des monuments dressés sur des terres lointaines. Les images qui viennent à l’esprit devant ces œuvres sont multiples. Elles renvoient toutes à ce qui est archaïque et éphémère, malgré le caractère solide et moderne du médium. Apparaissent ainsi devant nos yeux des habitations rocheuses précolombiennes, des idoles des Andes ou de l’île de Pâques, des stèles rongées par les intempéries, des restes de villes modernes ayant survécu à un cataclysme, des fragments de cités babyloniennes, des établissements coloniaux ramenés à leurs fondations, des cénotaphes abandonnés au fond de la jungle…

The concrete works of David Umemoto stand as studies about volume. At the juncture of sculpture and architecture, these miniature pieces evoke temporary buildings or monuments standing on far-away lands. The images conveyed in the mind by these works are numerous. They refer to the archaic and the ephemeral, despite the solidity and the modernity of the medium. Appearing before our eyes are pre-Columbian rock dwellings, god statues from the Andes or Easter Island, steles deteriorated by rain, remnants of modern cities having survived a cataclysm, fragments of Babylonian cities, colonial settlements brought down to their foundations, cenotaphs abandoned in the jungle…
