David Tennant's Shock from the Loss of Anonymity Due to Doctor Who

Ойын-сауық

David Tennant had grown up loving Doctor Who, and he certainly recognized the enormity of the role in pop culture, but no one can fully understand the impact of fame in their life until it hits them.

My friends and I saw David at Disneyland with his family. For a second we were going to engage, but seeing him with his kids made us stop. "Let's just let them have fun at Disneyland." One of us said. It was a magic moment, like a hunter seeing a Unicorn and just letting it go because it was too beautiful.

" It was a magic moment, like a hunter seeing a Unicorn and just letting it go because it was too beautiful." I think that's a very apt and beautiful way of putting it. The unicorn (or DT in this case) is something to cherish, to keep safe and the fact that it exists alone makes the encounter a wonderful moment. At least for me. I don't need validation by having a piece of paper with a name on it, or a shifty picture on my phone. I sometimes think the best imaginable encounter with DT would be if I could... I don't know, do something nice for him, like open a door or pick something up he dropped and just NOT react to him being David Tennant. I might grin like a lunatic, but... yeah. Be nice. Just that. (if it would lead to him feeling good about it, too, I'd be on the moon) I've seen actors (small-time, but still known on national television) and not reacted apart from watching them be just normal humans (waiting for a train, looking into shop-windows), so I'm fairly confident I woudl not turn into a crazy fanperson. Once I saw Sting at a museum, and a schoolmate went over and asked if he were Sting (he said "no", but ... yeah, it was ), and I wanted to die from shame. There's someone out wanting to see pictures, or see a show or be out with their kids just... let them enjoy that! Don't bother them. Memorize the moment in your mind, it'll never go away! Just be nice!

When I lived in L.A., my relatives told me that you ignore the celebrities. No one wants to be bothered if they need to run into the store for 2 items about whatever movie they've done...show they finished. When they aren't in character, out there on the streets of L.A. (and I imagine New York, Toronto, London yesus, we all know better) then you don't see them unless they speak to you first & that's not allowing for creepy staring.

I don't really like meeting people at all so I wouldn't go say hi. Also I'm incredibly shy so I wouldn't have the courage last of all I don't want to meet actors because it would be awkward for me and probably an inconveniences for them. Not worth it all around.

Interviewers, if you can’t be Graham Norton be this guy. He actually listens to David and he LETS HIM TALK! So many interviewers think they are the star and not the guest. He’s also mirroring David and giving encouragement to continue.

E J you don’t get it do you? Graham HOSTS the party. Makes his guests comfortable and shares in the conversation. He doesn’t do in depth interviews he has his guests entertain the audience with funny stories etc. Guests repeatedly return because they enjoy themselves so much. You might not like him or his style but that doesn’t make him a fraud. I enjoy different styles of interviews. I have on occasion wanted to chuck a brick through the tv screen when the interviewer is talking over the guest but never wanted to do that with Norton. Still there’s plenty out there if you don’t like one, choose another.

In character, David Tennant's Doctor knew all the cool stuff and how to get around and generally how the universe worked, and helped Rose get to know how things worked too. Kind of on topic. I was down at the shops and there was a couple trying to get in to one that was shut, so I started telling them where they could get what they wanted that would still be open. The guy had a baseball cap pulled down almost over his face and his girlfriend had huge sunglasses on. It was only after a minute or two that I realised it was Matt Smith. I said 'Love your work', shook his hand and then left him and his girlfriend (is it Lily James?) alone as quickly as possible.

Well technically they already did. They did 3 Doctor Who audios at the end of 2017, following 'unseen' adventures that canonically occurred during their time when Tennant was the Doctor. Still not quite the same as seeing them visually together again though, but it's something. :)

Hearing about him describing the warmth and happiness people get from that show, I fully related to. I live in the US, so although I don't get that full feeling of pride and ownership to the show, I enjoy it as much as anyone can. This is why me and a group got together to start an Audio Drama, because Doctor Who just opened up this big world to us with so many far reaching capabilities, and it really impacted everything we saw and did, so much so we decided to pay homage, and start making our own stories and adventures. Always, much love to you David, and I hope that people enjoy our upcoming audio drama.

I loved David Tennant as the Doctor. I saw another comment on here that voices it perfectly, his Doctor is so good at getting emotions out of you. He encapsulates the feelings so well through tone and word choice and body language and facial expressions. Not only that, but he was a funny yet "darker" Doctor. What comes to mind is Planet of the Ood when the president or whoever turned into one. He jumped on how he was deceived and even gave him a taunt or two, but by the end it was a grimace and nothing else. Stuff goes on in the universe, and some are more deserving than others, at least that's how I'd put it. And he sets that so well. He's the only Doctor I re-watch. Amazing actor, amazing man.

I've only ever crossed paths with one celebrity, but I have thought a little about what I'd do in an encounter. If I really like the person, I'd try to give a somewhat concealed thumbs up with a smile and nod. I do still wonder what a celebrity would prefer, though.

The thing about David is, as several people close to him have said, he has a really hard time turning people away or ignoring them, as he himself grew up as a fan and knows what it's like. So he ends up at Disneyland with his family, taking selfies and signing autographs. It's really up to the fans to be courteous.

@@daffy8995 That's exactly why I think a small positive and one-way signal is the best possible way to show appreciation with respect. Though I can also see the argument to do nothing at all, as even something quick and small could add up and just be frustrating and distracting.

He talks about this on his podcast with almost all of his guests, so it seems like it's something that he is still struggling with. He absolutely appreciates his fans and will go out of his way for them. I saw him at a comic con in San Antonio and the line to see him was so long he skipped his panel and stayed in line past closing time. (The Fire Marshall was busy trying to keep lines in check.) A person who worked the convention told me and a friend that they ended up having to charter a plane to get him to another con the next day because he missed his flight.

If I were to meet an actor at the stage door of a theatre or I happened to be passing a film location, I'd feel fine to go say hello - that's a professional situation. But even so, be polite and remember they are at their workplace so will be busy. If I happened upon a celebrity in a restaurant, shop, street etc., - that's their private time so I'd just smile to let them know I'd clocked them and move on.

  • @ScreamingTc

Be polite and use your common sense. Ask yourself if this is the appropriate time and place to say hi, and if they haven't got time to stop and chat don't take it personally. The chances are they probably do have somewhere they need to be, just like anyone with a job there'll be demands on their time. If you find yourself tongue tied, then just admit it and apologise; most people will be gracious and appreciate the honesty and will try to put you at ease. Don't gush too hard about their entire career, but maybe pick out a few personal highlights to compliment them on: The entire point is to keep it light, casual and undemanding so they don't feel like they're deer caught in the headlights of a speeding car. Then ask them for a photo or an autograph if you feel the need, but again don't expect it, thank them for their time and then wish them a good time. Then proceed to walk off, with a smile on your lips and a bounce in your step for the rest of the day.

I like Doctor Who (and my youngest son LOVES it), but honestly, I think it would be awful to be famous, esp. for a woman - you could never go out w/o makeup or in a shirt with a stain on it or with your roots not done or tired or just needing pick up some milk at the grocery. David Tennant is great (my favorite Doctor), but I cannot even imagine the stress of trying to live a normal life where everyone knows who you are. He's so gracious :)
