I’m overjoyed to find other people that have just heard of Sylvian, let alone like his music! For me, ‘Secrets of the Beehive’ is my favorite album of his. This is definitely a great introductory song to his style. What I’ve always loved about Sylvian is his beautiful voice, and just the lyrics that he writes. I want so badly to get his book, ‘Hypergraphia,’ just because his skillful command of words. Personally, my favorite songs of his are the ones he makes with Ryuichi Sakamoto, but that’s also because I’m a massive Sakamoto fan.

Everything you mentioned from the instrumental intricacies to the vocal improvs ...unique and compelling. But the lyrics... soooo beautiful and thought provoking. We have very little to compare with the romantic and metaphysical poets of the 18th and 19th centuries to be sure, but if words can captivate, then I'm all Mr Sylvians.

Hello, JP. Dave from London. Brilliant Trees is in my CD collection, and I love the mellow jazziness and other-worldliness of it. Agree that the bass makes this track. If I have a favourite, it's probably Weathered Wall for its weird, exotic soundscape. Nothing to add about his voice - I'll just say unique.

You are almost there then. The first thing he issued was a poetry book. The first music ex-Japan was on an album called From Japan, to Japan, with Akiko Yano with other Japan members & YMO). He did the single with Sakamoto, then he released Alchemy on cassette tape only - numbered limited at the time. Well worth a review - cheers.

Excellent. I clicked right away when I saw you were doing Mr. Sylvian. David Sylvian's voice is so mysterious and spooky almost. Very powerful vocal. And I love the jazzy instrumentation. Mellow, kind of melancholy, so easy to listen to. Justin have you ever heard Nine Horses? It's a collaboration between David Sylvian, his brother Steve Jansen and Burnt Friedman. I discovered Nine Horses, and by extension, David Sylvian several years ago and I love their sound. And now I hear The Ink In the Well on your channel and realize David Sylvian always sounds cool. Nine Horses had an album called Snow Borne Sorrow and the sound of it is ultra cool- jazzy, spooky, haunting, beautiful. If you have not listened to Nine Horses yet I recommend you hear "The Banality of Evil" and "Darkest Birds" from Snow Borne Sorrow. They are incredibly good songs. Very cool to hear you love David Sylvian's music. Most people have not heard of him. I see now that you do know of Nine Horses. Figures you would have discovered it as well. Do a reaction/review of Banality of Evil and Darkest Birds please!

Those jazz tones do it for me every time I just love the feel to this song, Davis voice is really on point also, still the track 'Brilliant Trees' remains my favourite I find if hymn like and hypnotic, even after all this time I still drown in this song, the album is beautiful but if you like David's work it is not on it's own, several more match it.... George Michael managed to get a similar jazzy feel (If a little poppier) on a few tracks of his 1990 'Listen Without Prejudice' album... 'Cowboys and Angels', 'Heal The Pain', 'Waiting (Reprise)' are all track that I can recommend...

I've still never listened to Japan. At the time they were around I subscribed to a stupid punk tribalism and we would smirk that Sylvian looked like an ice cream sundae with glasses. Many years later I found a cassette copy of Gone To Earth in a Goodwill and bought it because of the participation of Fripp and another one of my musical gods, Bill Nelson. I really dug it. But the only other one I've heard is The First Day, which is quite the monolith. This track here is nice, but I think I'd prefer more of the later stuff. Listening to this song I thought again about Talk Talk's The Spirit Of Eden and how it's a must for you in the future.

Nailed it. A great track, on a fantastic album. The upright bass, the horn, but mostly that voice. Sylvian's my favourite singer. His mellifluous tones, beautiful, and unique. I liked some Japan, but always loved his vocals. Got into his solo work by accident. I'm a Bill Nelson nut, and saw his name on an LP, Gone to Earth, while browsing in a shop. Okay, before your commentary, second time hearing David Sylvian--heard him once on here a while back--and I can definitely say it had a cool feeling to it. A good voice that goes well with the instruments that feel very slick, especially like the bass. (Man, I've never tried to play one of those stand up basses--I'd love to try) But I can't say it does a lot for me. I'm always willing to bet if someone is really into an artist, there must be some reason and it might just not have hit me yet. I could see myself listening to this sort of thing in the background, so maybe it'll grow on me. I don't know--I'll see what you have to say about it!

Atmosphere is a key part of his music, taken to its limits in the long, long pieces like "Naoshima". Once you're in these worlds that he creates, you can kind of wander around them in an aural/virtual way. Is it good or bad? Well, is a swimming pool good or bad during the time you're in it? Probably both! Immersive art, like David's, goes for something greater and deeper than a simple yes/no judgement. Wonderful.

From an interview years ago, David said this song was influenced by the painting by Picasso, "Guernica" and the Spanish Civil War. I have always loved his music from an early age back in the 80's. Unfortunately his more recent work I find a bit off the beaten track and prefer his beautiful voice and lyrics when put to beautiful music.

Hey Justin. Not sure you'll see this, but because you've mentioned David Sylvian as your favorite I picked up the Victim Of Stars compilation recently. Been listening to it in my truck the past few days. Really enjoying it. First time through the first disc stood out, the two Bamboo songs. By the third time, a couple songs from disc 2 emerged as favorites. I Surrender and The Banality Of Evil. Also Jean The Birdman, with Robert Fripp. Are you familiar at all with Leonard Cohen? I'm hearing comparisons between them. Lyrics and great atmosphere, smooth and sophisticated. Sylvian's voice is generally better though. Thanks for the recommendation, will keep listening.

There is something strangely elusive about this song. It has both a smoky jazz feel and something that strikes me as a really subtle Oriental vibe to it perhaps because of the shimmering sound it has. It's a beautiful work. The transitions are quietly unexpected, but completely right in that beauty of expression that is unique and diverting us to a road we didn't know we going to be walking on.

I love to see someone be so enthusiastic about an artist. I'm aware of David, I bought The First Day, mainly because I'm a Fripp Fanatic. I listened to it once, it didn't make a good Impression on me, maybe I need to try it again. As for this song, I do get it! Mature, beautiful and not what I expected. I'll have to revisit Mr. Stlvian. As for Mr. Fripp, check out the Agony Aunts/Toya and Robert's Sunday Brunches to see Fripp acting very un-Fripplike. They have a lovely odd sense of humor and sometimes he breaks out the guitar and does some unexpected covers...

Oh I love this song and the entire album. His great influence there was a British musician, Nick Drake. I find them very similar in the way of character and creativity. Both extremely shy and sensitive... This particular song is influenced by few things. Picasso's painting, and two movies by Cocteau and Sartre. Like... He is genius... Only DS could have written something like that ❤️

I'm not sure if you know, but there's David's biography called "On the periphery". It's wonderfully written by David's fan. As I'm not native English speaker so it's hard to me at some points to understand everything but he writes a lot about David's influences like other musicians, poets, painters, movie directors. An amazing read 🙂

Vocally David has always had that Bryan Ferry vibe, but I love Roxy Music, and I love David's style. Musically his solo career has more in common with Mark Hollis of Talk Talk, they both began in a snyth pop style, and progressed into mellow experimental and ambient sounds with very little regard for commerciality. I must admit I love the majority of David's albums, but he did start to loose me in his more recent ones, when he strayed more into the same territory that Scott Walker did, a lot of it far removed from anything truly structed or melodic and just unlistenable for me. David's work on Japan's 'Tin Drum' album, his collaboration on Nine Horses, and almost all his solo albums though are among my favourite albums of all time. If I want to really chill, he's my go to. I was lucky to experience Japan live at their zenith, a superb show which had the best quality sound system I've ever experienced, like a giant hi-fi. The audience went crazy when David appeared, I have never seen that kind of audience adulation, before or since. I saw him solo on another couple of tours, and the sound and performance were also superb too.

Hi! I'm new here...what a coincidence! I'm currently listening to Sylvian's first solo album. I like the melancholy jazzy sound of the songs. I like how David looked...very handsome & stylish hahaha! This is 80's but does not sound dated like many of the songs of the day that use the then current ways of production. "Silver Moon" would be nice one or "Taking The Veil", both from "Gone The Earth", "Blue Of The Noon" or....LOL. I don't know if you are familiar with "Blue Of The Noon", but it is an instrumental piece featuring Ryuichi Sakamoto on piano & synth, Wayne Braithwaite on double bass and Steve Jansen. Sylvian produced it. Jansen and Braithwaite truly carry that piece. Btw. Braithwaite should not to be confused with Wayne Braithwaite who has worked with Billy Ocean, Kenny G, Kashif, Freddie Jackson and Melba Moore among others.

Nice song but too jazzy to my taste. Makes me think of the first solo album by Sting (a very good one too), very jazzy with lots of nice moods, but personally, really not my taste. I prefer a rock feel. I'm usually not inclined to contrabass, I prefer a good electric bass, fretless or not, but with a bit more agressivity.
