David Soul's infamous jump in that pilot episode of S&H was an iconic part of the show, it still looks good even by today's standards. Despite that I wouldn't recommend anyone ever attempts anything like that, as we can see the consequences can be life changing.

You are so right, the first time I saw that jump in the opening credits, I was, "WOW!" He looked pretty cool doing that awesome seat drop. Who would ever have guessed that little move would cause him decades of misery.

Just watched the pilot movie on the toob and was actually impressed with it. Good story, good pacing, good acting (especially by Soul), and when the jump happened, I thought to myself, "Man, that looked cool, I guess the roof had enough give to it to not hurt him." Then I came across this video. Ouch.

I agree - by far, the best cop show - yes, we planned our week around our shows as VCRs et al were not an option. Through the years I knew he had physical challenges and always felt that he faced them with grace, determination and that awesome "soul" he is known for. I wish he had remained healthy to give us more of that gorgeous voice - very distinct and beautiful. thanks for all David!

Starsky and Hutch was my most favorite series, growing up. My mother, siblings and I gathered around the TV religiously when the show is on… never missed an episode. I love them both, but David Soul was my favorite. I even bought his record “ Don’t Give Up On Us Baby”. I remember every word of that song, up to today. I still sing it. I’m saddened to hear of his death. May he rest in peace.

In my opinion, David is a big star. For his exceptional acting where he really makes it look real like on Starsky & Hutch the fix. He also had more than one hit song. Don’t give up on us baby plus all the other songs. I love the show and have all the DVD’s plus all David’s songs. In fact , he should have been a bigger star. He made mistakes, no doubt. His jump on car or from reading of that one project that made him spend too much money to drinking. But, like his best friend said ( Paul Michael Glaser) David was trying to find himself. We all do per Paul. I’m happy for him him now. Let the past go. We can’t change it, only learn from it. He’s happily married and loves his children and I’m sure grandchildren. David is doing different things. He’s very active. That’s my opinion any way.

@@SusanMiller-ku7dp David Soul and Paul Michael Glaser should have stayed home. Better yet, the movie version should have been scrapped. But as pundits have complained for decades, the major studios have exhausted the limited supply of 'original' ideas. Like "Charlie's Angels"'s two off-shoots, "Starsky & Hutch" [with ampersand like the series instead of 'and' that the show only used its first season] -- to use a '70s expression -- "gag me with a spoon." "The Addams Family" and "The Brady Bunch" squeaked by; were tolerable. While it's impossible to deny Tom Cruise's "Mission: Impossible" franchise's enormous success, short of Lalo Schifrin's rousing, iconic, main title score it's nearly impossible to note any connection to the original CBS series running seven years.* The camaraderie of the Impossible Missions Force (IMF) we came to know and love from our DVD sets of the 1966 - 73 run or the f/x channel's multiple runs is TOTALLY lacking in the tentpole-budgeted, nearly one-member 'team' thrilling escapades consisting of . . . Cruise. For the scheptics who only know the movies, have a look at any two episodes from each of the seasons and you'll be treated to a whole new world. *Starved for original programming during the 1988 Writers Guild Strike, Paramount Television dusted off old "M: I" scripts and its star Peter Graves and launched a remake with a new ensemble cast that filmed in Australia for a new network home, ABC, running 1988 - 1990. "Thank you, 'I Did Not Know That.'"

Repercussions we might face every step of our lives ... don't ever make a split, or otherwise, decision based on ego. It is not the self and it is never interested in your best interest as the core of self is.. Ego can get you killed. Everything in life is lessons or rewards and good or bad, nothing is ever free. The self is that inner voice/gut feeling that says, "I don't know, maybe I shouldn't do this," while Ego says, "Naw, it'll be great." Observe and learn from others' actions or it's immersion for you.

1:17 - 0:24 "Starsky and Hutch' was maybe the most popular TV police show of the 1970s." NOT. "Hawaii Five-0" ran THREE TIMES as long, 12 seasons vs. "S&H"'s four. Also giving "Starsky and Hutch" a 'run for its money' -- "Ironside," "The Streets of San Francisco," "Columbo." THIS competition among these four has great potential for spirited -- and let's hope, legitimate -- 'back-and-forth' arguments and proposals with pundits and fans. But, "Five-0" is undeniably 'the 800-pound gorilla.' Thank you, 'I Did Not Know That.'

I get what your saying, those other shows certainly had more longevity and endurance. Starsky and Hutch were more like lightning in a bottle that really caught on with the younger audience. How many of the other shows appeared on lunch boxes or had action figures made from them? But I think the other programs held up better over time. I hadn't seen S & H for about 20 years and excitedly caught an episode - I was disappointed because the show had became very dated.

Just as well - he would have been a paraplegic if it didn't give. And wouldn't landing very hard on your feet also give you bad hips?
