David Sedaris was a huge cornerstone in my teen years. He, and This American Life, consumed my every waking moment in high school. Ira Glass truly shaped a lot of my growing years. I’ve read almost all of David’s works. This short story is a classic one.

i was just thinking about how I SHOULDVE read his books during HS, here i am now at 20 just read one book.

I just met him and said the same thing! I said, “I’d have expected him to be more snarky and cynical and annoyed by having to talk to us all but he was genuinely so kind, so friendly, and took such a genuine interest in his fans. He is incredibly sweet and lovely.”

I wish I could make a career out of my vindictiveness but I'll settle living vicariously through Sedaris for now

Mr. Sedaris is so brilliant. I love him and his hysterical books.

David's style is inimitable! He cracks me up! LOL😂

@Bob Lawblawblaw I thought so too, until I heard about that "thing" that happened in the fall of 2009. The others pretend that it never happened but they're only fooling themselves.

@@LouieNeira why would anyone? Virginia's JUST above and we have better of almost everything. Other than Sedarises. Ours are third-rate at best compared to those of Raleigh-Durham.

Needless to say, the absurdity of life is not wasted on David

He is very shy. Beautiful shy. They can go together. Most great actors are the same...

i just spoke the phone with someone at an ISP who sounded exactly like David Sedaris!

Do y'all think he scrubbed off the makeup backstage after, or that he just went home like that? I'd like to think he just went home like that.

Remember that "nice" is derived from Middle English (in the sense ‘stupid’): from Old French, from Latin nescius ‘ignorant,’ from nescire ‘not know.’ Other early senses included ‘coy, reserved,’ giving rise to ‘fastidious, scrupulous’: this led both to the sense ‘fine, subtle’ (regarded by some as the “correct” sense), and to the main current senses. If you're "nice" you ignore the fatal flaws in people just to get along. Would you like to take a 3 minute class on how to think about "niceness"? Good! watch They Might Be Giants perform "Your Racist Friend." David is not nice, and I respect him for it.

Marriott has good pillows, they are feather. I normally bring a pillow unless I am staying at a Marriott.

Love David's writing but I hate clowns;they just taste funny..

Comics push the limits of acceptable and recognize and voice the parts of us that we are too timid or proper to voice. Recognizing that we have heard that voice within ourselves is what makes us laugh and transcends what might otherwise be taboo. Not recognizing that we ourselves have felt this way, or worse, pretending that we are too good to have ever had these thoughts is what endangers our future because it is what causes us to censor ourselves and comedians. They are the canaries in the coalmine of free speech and mental health.
