I remember his 1st night at the Apollo in 1988. They laughed at him b/c he was overweight, dressed funny and soft spoken. Rick Avila was the emcee. I looked at him & thought, he might be a surprise. When he finished singing this song, my God. The Apollo Theater wasn't big enogh to absorb that roaring cheer. I knew I had just heard one of the gretest performances ever! They never laughed at him again.
