Politics and political satire has a proud tradition in this country going back centuries in various forms . It’s a useful tool in holding our politicians to account, no matter what side of the political spectrum you’re sat on. Why can’t politics be a subject for humour, it often ends up engaging people in politics, and surely a more informed voting public is better than an apathetic, ignorant one??

Partly it may be that people are unhappy to laugh at jokes not in line with their political opinions but it may also be that the nature of the comedy has changed. In the 80s you could do a joke about Mrs Thatcher being a bit barmy and everyone, even Conservative voters, could laugh. In the 2010s some comedians are more likely to joke about how Brexit voters are all c**ts or all Daily Mail readers. The comedy is crueller and cruder, and the target has changed from the politicians to the voters.

The problem with political jokes is that they're over done and usually quite lazy, relying on people thinking "I agree so it's funny". Another issue is that all the comedians that make it into this country's mainstream are of the same political leaning which is boring (among other things).

I've noticed that if it's not woke - its not comedy material and if it it's not allowable comedy material , we dont see it in the mainstream media I used to adore the rants in David Mitchells' comedic style on the likes of panel shows like "Would I Lie to You" - on mainstream TV. There are Echos of Davids style in the Jonathan Pie character on KZread (although courser) where Tom Walker explores the idiocy and hypocrisy of both left and right politics, even though Tom is a centre left socialist, he will still rant about the Labour Party for instance. It is the media who have curtailed comedy, not the comedians, and it is the mainstream media who are policing Right Speak and slanting the narrative in discourse, debate and destroying comedy, and the ability to become and remain a comedian

The reason we don't laugh at your jokes now David Mitchell is because they are all one sided. If you mixed it up and actually made jokes about liberals/leftists once in a while, we'd be more inclined to find you funny. I used to watch most of the comedy panel shows before Brexit (HIGNFY, Mock The Week etc) but now I don't bother because having watched them, I found they were all one sided, and all against those that aren't in your liberal cult. And also, one only has to read your articles on The Guardian to realise your 'politics is ruining comedy' argument here is one of your own making.

I do hope that my view on 'fattie' jokes doesn't give James [aka 'Captain Backfire'] a new cause to latch on to. After all, my mother in law was so fat, she used to kick start jumbo jets as a hobby. We should not normalise fatties into our society. We need to encourage their weight loss by making them laugh at themselves. We can exercise their 'chuckle muscles' like Ken Dodd advocated for all. It will probably be the only exercise that 'fatties' will ever get and fattie jokes should be prescribed on the NHS.
