The problem is, Lister's statement that the human race will now never truly become extinct is flawed... because unless he creates a situation where time itself loops back, it will indeed become extinct when he passes. He creates a paradox, but not a time loop. Time still goes forward. I think it'd be truer to say that in creating the paradox, he creates an infinite number of timelines... somewhere down the line, it could be said that Lister becomes Kochanski, but in the timeline that we follow, which is presumably the first timeline created after the paradox, he is still very much a product of his own genes as much as Kochanski's. And it's possible that he never gets as far as turning fully into Kochanski in a far-off timeline anyway... here's why: Each birth and abandonment creates a new timeline, yes? So, the next time he impregnates Kochanski, it's a slightly different set of sperm being transferred, because it IS in fact a slightly different Lister.. meaning there's a possibility of him being born a girl next time. At that point all bets are off, since he'd most certainly not live the same exact life as a woman as he did a man, and would very possibly break the circle right then and there.

That's a very darned good argument! :)

But each time he "becomes" himself it is always the first time. The DNA isn't diluted by the loop.

That would be an impossibility, due to the way that DNA works. In that case Kochanski would have no classifiable DNA structure. It is always possible she is Lister though, that's something I ruled out! :P

For an infinite time loop to become infinite you must have no reference point, and for DNA to dilute through reproduction in a loop you must have a fixed reference which is never revisited.

But if it is never revisited, then it cannot be an infinite loop.
