He may come on with a new with a new late night show again, as he already have had 3 and number 3 just got cancelled. First there was "The David Letterman Show" which only ran during 1980, then it was "Late Night with David Letterman" which ran from 1982-1993, then "Late Show with David Letterman" which ran 1993-2015. Maybe he will come out with a 4th show starting this year or maybe 2017? :)

Semantics, the network gave him a graceful way out. The ratings had fallen off a cliff. So did he, the last 15 to 20 years were pure torture. Not sure who that imposter was, but it sure wasn't the same dude that did the two NBC shows.

sd02231 You hit on the key word i.e. 'manage'(albeit, inadvertently). Letterman's management was top notch(look into it)* and for whatever reason, the then " Reigning King of LateNight" , Johnny Carson took a shine to the irreverent up &comer (we can all speculate as to why Johnny felt this simpatico. Leaving aside, for the time being deeper psychological reasons-- Perhaps, something, partially, having to do with his own personal unrealized desire to go "places" ,in a comedic sense and otherwise that were now off-limits to him , certainly since he had become an institution) Having Carson's "seal of approval" early on removed obstacles that would have sidetracked , deterred, or even destroyed others, less well connected, jockeying for position. Yes, it's true. I hate to have to be the one to break the news to you , burst your bubble/ illusions, BUT often it's more about who you know and less about "talent". Look I am not suggesting that the man had nothing to do with his own success but he contributed almost nothing to the creative landscape while being very adept at working behind the scenes to insure his security in the business "show business" *management negotiated an incredible deal for their client- whereby a major studio would essentially pay Letterman to do nothing cinematically for the rest of his life.(other than a cameo for a friend in "Cabin boy", can you think of anything this "comic genius" has done of note on the "big screen"?) Pretty sweet deal , don't ya think? Lol

I love Conan & think NBC screwed him royally. But he was greatly influenced by Dave, even says so, because Dave is the one who truly shook things up in the '80s. Dave was greatly influenced by Steve Allen's antics, even tho he revered Carson, so I guess you could say that Steve was the real innovator. I wish there was a Talk Show network that played all the old reruns of every popular talk show ever made, but I'm sure securing the rights would be astronomical financially.

I don't think so. Dave has definitely let himself go but you listen to him and he sounds exactly the same. You can't tell if he's in his 40s or his late 60s from how he talks, the speed, the intonation in his voice. Brokaw, OTOH, wheezes and pauses and has a perpetual frog in his throat and speaks so slowly. I keep thinking that he's going to die of a stroke right there on the desk.

screwyootube1 - actually, our face DOES get rounder. Consider Marlon Brando, Raymond Burr, Orson Welles, Val Kilmer, Alec Baldwin, and who could forget Steven Segal. I think smoking used to keep people thin, and they died quicker of course. Now, well we just go to seed, get fat, and live so long we see the idiots making the same mistakes we did, and we can't tell them anything.

Broad Ripple High School! It's closed now, but I took driver's ed there back in the summer of 1995. My real high school was Arsenal Technical near downtown Indianapolis, but Arsenal Tech and Broad Ripple were part of the same school district, Indianapolis Public Schools. There was a rivalry. Broad Ripple Avenue, which is right behind Dave, is home to a lot of night life. It's the area where people from Indianapolis and a lot of the students from Butler University (my college) go to party...or at least they did before COVID-19. Jane Pauley went to Warren Central High School, which is about 15 miles or so to the southeast of Broad Ripple. Dave and Jane bonded over their time growing up in Indy. Indianapolis loves Dave!

"I don't know why they didn't give my show to a woman" Funny how a lot of people don't just say a women's name when talking about giving them high positions. They just say "woman". And almost ironic that Dave got mad at NBC when they gave the show to Leno. Then filthy rich Dave got mad at NBC and led the Conan-Leno hating fan club.. Now Dave is mellow and back on NBC as a favor to Brokaw or he realizes that NBC owned the show and he was acting like a socialist? Dave said the female host thing as a favor to one of the interns he was banging?

It was very special because he and Tom are friends and it was Dave's first interview since retirement. I am so happy for him and his family! I get so disgusted with people that think he is just an old feeble recluse escaping from life with his beard. True fans know what a private, remarkable man he is! I have told people to watch his The Kennedy Center Honors when he was an honoree where many people thanked him for influencing their careers.

I worked part time for another 10 years and then retired again about a 18 months ago. No stircrazy this time. I think I adjusted because I went from 20 hours to 0 hours instead of 40 to 0, as I did the first time. In Lettterman's case, it probably helps that he has money and can buy what he want to occupy his time.
