Holy fuck. I love this guy. I am an old man and was around since Dave was. He is just himself. Doesn't give a fuck. Some works . Some doesn't. All in all not a bad career. 30+ years later and I a still amused and amazed.

Sorry, to be known as the best front man you had to actually be able to sing live, which he never could. He was great if you're into goofy karate kicks and drunken douchebaggery.

@@daves4645 I've seen him live (with Van Halen) three times. He sang, he danced, he entertained. It's great if you want to toe the Eddie Trunk company line & claim he didn't sing live...but that's crap. In later years especially, he actually had a better balance of being able to actually move (not just stand like a big slug in a Hawaiian shirt) & entertain while singing the lyrics & singing them fine. The band didn't take the songs down a step in later years as many bands do and he was ON. He wasn't perfect...but he killed virtually every song all three times I saw them during the reunion years. Furthermore, there's a reason EVERY TIME you see a list of the best VH songs, virtually almost all the songs are the original band (Top 30 lists with maybe 27 or 28 Dave songs...even Trunk's Top 20 list doesn't have anything but Dave songs in the Top 15). Those songs actually have lyrics that are fun, timeless...real creativity. One guy is imaginative & considered one of rock's most amazing frontmen ever...the other guy is a derivative cliché factory. I saw them once with the second singer and not only did he just stand still the entire show, he also (multiple times) could NOT hit the high notes...he kept singing flat, his voice got hoarse...hell, there were a couple of songs that Mikey would sing some of the higher parts for him. I kid you not. (And this wasn't even their disastrous 2004 reunion for which multiple shows had entire blocks of unsold tickets.) Anyone even trying the lame "which frontman was better?" argument at this point should realize how long ago this was settled & done with. Trying to claim Dave sucked at this point is as pathetic as listening to MAGAs still claiming (even after recounts & zero evidence) that the election was fake...or claiming that even though more than 96% of U.S. doctors have been personally vaccinated that Ivermectin is the real answer. No matter how much evidence there is to the contrary, they'll keep pushing their lame arguments. If Dave sucked so much, how come people kept coming back for repeated sold-out tours in those later years? After every show I saw, I heard fellow concert-goers in the parking lots repeatedly saying, "He is still amazing!" I almost NEVER hear the 2nd singer's material on radio or serious...and if I do, it's one of their big hits, never deep cuts. From the first 6 LPs, virtually everything gets rotated on regular classic rock radio & Sirius. It's classic stuff. It stands up. Their Dave reunion LP was also amazing. Many reviewers at the time (and at the time of Eddie's passing) called A DIFFERENT KIND OF TRUTH one of the most satisfying reunion LPs ever. And it was. So, be the minority trying to wave that pathetic flag. I saw 3 Dave reunion shows from different tours. All 3 were sold out. All 3, he was consistent, dynamic, entertaining & actually sang well. Since Eddie died, Dave's been quiet. He hasn't felt the need to do weekly interviews trashing the other singer or claiming Alex isn't talking with him because he doesn't want friends or making up stories. Dave & Alex remain close friends (they have for years) & Eddie dying has given Sam more press than he's had for years. Shame he's had to show a complete lack of class by milking it for all it's worth. History has made its determination. If you like bad lyrics & out-of-shape, slobby frontmen, you have that right.

@@51502 Um...no. That's completely moronic. If that were true, how come the 2004 tour had tons of tickets unsold? There were literally last minute sales for so many of the dates, selling blocks of unsold tickets for $10-15. Seriously. It's true. I considered getting one of those tickets for the show when I lived in Toronto, but just couldn't do it after seeing some footage of Sam, fat as a giant boar, not reaching the high notes, not moving...and doing a terrible job singing UNCHAINED or even some of his own songs (he couldn't even reach the high notes in DREAMS anymore). Yes, in 2004, the ticket sales were very disappointing. The 2007 tour with Dave was the band's highest-grossing tour they ever had, I believe. And in 2008, 2012 and 2015, they continued with tons of sold-out shows. Don't get me wrong: I don't reject all Van Halen without Dave. There is material I like with singer #2 (BLACK 'N' BLUE is catchy as hell, dumb as the lyrics are; CABO WABO is truly an awesome song, even with a few really empty-headed lines; "5150" is simply a great song; GET UP has some of Ed's coolest guitar work, though again, the lyrics are very dumb and say very little). I even like a lot of the guitar work on the derided VAN HALEN III album (I think JOSEPHINA is a great song; the guitar work in BALLOT OR THE BULLET is pretty amazing, though again, I don't know what the hell the singer is on about). I listen to ALL Van Halen...but I, like the majority of the band's fans (majority, not ALL) highly prefer the band with Dave. He didn't just do gymnastics and ignore everything else; yes, he was guilty of that during some of the 1984 shows. But, again, Sam was also a very lazy frontman on many occasions. The point is, your claim that folks were there just to see Eddie Van Halen is absolutely ridiculous and can be proved wrong in a single second. If your point were true, then sales of ALL the band's tours (even the ones without Dave) would be as high as the consistently-high ticket sales for tours with Dave. Period. BUT STATISTICS SHOW THAT CLEARLY IS NOT TRUE!! The VAN HALEN III tour in 1998 had low ticket sales. I saw one of those shows; I even met the band backstage. The show was NOT GOOD (though Ed played pretty amazingly and the set list was good, though the old classics would have sounded better with Dave singing). I kid you not: one of my friends asked 3/4 through the show if we could leave. I got pissed off and said, even though I won the tickets/backstage pass, that we're staying for the whole show. (I was really happy that they pulled out HUMANS BEING...great song). Then they tried with Sam again in 2004; mediocre ticket sales. Ed was drunk a lot that tour, so that didn't help. But Sam was just embarrassing (I have a few of those shows on Blu-ray/DVD and Sam is really lazy, letting Mike do a lot of the high vocal lines...and I don't mean the harmonies, I mean the lead vocals). Then Dave comes back. I literally remembering at least 20-25 of my friends/acquaintances saying, almost all word-for-word: "Wait a minute, you mean Dave is back?? OK...now I really want to see this tour!" They didn't ALL go to the shows for Eddie!! They went (so many of them) because Dave was back. They'd been waiting for that for over 20 years! Some fans would go to any show just to hear Eddie, of course. But the choice of singer consistently affected ticket sales. I don't have my face in Dave's lap, as you put it (though, I must admit, that's a pretty funny line). I love Eddie Van Halen's guitar-playing, no matter who is singing with him. But that original singer WITH Eddie's guitar-playing...that is the ultimate combination. Danger/dexterity/good lyrics alongside the greatest rock guitar player except maybe for Hendrix and (a personal favorite) Blackmore...that was the ultimate. People went in bigger numbers because Dave was back. And they kept coming back for future tours because they liked him being back the first time. And to prove I don't just have my face in Dave's lap (seriously, that line does crack me up), if the rumors are true and Van Halen is planning a tribute tour with Alex, Dave & Joe Satriani, I won't be excited for that and doubt I will go. While it would be great to see Dave onstage one more time belting out VH classics with Alex kicking ass on drums (and it would be great if they brought back Mikey), it just wouldn't be right to me to have someone else copying Ed's parts. Maybe Satch could do a pretty good job copying Ed's licks...but it simply isn't Van Halen without Eddie. Even I will admit that he's the most irreplaceable member of the band. It isn't just the songs; it's his style, his spontaneous solos, his energy, his vibe, his technical prowess...Ed is amazing. Dave isn't the ONLY reason I listen to the mighty Van Halen...but he's certainly one of the key components to that classic sound. But fans need Ed too!! I'm still sad as hell that he's gone. Peace, my friend.

@@51502 Indeed, buddy. I love Eddie Van Halen. October 2020 sucked, didn't it? Knew it was coming but was sad as hell when it finally did. Did you get to see 'em often? I'm glad I got to see them a handful of times...never in the classic Dave days, but yeah, I saw a handful of Dave reunion shows, once with Sam and once with that 3rd guy. ;) And I'll say this: Eddie always was an amazing guitar player. (Where'd you get the idea I'm a DLR fan?...LOL.)

In his autobiograpghy he wrote that his manager never forward the call of the offer to Dave. There was a script for a film in 1985 (not a TV movie), then the film co went bankrupt and the deal was null and void. Paradise was in 1988. Don't know if a song as the TV theme for 90210 would have led to a TV movie. Doubt he would have done that. Big screen or nothing.
