David Holt: How to Play the Spoons

Музыка

David Holt is a Grammy award-winning multi-instrumentalist, historian, television host, teacher and entertainer. As a child his father taught him how to play bones and spoons, a skill that had been passed down in his Texas family for five generations. Frequent guest on Grand Ole Opry and other television programs. David won his second Grammy as an artist and producer for "Legacy," his 3- CD set with long time friend and collaborator Doc Watson

I love playing the spoons, I was taught by a fellow waitress while I was waitressing in Halpins in Cork. Once I was searched at the airport and they asked me what the two silver soup spoons were doing in my handbag. I replied 'they're for percussion' and the security guy said 'prove it'.. and so I played a spoon solo at customs.

  • @ThomasPBlack

That was real cool. I'm by no means from a geographical area that would have me listening or eager to learn how to play the spoons. I'm from Brooklyn Ny. However, I had an uncle Abe who played the spoons once in awhile, when we visited my mother sister Lorraine. I used to look forward to our visits, just to watch him perform. That was 40 years ago, yet it has still stuck with me. Today I had a few relatives over and we had our young children sitting around us while we listened to some folk Christmas music. There's no particular reason why a folk song was playing... just by chance. Anyway- I was feeling goofy so I grabbed two spoons joking around, and I began to play them. Having no clue how to do it, Tommy Ken amazement, I was killing it. I must have watched closely and picked it up. So funny. Anyway, that inspired me to look to see if I was indeed doing it correctly. Sure enough, I was. I think I may practice a little and surprise everyone for my Christmas Eve family party. Merry Christmas Everyone- and a very happy and healthy new year as well. Tom.

As a professional chef who has experienced much high-level fine dining, spoons have been my most important tools for the past many years. I think the spoon you highlighted as a poor choice for playing was from the same Oneida set that I own and love for cooking. I never pursued music despite it being deeply entrenched in my soul, and I've tried to learn spoons before but this video was amazingly informative and for the first time I now understand the basics of spoonery.
