Babylon Lyrics:
Friday night I'm going nowhere
All the lights are changing green to red
Turning over TV stations
Situations running through my head
Looking back through time
You know it's clear that I've been blind, I've been a fool
To open up my heart to all that jealousy
That bitterness, that ridicule
Saturday I'm running wild
And all the lights are changing red to green
Moving through the crowds I'm pushing
Chemicals are rushing in my bloodstream
Only wish that you were here
You know I'm seeing it so clear
I've been afraid
To show you how I really feel
Admit to some of those bad mistakes I've made
And if you want it
Come and get it
Crying out loud
The love that I was
Giving you was
Never in doubt
Let go of your heart
Let go of your head
And feel it now
Let go of your heart
Let go of your head
And feel it now
Babylon, Babylon, Babylon
Sunday all the lights of London shining
Sky is fading red to blue
Kicking through the autumn leaves
And wondering where it is you might be going to
Turning back for home
You know I'm feeling so alone
I can't believe
Climbing on the stair
I turn around to see you smiling there
In front of me
And if you want it
Come and get it
Crying out loud
The love that I was
Giving you was
Never in doubt
Let go of your heart
Let go of your head
And feel it now
Let go of your heart
Let go of your head
And feel it now
Let go of your heart
Let go of your head
And feel it now
Let go of your heart
Let go of your head
And feel it now
Babylon, Babylon, Babylon, Babylon, ah

Cherish the moments you had, man. I lost my mom a couple years ago and you never lose that feeling, but the feelings have softened and I've been able to reflect and reminisce without losing it now. Hopefully, someday you're able to do the same with his music and just listen and smile. I'm with ya, my guy.

How beautiful....just a month has passed since we buried mum.....oh my God we sadly only just skim the surface of how magical our loved ones are and the time spent with them is precious. Then when they aren't with us anymore boy do we realise how unique they were and a song can bring all those memories of them back to us....and it's so bloody hard....

I remember in my late teens sitting in a stolen car with two of my childhood friends, in a car park taking heroin… this song came on the radio and we all paused in a moment of life evaluation… for those 2 minutes we shared this song and a magical moment. my two friends are no longer here… yet my life has ended up really good, great job, home, and a family that love me… I’m 40 years old on Sunday, I consider myself very lucky!

Sweet freaking jesus, I've literally been looking for this song for about a decade or so. David Gray's music makes me feel so nostalgic. It reminds me of the bus rides into town with mum as a young kid, his music was on the radio a lot back then in the early 2000s. My town (Christchurch City, NZ) changed so much after the earthquakes and isn't the same anymore. So this music takes me back to a better time 💜
In France, "Babylon" was on heavy rotation on radios by summer 2000.
Shocking that this song has only 17 million views in 10 years as it should have atleast 10x that. Well atleast there's 17 million people in this world that know what proper music sounds like

My brother died today.. I was working with him. He was diabetic.. He told us his blood sugar was low.. He had glucose tablets in his backpack and emergency diabetic supplies. We offered him some food not even 5 minutes before he fell. My friend we were helping with a job told me my brother was on the ground. I had just seen him a minute before that standing up. We didn't have cell service where we were at.. We carried him to the truck and drove to the nearest house. They let us come in and we began chest compressions my brother had stopped breathing. I gave my brother mouth to mouth.. I felt his hands grow cold. I watched as his face turned pale. We continued for 30 minutes before emergency vehicles showed up and continued on for another hour... Until there was nothing we could do anymore. I watched as my brother was zipped into a body bag... I cried... I couldn't cry. Then cried some more. I prayed. I pleaded. I let go. I decided to try to finish the job my brother and I started.. On the way back to unload the lumber... This song played on the radio... So beautiful. Rest in peace brother Jesus has you now. This isn't goodbye... I'll see you later... Until then I'm gonna strive to make you proud... You will be sorely missed. I love you always. I know you'll always be with me.. You wont have to suffer anymore. I'm gonna miss you. Until we meet again my friend!

Me too. Very emotional record
The song's theme suggests that just like the city of Babylon (the 3rd World Power in human history) was kept safe by walls too high to scale and the Euphrates river as a giant moat surrounding it on all sides for miles, a fragile human heart will desperately try to shield itself from pain and regret by creating all sorts of barriers designed to keep harmful people out and peaceful solitude in. The downside is that such a strategy also keeps helpful people out and painful loneliness in as well. In order to live a full life, a person HAS to let go of fear and doubt to be free to truly enjoy his/her time on earth.

This song came out when I was 23, and now I'm 45. Almost half my life ago. I'm not sure what made me think of this song. Being in a place now, traveling for an extended period, where I'm contemplating everything that has ever happened in my life and the music that draws me to those memories. This song has has a special place in my timeline.
It finally happened, I finally found the song!! It played in my head for more than a decade!!!!!!

Yeah it came out in like 1999 or 2000. I had a basset hound named Elvis at the time and any time this song/video would come on he would come running From wherever he was and stand in front of the TV and bark his head off until it was over. It was hilarious. 🤣 I don’t know what it was about this song but it’s the only one he ever did that to. So of course I think of him any time I hear this song. But it’s a great song from a GREAT album and I highly recommend you checking out the rest of this album for sure. It’s absolutely fantastic. Glad you found it after looking for it for so long. I know what that’s like and it can be maddening! 😜 Seriously…check out the whole album. You won’t be disappointed. ❤

To my ears, this might be one of the finest songs of the last 50 years. This song was a hit on the radio when I visited my family in England back in summer 2000. I bought the cd at Gatwick before my flight home and this song has never left my playlist.

It’s great hearing how this song makes people feel nostalgic. I was born at the tail end of the 80s. Back in 2000 this song along with a few other artists was some of the first music I listened to that wasn’t my parents influence (they still think 70s music is the best). The video is a great representation of London at the end of the 90s. It’s good to relive those memories.
This has been an earworm of mine for years. I can often be found doing mundane tasks and singing this song
This always reminds of 2000's Ireland. Being a kid enjoying school, sun and the end of the Celtic tiger and some of the best memories of my life.
When this was released I was living and working away from home. I was lonely and not very happy. I heard this on the radio, went out and bought the album and played it in my little flat. It cut through me like a knife through butter. It is, without doubt one of the best songs I have ever heard. So full of depth and melancholy and meaning. Thanks David, you're a star. BTW the live version you did at that concert in Switzerland was wonderful.
Such an unassuming, simple, but perfect and beautiful song. Takes me back!
my sons were messing around with my mom's old record collection that she gave me. My mom has records since the 1940s. I also have glass records from my grandmother since the late 1800's.. I had a large cassete tape collection that is gone now and a lot of my cd collection is missing which is a long story. My sons were messing with the records I had left, cassettes, and cds. they were messing with my old cds and talking about them with me and then they found David Greay. I was a dj in highschool and college. I was working on an associates in radio broadcasiting and I was working at a cafe on the campus. I was a dj on college radio for years and was an intern for a lot of stations and I remember this was one of my favorite songs to play. The entire album is so amazing and unique. Once the cafe closed and I was totally discouraged by my father and transferred to a different job I felt I was going nowhere. I gave it all up to marry my middle school sweetheart who was in the navy when we graduated highschool.. I have been with my husband my wholle life and we are very happy still, but I gave up a lot of dreams. I was a dj for a long time and this song was huge then. It's too bad that it faded away in peoples memories. It's still good. It's still a gem. Thanks David Gray for all of the good memories. You are still an idol in my heart and am icon at everything I deejayed. I have a lot of fond memories with this song, and now my sons will too.. My husband does also, God bless!

This song hits me in so many ways. So many memories. David gray, what a singer!
I love this entire album so much. Every song peels back another layer and it surprisingly raw for a lot of it. The first song is Please Forgive Me which is kind of a quirky song and then this masterpiece. The album ends with Say Hello Wave Goodbye which makes you feel like Buddy Holly just died in American Pie for 9 minutes.

This song should be a monument in the history of music.
Yes it is true, David Gray is underrated! He is a gifted artist! I never grow tired of listening to Babylon and other great songs that he has recorded! Thank you, David Gray for enhancing the world of music!
When i was a kid, we used to go on holiday to Spain every year up until the financial crash. Our first time there, my dad bought White Ladder an had it on the CD player on our rental car. Hearing this brings me back to happy memories. Thanks David.
Such an emotionally charged song....Sung with strong emotional energy....Honest Sincere Vocally caressing my heart
This is the song of an entire generation. Thank you David for creating such a tune.
There is something special to me of songs that came out in the late 90s and the year 2000. Even though I didn’t listen to this song around that time (I honestly didn’t learn about this song until recently), it feels nostalgic to me. I’m really grateful for David Gray for composing this masterpiece of a song. I have honestly been listening to it on loop for the past several days now.
Love love love this song! I'd forgotten just how good it made me feel and came across it here and had to play it. Still fabulous all these years on........

In the 2000’s I had a daily commute of 1 hour and 20 minutes each way … David Helped Me get through that Commute… Great Driving Music… Thank You David ❤️
Such a beautiful song, every time I hear it, it brings back the year 2000, when we had one foot still in the 20th Century, and the other in the 21st, the comfortable past was slipping away, and an unknowable future coming at us like a freight train.

I ama musician of 40 plus years very fortunate to make my living playing music This song is oneof my all time favorites. Melody, percussion, phrasing, story, chords.......I do play it from time to time and like all the classics I may get it right one out of ten times I do it. Such a challenge to deliver it. Anyway, top 20 songs all time along with artists like Prince, Sting, Zeppelin, Neil Young, Ray Charles, Leon RUssel, Sinatra, this song resonates.........
This is an absolute classic. I play it on loop frequently, love the video too. David is so underrated, its unbelievable.
My favourite song. Takes me back to when times were so good and life was simple. ❤️
All my mates here in australia remember me for binging davids albums from the uk to oz .and my god how many new ones i had to buy .from them borrowing and never giving back .lol ps i won a karaoke singing sail away .i lov his music always have .
To me this song not only defines the feeling of the 1990's but it was a song that hit me directly when I went through a horrible breakup almost exactly the time this song was soaring through the charts......
