David Gariff on Minimalism, Part 13
Referred to variously as “ABC art” or “primary structures,” minimalism displays the reductive aspects of earlier modernist trends that embraced geometric abstraction in painting and pure geometric forms in sculpture. In direct opposition to their abstract expressionist predecessors, minimalist artists sought to eliminate concepts of self-expression and subjective emotion. Painters and sculptors associated with minimalist practices include Donald Judd, Tony Smith, Dan Flavin, Frank Stella, Ellsworth Kelly, and Robert Mangold. As part of the series Celebrating the East Building: 20th-Century Art, senior lecturer David Gariff surveys the art and theory of minimalism.

He's very good, the best words about art are from artists, in this case Judd is the obvious one.

Thank you David for this fabulous presentation! What an education!
I remember when this new I M Pei East Wing opened back decades ago. I was particularly impressed by the large Motherwell hung on the wall near the stairwell, which was commissioned specifically for that space. I believe a large Calder was hung from the ceiling. Nice lecture. Thanks for sharing.
That Serra pole and plate thing - the huge one - almost gave me a panic attack just looking at it. Seriously, same feeling looking over a huge cliff. Well done.
Thanks, David! Tony Smith is one of my favorite artists and I alway enjoy your lectures!
Woody Allen could do a great comedy on this guy

My 9,year old grandson, who has studied visual Art with me for eight years asked me one day at the age of six, “Grandaddy, if i put a - DOT - on a canvas - (then he paused a moment), CAN I PUT A DOT ON A CANVAS AND CALL IT ART ? (UNDERSTANDING IS THE KEY THAT UNLOCKS THE DOOR TO THE MAGIC) - TIME AND SPACE 0R TIME/SPACE IS NOT APPLICABLE AT THE CONSCIOUS STATE OF BEING, THE REALITY STATE OF BEING - AT THAT STATE OF BEING WE ARE SCIENTIFICALLY QUANTIFIABLY 1 - THUS SPARKS THE CREATIVE PORTAL - IF ONE IS TO STUDY VISUAL ART FIRST STUDY THEORETICAL PHYSICS - METAPHYSICS AND PHILOSOPHY - THAN AND ONLY THEN PICK UP THE BRUSH - (or study with your grandaddy, which ever comes first)
