in the Philippines we are just happy to come to USA, we can make our own money to save with our partner, that attitude is not common here. In places like Thailand and Viet they tend to be Buddhist mainly or Muslim. We are Catholic mainly so yet there is a cultural difference still, rarely will you see this in the Philippines. It is why most Philipinas will go into the Medical field to earn a solid living despite if their partner is rich, while their way normally is to live off their man and cut nails with no aspersions to excel themselves as they will always be taken care of by the rich spouse that they were originally seeking.

It depends on family usually in line with the girls education and looks. Some also family socioeconomic status. For example a girl with bachelors and a decent job and educated from a middle to upper middle class family 300-800k thb as dowry. Usually returned back to you but not if they are lower middle class or working class. If they are celebrities then it can reach into the millions of thb and gold just for appearances sake and they just return it. Some girls that are just average looks and average education from average family. Maybe 200k and a couple baht of gold. I’ve seen Thai families end in perpetual debt due to dowry and putting everything on loan

Dowry is not based on your wealth or education it’s based on how much your partner is willing to give to persuade your brides family you can look after her. It can depend on virginity too if you have been married before or have a child before the amount will decrease. In this case the man is putting fake images for her that’s why she and her family think he’s capable to pay more. Hope this helps to explain things.

@Diana Ciocan the dowry is a Thai tradition but the amount depends on the situation. In his situation he’s broke and have no job for 11 baht dowry it’s about £7,000 or $8,000 that’s not including the celebration the ring and honey moon.

He can’t afford an American wife let alone one who is over seas. He needs to seek out his high school sweetheart and hope she has a heart of gold and doesn’t want him for the money.

Everything she says is straight up. Dowry is very traditional. I've been with my wife, which is Thai for ten years. 300,000 is common and gold. My wife and I communicated 4 years before I came to Thailand and planned our wedding and now it's 6 years later and all is well. I paid all the money traditionally required and low and behold my in-laws gave me everything back to my amazement. In my case I believe they were just making sure of my commitment. I did give them a nice amount back though. My wife and I both wanted to. The Thai girl in my opinion is not a gold digger, but why should she marry someone that has very little.
