it should be on talking heads album "more songs about buildings and food" ...david byrne once said something like "i tried to sing banal lyrics with lot of emotion" and this is the modus operandi that gervais pilfered, with less success.

If there was a poll listing the greatest places to live and work in the UK Slough wouldn't be very near the top I am sure - no offence to Slough people. Because everyone puts it down all the time, he wrote a song 'praising' it, but obviously tongue in cheek. In the film, just before he performs this, he says 'Slough is the greatest place in the world' - if someone wrote a song about football and said that Dartford were the greatest football team in England it would be obvious they were being ironic, rather like Ricky Gervais saying Slough is the greatest place on earth is him being ironic.

Listening here in 2024. I love this song ♥

I do like that half the song is spent just mentioning the other towns that are nearby.

Love this song, for some really makes me really sad. Just a guy who is struggling with life, been dealt a really bad hand, but loves his town and where he’s from,

Comedy aside this is actually a killer song. Very Bowie / Elton John. Good melody, great use of instruments. You can tell Ricky likes the music just as much as the comedy aspects.

My condolences

Slough even though not the prettiest town, I spent some of the best moments of my life during the first lockdown in UK, sneaking all the way from Reading to Slough every night so that I can see my girlfriend who used to live there.

It almost brings me to tears because the story of the Office is the sad downfall of David Brent and in this song he’s sort of trying (and failing) to sing his troubles away

Satire at it's musical best. Brilliant. Lovely orchestration, annoyingly catchy and sung with the full sincerity of David Brent. Nice one Mr Gervais.

This song is only partly ironic, which is what is so brilliant about it. A bit like the brilliance of the David Brent character.

It's equidistant between London and Reading... that's the genius of its location. Even though I don't live there, and I do hate it.

As a Slough boy from the 80s, Slough was a fantastic place to grow up in the 80s and early 90s but unfortunately it's died a death and is only a shadow of what it once was, even Brent's intervention can't save it nevertheless this song brings back good memories.👌👌

@Jonathan Healey I think it's lack of investment, it was a thriving vibrant town with independent stores etc but I do believe online shopping, lack of investment and putting pound shops to fill units has led to a decline. I know this has happened all over the country but I have seen it with my own eyes, working in Slough in one of the busy centres for 10 years and seeing the gradual decline. The centre I worked in had wonderful staff and it was sold over and over again to simply make money.

What's it like?

Ricky Gervais, I got the album yesterday, and I must admit that I love it! I was checking the album last night with my missus, and she said that the music is great and if not the lyrics it actually could have been on world chart ;) we also agreed that all people who don't understand english will probably treat it as some new great rock band

He is a very talented musician, but kind of knows that doing it for real alongside his other stuff might be pushing his luck with critics a bit. I like how he found a way to have his cake and eat it though! My favourite spoof musical character is Brian Pern, but despite the character and mockumentary style being perfect, the songs and production are just weak ‘comedy song’ pastiches that undermine the idea that Pern is up there with Peter Gabriel. Gervais’s work is absolutely pro level.

I remember the old Tescos before the mega-Tesco's arrived, with the dark and dank underground foot tunnel to the bus station. And the grey concrete Unisys building. Happy Days!
