David Bowie - Zeroes, 2018 (Official Audio)

Музыка

Official audio of Zeroes (2018) by David Bowie, remastered by Mario McNulty for the forthcoming Loving the Alien (1983 - 1988) box set. Buy now: lnk.to/LovingTheAlien
ZEROES, the lyrics of which reference Prince’s Little Red Corvette was Bowie’s salute to the ‘60s. He described it as “The ultimate happy-go-lucky rock tune, based in the nonsensical period of psychedelia”. Mario McNulty commented, ""Stripping this song down to its core revealed a track that could have been right at home on Hunky Dory, I kept Peter Frampton’s sitar (which was originally owned by Jimi Hendrix) as it still fits against the new guitars from Reeves Gabrels”.

About David Bowie:
David Bowie redefined musical genres and the potential of live performance for generations of music lovers. Creating and discarding a variety of personae and restlessly challenging musical boundaries, Bowie released timeless albums including Space Oddity, Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust…, Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Young Americans, Station to Station, "Heroes,” Let's Dance, Heathen, The Next Day and many more. Blackstar, Bowie’s 28th and final studio album, was released on his 69th birthday, January 8, 2016. David Bowie died on January 10, 2016, two days after the release of Blackstar. His body of work, his influence on the worlds of music, art, fashion, film, theatre and beyond, and his legacy of innovation and reinvention will live forever. 2022 kicks off with Bowie at 75, a celebration of his 75th birthday with the Brilliant Adventure box set, the previously unreleased Toy, the 50th anniversary of Ziggy Stardust and a series of special events.

I miss him... started following him when I was 6-yrs-old... that was 1968... have loved him for 50 years. Fell in love with Iman too. I don't even understand the effect he has on me, but he has always felt like a bright shining light of love, lifting me up, soothing my soul, making me feel everything's all right. Miss him.

This song was on his 1987 album Never Let Me Down. This is just a more stripped down version of the song. Of course that album was one of Bowie's weakest albums so not surprised many comments are reacting to this as if it's a new unearthed never heard before song

Jason Harshman Yeah, I recently came to know that. I started listening to Bowie in the mid-90's. Never Let Me Down is his only album that I do not have, and since this song isn't played in the radio at all, I somehow missed it. Time Will Crawl is my favorite out of the two or three songs I've heard from that album.

Bowie himself disavowed his album, "Never Let Me Down" from which this track is taken from. For being too bombastic. But it goes to show how beautiful some music can be if you strip back some of the over-layered melodies that was on the original track. Song-wise I thought this album had stronger songs than his two hit albums of the 80s, 'Lets' Dance' and 'Tonight'.

He loved this album and enjoyed touring it and was convinced with the songs but the over production was a bit too much and some of the songs addresed Melissa Hurley and that is an another reason, mind you. I love this album and it was Bowie goung back to shape and it foreshadowed the harder rock direction of tin machine. It was a step in the right direction.

Bowie distanced himself from NLMD when the critics panned it. In turn, many fans took a cue from Bowie and kept their distance. Plus, it's important to consider Bowie's fan base at that time. Many of his older, original fans (like me) felt alienated beginning with Let's Dance. We were replaced by new ones, who actually began leaving the pack when Tonight came out. I've always seen NLMD as kind of a sad little orphan album without much of a support group. I'm one of the few long-time, hard-core, Bowie fans who actually likes this record. I agree with you that NLMD has a stronger setlist than Let's Dance and Tonight. I've always been bothered by how much flak NLMD has gotten over the years, while Let's Dance gets lauded and Tonight wiggles off the hook. It's fine if people don't like NLMD and criticize it, but I feel they should be just as harsh as the two predecessors. My biggest criticism of NLMD is how it was engineered ... which is very odd, given Bowie's major league status. The album has a light, tinny, sound. These 2018 re-imaginings really beef up the sound and I like them. It's too bad Tony Visconti, Carlos Alomar, George Murray and Dennis Davis weren't brought in to save the day!

I love that they're remastering & remixing this album, but I really hope they don't completely re-do the instrumentation on all the songs like they did here. The best part of the original album was Peter Frampton's amazing guitar work. Definitely give the original a listen if you haven't before, especially this song.

  • @Adrianovaz2007

With all due respect to Frampton, the original was overbloated. All those 80s unnecessary flairs swallowed Bowie and the melody in it, this one is crystal clear and it still includes wotk by Frampton (like the sitar).

  • @VinchVolt

    @VinchVolt

Mario McNulty, who's producing the 2018 version of NLMD, said that he'll be keeping certain parts of the original instrumentation that he saw as too distinct to ignore; this is already visible with the retention of the sitar part here and the twinkling arpeggios in Time Will Crawl 2008 (which I assume will be the version included on NLMD 2018, given that the song and album use similar production techniques).

Interesting fact: this song was originally in "Never Let me Down". Which Bowie also sang in Indonesian language as "Jangan kau Susahkan hatiku", and in Bowie net, he revealed that he felt like Home whenever he's in Indonesia. And guess what else, his ashes are scattered in Indonesia too. I never get the chance to meet him, but who knows, maybe I accidentally inhaled him a bit 😬. Truly a legend, the man who fell to Earth

Gunung Merapiapi : No, you're getting things mixed up. Bowie only ever sang ONE song in an Indonesian language version. That was Don't Let Me Me Down And Down - which is on the Black Tie White Noise album. And the Indoensian language version of that track is not on the original album release. It's only on a couple of much later issues.

Gunung Merapiapi : No. The song 'Amlapura' is all in English. "Amlapura' is the only word in the entire song that isn't English.

I do not know why people compares Bowie to God. I know he's good, but he's not Bowie ...

I really enjoyed the reworking of "Time Will Crawl" and imagined what the whole NLMD album would sound like if revised. According to the interview with Reeves Gabriel played on Shaun Keaveny BBC Radio show, David had left instructions to record an updated version of NLMD going as far as to pick the producer and musicians for the new version. David had said he really liked many of the songs but felt he was not involved enough in the production of the album. Basically, he gave the record company what it wanted. This version of "Zeroes" sounds fresh and more polished. I am really looking forward to this box set.
