Bowie was an immense talent and a wonderful human. One example is when MTV was in its infancy and he called them out live on the air during an interview for not playing black artists except from 2-6 am. I think it was Mark Goodman interviewing and he said they had to play what the kids in middle America wanted to hear and he thought they’d be afraid of Prince and didn’t think they were interested in many other black artists (except MJ). Bowie asked if he knew what seeing Marvin Gaye on MTV would mean to a black 17 year old and then asked if that kid was not also part of America. He was polite, but he didn’t back down. It was a bad look for MTV to have someone of Bowie’s iconic status call them out on their own network and it wasn’t too long before they started to play more black artists during prime hours.

Yes, he was polite, but some of Mr Goodman's answers had David shooting daggers out of his eyes. He was not pleased.

I always prefer David as a singer because he has such a special tone and like you said he tells the story..

He had throat issues prior to the concert which was almost cancelled because of it, hence the raspy falsetto. Nothing to do with age.

Was just watching this vid last night! And there's another performance of this song from that same year that's just him and piano that is absolutely stunning. You're spot on about the storyteller vibe. David always brings the drama and makes every word count. He originally did this song as a tribute to his v good friend Nina Simone ❤

His original recording of this song appears on Station To Station (1976). I believe Nina Simone was the original recording artist. They were good friends. She once held up a nightclub concert until he arrived.

I think, for me, Bowie's best vocal ever was his live version of 'Heroes' from his 1978 concert album 'Stage.' It builds and builds and builds to this wonderful crescendo.

When he was young, Bowie wanted to be a crooner.

This was recorded 2 days after his 2000 Glastonbury headline. Whoever was in charge of sound at the bbc that night got it spot on.

Bowie had one of the greatest voices in the history of popular music! :) You should listen to the album version (album - Station to Station). Although still great , he wasn't at his best here, as he was suffering from a throat infection.

Every singer will develop a broader vibrato with age. It's an inevitable result of aging. The vocal cords just get looser. I'm dreading that day myself. PS Have you listened to "Space Oddity"? David's voice was pretty great on that one.

Yes, it's interesting to think why DB is not generally applauded for his vocal powers. Maybe because he puts so many different styles into it, even within one song. Saw one reaction from a singing teacher claiming DB wasn't a real singer, just got by believing he could sing. Good to hear a more informed contrary opinion. Well, to add to the list of great versions of this song, let me recommend Jeff Duff, Sydney Opera House version. Fella had same singing teacher in Melbourne as Farnham. Oh, and Johnny Mathis I believe did this originally, for a film of the same name. Very different version again.

That's a weird opinion from a vocal teacher. The man had a 60 year career, just "believing" he could sing? Lol
