    Hi JP ! He was actually referring to Marc Bolan, a friend of his who achieved success a few months before him, being an assential precursor of Glam Rock in the process with his band T. Rex. A giant portrait of Bolan was projected on a screen behind the scene during this song on the Ziggy Stardust Tour : A way for Bowie to express both his admiration and his desire to start a friendly emulation 🙂 !

    Observations just as good on the second go-around. You nailed the Soul influence. The piano is great too and I like how the first chord change in the first phrase doesn't go to the dominant or subtonic but to a diminished fourth which gives the character of the song a slight tilt because it's exploring someone unique but mysterious in a nocturnal urbanscape for sure.

    Justin if you enjoyed Ronson on piano check out Lou Reed's song "Perfect Day" it's off of his album "Transformer" which he co produced with Bowie. Lou Reed flirted with glam for a few years in the early 70's. There are photos of him hanging out with Bowie and another Bowie associate Iggy Pop back then. Ronson's piano is sublime and beautiful on that track. On an unrelated note. I was lucky enough to see Ronson on piano in concert with Vancouver band "The Payolas" in 1982 on their first tour. He had produced their album and was a guest on the tour.

    While reviewing this album i hope you will also include the non-album single "John I'm Only Dancing" which was left off in favor of "It Ain't Easy". It was the follow-up single to "Starman" and was finally added as a bonus track on the Rykodisc re-issue in the States.

    Great tune from this stellar album, as said before a tribute to his mate Marc Bolan, I live not far from the spot in Barnes in UK where Marc Bolan was tragically killed in a car accident in 1977 people still leave flowers and tributes on that spot to this day, also have visited the spot where the Ziggy Stardust album cover was taken, Heddon Street off Regents Street in London a rock landmark. Even took it to youth group camp that summer I was so attached to it/him! Like all my collectibles, I sold it on eBay at the turn of the century (this one). Lady Stardust is our boy Marc Bolan from Tyrannosaurus Rex. He and Bowie met after Space Oddity came out, and they painted a managerial office together. More importantly though, they recorded a single called The Prettiest Star together. It was later re-recorded for Aladdin Sane with The Spiders on it, but the 1970 single is my favorite version. After you do the Aladdin Sane reactions, I'll definitely remind you. The last episode of The Marc Bolan Show in 1977 was an episode with David Bowie on it. Soon after that episode was recorded, Marc died in a car crash. He'd hit a tree stump. David paid for his wife and son Dolan's personal care and college education. Marc's funeral as well, I believe. He looked out for them for decades as a sign of love and respect. T. Rex, David Bowie, Alice Cooper, Roxy Music. The fathers of glam rock.

    I find this song to be the most criminally underrated on the album. It's a song about reverence within the theme, I believe. Ziggy is playing small clubs and trying to write songs about personal topics to get himself out there. The fictional version of Marc Bolan is someone Ziggy admires, so he paid tribute. This strikes me as an Elton John-inspired track. Elton later saw David perform at the Rainbow Theatre in 1972 and the Hammersmith Odeon in 1973 and was very fond of David until a falling out lasting for around a decade. That "diva feud" was patched up in 1985 at Live-Aid. Unlike most tracks on the album, this one actually had a demo, meaning this was David's 2nd attempt to record the song. The original is a bonus track on the Rykodisc and anniversary editions. Very riveting.

    Marc Bolan is Lady Stardust. I think the song taken at face value is an observation/narration of watching Marc in performance ( the boy in the bright blue jeans etc) a fan jumping on the stage as they often do. Whilst Marc and T.Rex never cracked the USA they were massive in the U.K Bowie and Bolan were great rivals and great friends, they were a springboard for each other. Marcs death was a great loss to Bowie at the time.

  • @1nelsondj
    @1nelsondj2 жыл бұрын

    Great analysis although I wish you'd gone through all of the lyrics, up next he talked of the femme fatales emerging from the shadows, Bowie was an early fan of Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground and that song 'Femme Fatale' from their 1st album is classic. There's lots of tone in this one as you said, a twilight sort of mood. Bowie was saying the 'freaks' were okay, they were nice. The marginalized people had a champion in him. The song benefits from the simple arrangement too, no electric guitars or synths or even strings. For me (as well as others apparently) this is a standout track with genuine emotion to it, much better than 'Starman' for me. The rest of the 5 songs are short, 3 of them under 3 minutes. Short and to the point.

I am a Bowiephile from the 70s and I always found that repeated listenings made me appreciate his music even more than the first listen. Also, I prefer seeing his live performances more than just listening to the studio albums because he put so much of himself into his performance. In the movie Ziggy Stardust, for instance, after every costume change, he seemed to take on a new persona. That movie is excellent, btw, for the audience reactions as well as his outstanding, sometimes over the top, performance. Check out My Death, width of a circle, moonage daydream, and my favorite, rock and roll suicide. Bowie was a master of sound AND vision!

New York Dolls aaaand in L.A. - Zolar X (thank you Professor) and many others who I forget. The Punks are also in there somehow some way, the categories are absurd. Freddy Mercury. Brian Eno. Alice Cooper went total Glamm. Sex Pistols, in their own disgusting way, were glam and would never admit it. I was an extra in Alex Cox' Sid and Nancy. Kidding, Johnny Boy.

    It's great you liked it. You to listen to it twice. This is a different character I would think. I never saw David with black hair...Ever. David was Ziggy. Very controversial obviously a man named Lady Stardust. David and Marc Bolan didn't get the slack that Freddie Mercury did and I'm thinking it's because they never denied anything. They were right in your face with while Freddie denied it. When David married Iman he said "I was an In the closet heterosexual" very clever. If you get a chance Google his first wife Angie when they were married.. Talk about characters? She was a character. She was involved in the creation of Ziggy. It's a very interesting story. This is another great track off the album. The only song you played so far off the album is "It ain't easy" it doesn't fit... he didn't write it. It's not English sounding. I wish I was old enough to have seen this tour live.
