I was born in '64. I returned soda bottles I collected from the neighbors for the deposits, and scraped up coins to buy his albums in the late 70's and early eighties. For me, it was Ziggy, Heroes, and then came Scary Monsters. But every album he made was scattered with genius. I wore the grooves off of that vinyl. Forty-five years later, I'm still getting amped with Moonage Daydream, Joe the Lion, and my favorite underrated masterpiece, Teenage Wildlife. Oh god, and the whole second side of Heroes? I get a reflexive high just listening. It's just so encompassing.

I agree that Bowie had "many voices". It grew, developed and matured just as he did. How many were his real voice can be debated for a long time but I do remember once reading a quote of Bowie's where he said that his voice around the time of the "Station to Station" album was his most "real" voice. For me, the time when I though his voice was most natural was around 2000 and the Heathen and Reality albums. After that, as he aged so did his voice and it became much weaker but he was not deterred by that and adapted his style a little to cater for it's increasing frailty. By the time of "Blackstar" the power had gone but the passion survived.

Michi Hirota. Japanese actor from the Red Buddha Theater are the female Japanese voice on Part 1. As someone mentioned she was one of the women on the Sparks - Kimono My House album cover. Scream Like A Baby and Up The Hill Backwards are also phenomenal songs.

Robert Fripp is my all-time favorite guitarist, and I absolutely love his wild yet controlled playing on “Part 1” and on the title cut as well. Hell, I love his playing on “Fashion,” too.

This is great! Fun fact. The lady singing the Japanese lyrics is featured on the cover of Sparks' "Kimono My House" album. They've been going non-stop for over 50 years and I'd love to hear your thoughts on them, maybe the song "Life with the Macbeth's"?

It's no game was originally a folk tinged acoustic track called Tired of my life, which he wrote in 1968/69, during his brief Simon & Garfunkel influenced period. Bowie is the great recycler.

At the age of 20 this album was unlike anything out there. Fripp is unreal. Great song. Both versions.

Fripp seemed to be more about creating controlled texture on Heroes, but on this album, he totally went for broke, and both were beautiful in their own unique ways.

His voice was still in fine shape in 1980. He had kicked cocaine by this point. Chain smoking took an increasing toll later in the 80s through the mid 90s. He quit cigarettes and had regained most of his previous range by the turn of the century. His pop period followed this album, before he got back to more inventive material during the next decade. The spoken Japanese in No. 1 are the same lyrics as Bowie sings in English. Nice that you paired the intro and outro tracks!

The first Bowie album I purchased, and in my opinion, still his most innovative and at the same time accessible. Raw and polished at the same time. Diamond Dogs was close, but SM just completely nailed it!

Now you need to listen to "The Next Day" released i 2013 - more of Bowie's anger comes out. Still sounds raw. I love his rawer side.

I think the production was purposely raw and stark yet polished as a nod to punk. There was nothing that really sounded like this in 1980-the whole record has this type of "vibe" to it. He was also coming off of the Berlin experimental period. I think the bounce you are speaking of is reminiscent of Ashes To Ashes

Well, the album has a circular structure, starts and ends with the same song interpreted in a different way.

I love "It's no game" but I MUCH prefer the version with the Japanese girl kzread.info/dash/bejne/iXiXraqdn8zRntY.html. If you do look at it David Bowie is basically repeating in English what the girl says in Japanese (as far as I can tell). It's very cool :D
