David Bowie ~ Golden Years 1975 Disco Purrfection Version
Музыка
"Golden Years" was the first single off of "Station To Station" but sounded like it should have been included on "Young Americans" instead. The song came about when Bowie got inspired after listening to The Drifters version of "On Broadway" released in 1963. He started playing piano, riffing off the song to form the melody and he crafted a pop and R&B smash with the very groovy "Golden Years". He offered it to Elvis Presley who declined to record it. Hell, even Bing Crosby knew that David was an up and comer and embraced his talent on his Christmas TV special.
Bowie kept the song for himself and included it on "Station To Station" making it the first single from the new album. The rest of the album embraced the electronic sounds coming out of Germany at the time, (think Kraftwerk) and the plastic soul sound of "Golden Years" was in direct contrast to that. I think it was a wise move on his part. The addition of "Golden Years" made me purchase "Station To Station", and got me to listen to the rest of the album and develop an appreciation for his new experimental sound.
He did solidify his chart presence with "Golden Years" after the #1 hit "Fame" earlier that year. Behind the board for both songs was engineer/Producer Harry Maslin who engineered #1 pop singles for Barry Manilow (Mandy) and then the duet of Dionne Warwick with The Spinners on "Then Came You" by the time he produced Bowie's "Fame". He was then asked to perform "Golden Years" on "Soul Train" being one of the few white recording artists to appear on the show. The video clip of his performance helped the song to stay on the charts for 16 weeks, eventually peaking at #10 in early 1976.
I felt like I the rug had been pulled out from under me when I heard that Bowie died last January 10. "Panic In Detroit", "Space Oddity", "Diamond Dogs", "Changes"...all on the official soundtrack of my life. He was such an integral part of my musical education and now his voice was silenced forever. I remember listening to his music at my friend Colleen's home whose sister Cindy had all of his records. The man was never boring. The first purrfection version I ever did was "Fame" back in 2006. I finally got my paws on the music stems for "Golden Years" and got really excited about completing this disco version. This is a tribute to my fallen idol, David Bowie. Long live the starman.

This is my favorite Bowie period. Amazing work--though decades later he could hardly remember a thing from this period due to all the cocaine...

Bowie himself has said as much...no shame and no disrespect...many 70's bands were cocaine fuelled to keep up with the demands of creating and recording. The important thing is that he overcame the addiction and remained relevant and maintained his creativity.

And I very much respect those who are honest about their flaws, while many others would just lie and lie, again and again.
In 1975 I was 12 yrs old. I remember this song came on the radio and then he performed the song on television. Didn't know really who he was but that tune was so fresh than any radio song back then...it was like new alternative music for that time.. I'm 59 now (2022) and It is still fresher than ever.. stayed that way for all these decades. Golden years, Golden years...come get up my baby
Bowie Was " Had Always Been Able 2 Ingratiate Himself 2 A Variety Of Genre's " And In So Doing Attracted Admirer's From " Different Musical Fields In The Process " !!! " Thankyou " Once Again DJ Cat For Providing This Reworking Of What Has " Always Been " A Musical Gem In The Crown " Of " The Thin White Duke's " Cultural Achievements " !!!! From Adrian Browne 1965
Way ahead of time.
being 67 years young, i am enjoying my golden years.
It is so sad Bowie is not here to marvel at your incredible skills and staying faithful to one of his masterpieces!
This jams!
PRODUCER: You should do a disco song. DAVID: Baby, I am a disco song.
Thankyou so much. Bowie was one of a kind
To think Elvis was considered for this song - he probably wouldn't have done a bad job but..... this was made for Bowie and released at the end of 1975. From Glam rock to Soul funk, he lost himself as the Thin White Duke and became his most creative in the process. A not to be repeated dance classic.

Can still remember the way the late afternoon autumn sun shone on the beautiful natural blonde hair of my crush as this song was playing as he walked out the door when I was on duty that day. He liked me also. Now I "run for the shadows in these Golden Years."

I miss you David Bowie! I love this song ! It will always be new to me! 😢 I love you ❤❤❤!
Every time I hear this mix it puts a smile on my face. Thank You
"Station to Station" is, IMO, one of the Greatest Albums Ever. Years before any rock/disco fusion was even a "thing", he basically perfected the combination. The title song of that album is epic. His version of "Wild Is the Wind" creates - for me at least - the rare 3-Way Tie for definitive version, along with Nina Simone's and Johnny Mathis' renditions. (All to me are equally moving and beautiful in very different ways; DO NOT ask me for my "favorite".) And "Word On A Wing" is simply one of the most beautiful songs I've yet heard in the English language...
Love this, was 18 in '75
Well....When you can appear on Soul Train with this song...You know this is absolutely perfect...This remix is the best ever...There's not a close second!!!!!

@@albertoracaj2718 Earl Slick's work as the Lead on the (IMO) under rated tune "A New Killer Star" is absolutely Superb! Very different but certainly on par with David's earlier Lead, Mick Ronson.
Outstanding as always. This is hard to beat my friend if I'm allowed to say that. I could dance out in the streets playing this song. Well done,😎👍🎶😁
I'm dancing in my mind now.
