David Bowie, Damon Albarn - Fashion/interview (Trafic Musique 2003.09)

Музыка

TVShow ''Trafic Musique'' 2003.09.04(18)
Notes: the interviews on this show are in French
David insisted on the fact that he considers "Think Tank" as one of the best albums of the year.
Francoise Hardy, a very famous singer during the sixties/seventies and now a living icon, was delighted to finally meet David. She'd been saying for the last fifteen years how much she loved him as a songwriter, singer and performer and was now able to meet the man in the flesh! David also seemed very happy and even more when she said "Outside: was her favorite album. She had also worked with Damon and Blur in the past.

I love all three of these artists. David Bowie was absolutely right about everyone being in love with Françoise Hardy. When Françoise Hardy is talking about what a huge fan she (and musicians like Gainsbourg) were of David Bowie, he is blushing so hard and it is the cutest thing ever. Bowie is absolutely giddy about Françoise's praise. I love this interview and I'm so happy to have found it.

I'll admit that as a Damon Albarn fan, this isn't the best performance he's had... He's obviously intimidated, I can hear it in his voice. He's usually so much better. Go Damon!

Translation (part 1) (relying on the voiceover and on the bits of English that I can hear beneath it. There're some bits I'm unsure of, feel free to comment if you want to help me out) Presenter: Here is David, and Damon Albarn from Blur, who I welcome, as he has just arrived among us. Later, Françoise Hardy... So, Blur's album, Think Tank is definitely an excellent album. David Bowie: Great. Fantastic. Presenter: Notably, Damon worked with Moroccan musicians. Well, there are many things on this album, we'll talk about it with him later. The song you're going to play now is called Fashion, David, you're going to perform a duet. David Bowie! Damon Albarn! The song is called Fashion. (They play Fashion) Presenter: David and Damon! Come join me! Come here, Damon, come here. Hi, pleased to meet you. You can sit here. First, do you know each other well, the two of you? David Bowie: No, we've run across each other a couple of times. But I'd like to believe that we have a kind of mutual understanding of each other's work, some areas where we cross over. Damon Albarn: We come from the same part of England as well, I mean, sort of. And he obviously, well this goes for everything that we might say tonight, he does it better than me, but we have a certain sort of soulfulness in the voice, the same English soul. David Bowie: Yes, we both love Angelie Newly (?) (laughter) No, no, no, I (unintelligible) on anyone! Damon Albarn: (unintelligible) and Jacques Brel. David Bowie: But it's the kind of thing that we English people have in our soul, but it's just hard to actually put your finger on it. Damon Albarn: Yeah, again, something which I hope I've been able to pick up from this gentleman's work is that sense of adventure when you try something new, each time. Oh, the thing's coming out, I think I've got too much wax in my ear... Sticking it back in... David Bowie: Yeah, she's breathing very closely, right in your ear, you can hear it! Her voice is invading my ear. (Laughter) Presenter: Oh, don't make fun of her like that! Damon- David Bowie: We'd better shock our monkeys (?) Presenter: There are many ballads on this album, and maybe I'm wrong, but it gave me the impression that you've taken your time, you wanted to take your time... Damon Albarn (I feel like the voiceover and Damon aren't saying the same thing so I'm trying to reconcile the two): No, I think for me when I started doing the Gorillaz project, it really freed me from how I usually worked with my band, but it's much more relaxing, simple, playing with my band, it's different. I feel very kind of at ease when I'm making this music. And it's quite nice being able to seperate between this sort of pop sensibility and an emotional need, you know, and that's why I've done that, in my life. Presenter: Does that mean that there was a moment when you thought, maybe: Blur, it's over. During the Gorillaz project, or when there were problems with the guitarist, your childhood friend, Graham, and everything? Wasn't there a moment before you began recording Think Tank when you thought to yourself: Blur is over for me, I've had enough of Britpop, and journalists, they are tiring. Damon Albarn: Yeah, yeah, I've definitely had enough of Britpop. I mean, I think the whole country has had enough of Britpop. You know, I don't think it has necessarily developed into a very positive period for our country. But as far as the band is concerned, no, that's not the same thing, I grew up with these people, I went to school with them, you can't separate yourself from something that is essentially your family. Presenter: David, did you find in the diversity of inspirations, lots of things that have been similar to parts of your career? David Bowie: No, I think this comparison makes no sense, but I'd like to say though that it's never been out of my CD player since the day it came out. And I found it to be one of the most mature albums to come out from a British band in many, many years. I absolutely adore that record, I think it's been unequalled, frankly, this year. Nothing comes close to it, it's above everything, at least in Britain, for sure, and that includes the last Radiohead record, I think this is better than that. Reporter: Maybe I'm wrong, because there are comparisons that can't be done, but there's a spirituality, a sort of tranquillity in this album, and I feel like it can also be found in the lyrics of Reality, because in many songs on Reality, you're pondering about spirituality. Damon Albarn: Maybe that's got to do with the fact that for some bizarre reason we both have children that are the same age. David Bowie: I think it's exactly that, that's what I was about to say. I think, the sudden responsibilities of looking at the world with another pair of glasses sharpens your focus a bit, and makes you think a little more carefully about what you write down. One of the major reasons for me, I don't know if it was for you, was that I wanted my daughter to think that her dad was actually a bit positive about the world, I don't ever want her to say: 'Why the fuck did you bring me into this world if you think it's so shit?', you know. You tend to think twice when you've got kids. 'Don't think twice, it's alright'. Presenter: What is your little girl's name? David Bowie: Lexi. Well, Alexandria Zora. Presenter: Think Tank, Blur's new album. Thank you, Damon, for staying with us. Damon Albarn: My pleasure. Presenter: And we're going to have a guest you both know, Françoise Hardy, in a moment. David Bowie: Some better than others, apparently... (laughter) Presenter: We're going to begin with someone who has had an important role in music, Malcolm McLaren. David Bowie: I shouldn't have said that. Oh, f-..

Translation (part 2) (Malcolm McLaren talks about Françoise Hardy. David Bowie confesses his love for her) Presenter: Haha, here we are! There are going to be some ruffled feathers! Françoise Hardy! Here she comes! David Bowie: Oh dear...Fantastic! Presenter: I'm giving you a kiss. Then, Damon. David Bowie: It's a pleasure. So good to meet you. Presenter: Are you doing okay, Françoise? Françoise Hardy: Do I sit here? Presenter: Yes, please do. So, Damon, you've worked with Françoise, haven't you? Damon Albarn: Absolutely. Presenter: Could you remind us about it? And Françoise too, about the time you worked with Blur. Françoise Hardy: Well, working isn't the right word, I think. Presenter: I mean, you've recorded a song with them, right? Françoise Hardy: Yes, we sang a duet. Damon Albarn: Yeah, it wasn't work, was it? Françoise Hardy: No, not really, it was fun. Presenter: When did it happen? Three, four years ago? Françoise Hardy: Um...1995. Damon Albarn: 1994. Françoise Hardy: No, no, in 1995. David Bowie: 1993, actually. (Laughter) Presenter: And why, who decided to make it happen, how did it happen? Damon Albarn: Well, we did a song on Parklife, the album, which had that sort of resonance with Scott Walker and that French lyrical pop music from the sixties and it was always trying to be something that sounded like what Françoise had made. I don't remember exactly how we hooked up, but when we did, it clicked instantly, it was a magic moment. Françoise Hardy: I'd like to say that I'm a big fan of David, ever since the song Heroes came out, I think, in the late seventies. And I'd also like to say that I've met great French artists who were also fans of David, namely Serge Gainsbourg, who admired him a lot and who incidentally used some of his musicians, I believe, and someone who David probably doesn't know about, Mireille, who wrote so many pretty songs, and who I've brought with me to the cinema to see David: we went to see Furio together and most of all we saw The Hunger, which really moved us. To this day, I still think it's a masterpiece, I don't know what David thinks about it. But I just wanted to say this, because Mireille was probably about seventy-five, nearly eighty years old at the time, and she was a big, big fan of David, so I used to bring her to the cinema to see him! David Bowie: Well, that's so lovely, thank you very much! I'm delighted. Françoise Hardy: But, as for me, I still follow what David is doing, and I'd like to ask him something that maybe isn't a very good question, but it's a question that arises when you have great esteem for an artist: I'd like to know if among all the records he has made, there is one that he likes more than the others. There's one that I personally have a soft spot for, and it's Outside. David Bowie: Really? I'm stunned, that's wonderful. I really like that album myself. I have a special penchant for an album called The Buddha of Suburbia. I put a lot of work into it, with Erdal Kızılçay. It was just the two of us, working on that album, and it was such a lot of work. And I really felt like it was the beginning of me feeling able, confident, after a difficult period I went through as a writer, and it all sort of came back with that album, and maybe it's not to everyone's liking, but it has its importance, for me. Françoise Hardy: I think that maybe people don't know about the fact David has produced or co-produced many of his own albums. So I really admire him as a producer, he makes his albums entirely, and I find the way he produces them absolutely perfect. Presenter: We're going to see David onstage in a moment with another band called Air... Françoise, I know that you're interested in astrology, so do you see any special future for David? Françoise Hardy: We're not sure about his exact time of birth, I've seen different times being spread around. But I would love to know his real time of birth, if he knows it. Presenter: Do you remember it? David Bowie: 7, 4 and 12 o'clock! I came in three parts! (laughter) Presenter: Anyhow, I'd like to thank you three, and now you're going to see Air onstage, who came specifically for this tribute to David Bowie. Damon, thanks a lot for coming, your album is magnificent, I have to say it, very sincerely. I think you can give him a round of applause.

Considering the blatantly rude and childish answer you managed to articulate i shouldn't even bother replying but i'm gonna do it anyway. For starters dubbing and subtitles are two different things. What 'Triever Studios' was asking was for the interview to have subtitles and not being dubbed in french. It was JUST her opinion and not a direct attack on french culture or anything. Though I understand that when the show is broadcasting live, dubbing is inevitable,it gets mildly annoying overtime.

romany harman Damon Albarn is the singer of 2 popular English bands, Blur and Gorillaz. He also has a solo career. Personally I have 3 favourite singers, Bowie and Damon are 2 of them. I believe that Damon is intimidated in this performance I mean, who wouldn't be? It's David Bowie! He's truly a nice guy just sometimes a bit blunt in interviews and performances but he is a goofball.

David is having a good time on stage, but the pairing of his voice with Damons is... Not particularly great, and Damon is coming up pretty short. I like DA inside Blur and the Gorillaz, but standing beside Bowie and singing with him, suddenly he sounds like some guy from high school who got the misplaced notion that he could sing.

Albarn embarrassed himself in that performance. Vocally (and in every other sense) he's not in the same league as Bowie.

This sounds projectional. Damon sounded just fine and very clearly respects Bowie not to sing over him

Grape Nuyo [Hastagazpatcho] actually no. I'm German. German isn't internationally agreed to be the bridge language for people so I went and learned the language which is just that. And would you believe it, it isn't French either
