Lyrics
Do you remember a guy that's been
In such an early song?
I've heard a rumor from Ground Control
Oh no, don't say it's true
They got a message from the Action Man
"I'm happy, hope you're happy too
I've loved all I've needed, love
Sordid details following"
The shrieking of nothing is killing, just
Pictures of Jap girls in synthesis and I
Ain't got no money and I ain't got no hair
But I'm hoping to kick but the planet it's glowing
Ashes to ashes, funk to funky
We know Major Tom's a junkie
Strung out in heaven's high
Hitting an all-time low
Time and again I tell myself
I'll stay clean tonight
But the little green wheels are following me
Oh no, not again
I'm stuck with a valuable friend
"I'm happy, hope you're happy too"
One flash of light but no smoking pistol
I never done good things (I never done good things)
I never done bad things (I never done bad things)
I never did anything out of the blue, woh-o-oh
Want an axe to break the ice
Wanna come down right now
Ashes to ashes, funk to funky
We know Major Tom's a junkie
Strung out in heaven's high
Hitting an all-time low
My mother said, to get things done
You'd better not mess with Major Tom
My mother said, to get things done
You'd better not mess with Major Tom
My mother said, to get things done
You'd better not mess with Major Tom
My mother said, to get things done
You'd better not mess with Major Tom
About David Bowie:
David Bowie redefined musical genres and the potential of live performance for generations of music lovers. Creating and discarding a variety of personae and restlessly challenging musical boundaries, Bowie released timeless albums including Space Oddity, Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust…, Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Young Americans, Station to Station, "Heroes,” Let's Dance, Heathen, The Next Day and many more. Blackstar, Bowie’s 28th and final studio album, was released on his 69th birthday, January 8, 2016. David Bowie died on January 10, 2016, two days after the release of Blackstar. His body of work, his influence on the worlds of music, art, fashion, film, theatre and beyond, and his legacy of innovation and reinvention will live forever. 2022 kicks off with Bowie at 75, a celebration of his 75th birthday with the Brilliant Adventure box set, the previously unreleased Toy, the 50th anniversary of Ziggy Stardust and a series of special events.

“The filming was interrupted at one point by an old man walking his dog, looking for driftwood. Mallet asked him if he wouldn’t mind moving, and pointed out Bowie sitting outside the catering van. ‘Do you know who this is?’ he asked. Sharp as a tack, the old man responded with, ‘Of course I do. It’s some cunt in a clown suit.’ Sometime later, Bowie remembered, ‘That was a huge moment for me. It put me back in my place and made me realise, “Yes, I’m just a cunt in a clown suit.” ― Dylan Jones, David Bowie: A Life

“My mother said to get things done. You’d better not mess with Major Tom.” God, that line has stuck with me since I first discovered this song. It’s such a haunting chorus perfectly combined with the synths. Moreover, this music video is a work of art. Having the Blitz Kid clowns in this music video really added to the atmosphere: that quintessential Blitz club look with white foundation, eyeshadow and eyeliner, and the colored highlights. What a haunting, ghostly performance. Bowie was brilliant.

Currently struggling with a cocaine addiction. I know it's weird but it's extremely comforting to listen to his songs about cocaine. I have very little support so Bowie's music helps me get through the struggle Edit: I'm 38 days sober as of 2/8/23 and I'm feeling great Edit 2: thank you all for your support. I'm 50 days sober now as of 2/20/23 and still doing good. I won't lie, I still have cravings, but I know better than to throw away everything that sobreity has given me Edit 3: It's been a while since I updated because I was pretty ashamed that I relapsed. My plug had contacted me from a different number and I relapsed on 3/1/23 on my 2 month mark. It wasn't a big relapse though and as of 3/24/23 I'm 3 weeks sober. I really didn't expect to get so much support over all these months from y'all but it has been very helpful and I'm so thankful of y'all

When I listen to this song, I think of Major Tom (ground control) and things being chaotic and out of control, and yet without some chaos, there won't be any kind of expansion of our universe. So much violence these days. Its the fazes of life, birth, life and death.....ashes to ashes a toast to what used to be. I think of Bowie as some sort of messenger from another planet sent here to wake us up with his songs being used as messages. He is ethereal.

I'll do you one better: The 10-minute Blackstar video portrayed an occult ritual that was watched millions of times by millions of people around the world in the days leading up to Bowie's death. Through this distributed expenditure of psychic energy and the repetition of the ritual, Bowie's soul made the leap from being human to being a God in a process called "apotheosis." David Bowie is now a celestial demigod who may be worshipped, prayed to, etc. He was an avid occultist in life, and he planned for this.

True of some big names, they were unique (of course some depends on your musical tastes) But Bowie, Lemmy, Mercury, Hendrix, Moon could never be replaced. Lemmy had a unique style of bass playing and Keith Moon behind the drums was a wild thing. There's a German lass who plays drum covers , Sina, who said Moon basically played a series of drum solos to make the drums an integral part of the track as opposed to a time keeper.

I love how "Ashes To Ashes" isn't only thematically a send-off to "Space Oddity", it fully commits to that mood musically as well. Whereas Space Oddity sounds grandiose and epic, Ashes To Ashes sounds distorted, low-key and off-kilter. With Bowie's high-pitched wails and the mournful synths, one can downright picture Major Tom crashing down to Earth and hitting the pavement hard. Figuratively speaking, of course. Whatever it was that kept him flying high now out of reach/axed for good - replaced by painkillers and/or the slowly unravelling realization that life "down there" is harsh. His excesses never changed that fact - they only distorted his perception and made him worse for wear. It's a dire song - in the most creative and artistic way. Space Oddity, despite being somewhat of a dirge, has a romantic tinge to it. Ashes To Ashes deconstructed that romanticism, but in the process turned out to be an artistically pleasing successor that resonated with old and new listeners alike. One of the best sequels in popculture history.

This song and it’s eerie, mournful atmosphere, ashes to ashes (religious people say that all the time during funerals and I get strong funeral, death vibes. It was also a children song during Black Plague. So i think the title itself tells you what this song’s gonna be about) is him finally facing his past, his addiction and anxiety over the upcoming decade. writing a song about addiction, producing it as a demented lullaby, and revisiting the beloved character that brought your fame to heaven highs as an allegory to falling low to the trappings of said addiction. this man had such an ability for world building in his music, and making it feel so real, sonically and visually. something he didn't lose up to his death. a true artist.

One thing this video proves for sure, the discussion and accolades for what David Bowie has achieved with hats is long overdue.

My mom used to park me in front of the T.V. of mornings while she got ready for work, put on MTV and turn the volume up for the music. I was probably of pre-school age, and this video was on heavy circulation at the time. It used to scare the hell out of me and I'd have nightmares for years. I was most frightened when the new romantics would appear going "IM HAPPY, HOPE YOU'RE HAPPY TOO.". I still remember having bad dreams being connected to all these tubes after having this group of evil scary people led by a french clown capture me. All of that would change years later after finding this L.P. at a garage sale. Thanks for being a part of my past, present, and future, David Bowie. Rest in Space

I hate to sound like an old guy but....where are the creative geniuses in music today? Who has the sheer volume and incredible variety of this person's music amongst today's artists? I lament his passing.

weirder, more experimental artists don't get into the limelight as often these days. doesn't mean they aren't still out there. a couple i recommend are weyes blood, yves tumor, and the garden. they're all pretty popular within their groups but still lesser known. another thing i want to mention is that you don't have to turn to newly released music to experience something new. there is a ton of old music out there that is relatively obscure and unknown.

Well, David is certainly in heaven , playing his piano ,that he insisted was magically haunted, he's certainly found life on Mars , . And yes your right, ive lost a lot of fellow musicians over the last ten years. Lost isnt a good word, they are in a differnt music relm, like they are here, yet not , at the same time.. keep them alive in your life with their music within your soul . and your heart.
