Dave Mustaine joins Sweetwater‘s Nick Bowcott to talk about Megadeth‘s new record and Dave's relationship with Gibson Guitars. Dave covers a long and varied history of Mustaine signature models that’s now culminated in Dave‘s appointment as a Gibson Brand Ambassador and his signature Gibson Flying V. This Flying V features a neck modified for speed and metal, and the guitar leaps seamlessly from lead to rhythm playing without missing a beat, just like Dave! Nick and Dave also cover songwriting, bandmates, and Dave‘s brutal new Gibson signature acoustic guitar, a rare 24-fret behemoth acoustic. Check it out!

I start of by saying I got here on click bate. I was about to explode in the comments. Then after about 3 mins in I thought, "that Dave is genius"! However, I would have thought his love for Gibson guitars came from Angus Young? I'll be in the guitar buying market again in a couple months or so, I'll certainly check this out! I'm looking for a 335 more than a V. I've never seen it do metal, but who's to say it can't!

@@amordeus2681 From wha I have heard MIJ back in the day where so GOOD that they were compared with the USA models easily. I can only comment on my own guitar which is the typical era MIJ Jackson (poplar wings, quarteshawn maple, ebony board construction) and its one hell of a guitar. This current line up is like a band again and Dave confirms it. You can tell he let Kiko and Dirk into his circle and they are able to contribute to Megadeth in a way that was missing for years. My favorite line up since the 90's, by far. And the new album shows it.

@@goofykid2027 Outside of Ellefson, Dave hasn't kicked a member out since 98 when Menza was fired. Every member outside of that left on their own. He also had Poland back for one album, had Ellefson come back after Jr. tried to sue him, had Lomenzo come back, tried to work out Marty and Nick to come back, etc. Sure, Megadeth has had member changes, but most left on their own. I dunno, the fact that he'll let Gibson control his speech like that (making him call Dean "The Company") came across as weak and sell-outy to me. I lost a bit of respect for him here. @@AmericanNationalist852 the only respect I have left for Dave is for the songs he wrote years ago. They are still incredible.
this is one of the best interviews Dave has done, he was being sincere and talking about personal battles with the cancer and then reaching out to guys like Tom Keifer to help hi,m, acknowledging they would have been mortal enemies back in the day. he claims MEgadeth is as big as they have ever been....I hope so.
Dave said he didn't want the acoustic to cost too high where it would be out of reach for most people, and the MSRP is $4,500!
Great interview! Dave seems so content and happy right now. Even when he wasn't in a good place, he always gave a good interview. Uses a lot of analogies and imagery in his interviews, which is interesting and engaging. Such an articulate, intelligent and colourful character. So cool to see and hear he's still around and relevant after all this time.

He wasn't endorsed by BC Rich early on. That was just the guitar that offered him 24 frets at the time. And Gar had an in with that company. But, he had Jackson for many years, the Dean for a lot of years, and now Gibson. But, what's the contradiction? He is going to say what he plays is great because at the time it is. He's also said that about many band members, before. Why? Because, he's constantly had great players, so he praises them at the time they are in the band. You grow up, your taste changes, and you appreciate things for different reasons. You can tell he's more into the family vibe at Gibson, and that helps shape the way he talks about it. And, since these companies essentially make the guitars to his specs, of course they will be great for him. And why would he say they are the best he's had? He's refining the specs with each guitar.

I tried Dave's Gibson V when I went to pick up the Les Paul that I bought online and I didn't like it that much, maybe because it doesn't feel like a regular Gibson because of the scale length and 24 frets, but it sounds absolutely amazing and it has a super comfy neck.
Singing is a hard craft. Generally I've never been into singers. I like people who can use their voice like an instrument. Dave may not have a conventional voice but he uses it to the greatest effect. Having a 'proper singer' wouldn't work. It wouldn't be Megadeth.

Wow! That Song Writer acoustic looks fantastic! That may be my very first Gibson acoustic! I’m a dyed in the wool Martin guy (and Guilds, too) for acoustics. I’m NOT a metal guy when it comes to performing, and it would be soooo weird to be inspired by Mustaine, to purchase my first Gibby! Even electrics, I play Fender and Gretsch guitars! If Gibson has fixed up their quality issues, I can get on board. For years, they charged top $ for guitars that you’d receive with finish, and even structural/engineering issues. I want a Mustaine acoustic! LOL, LOL! Peace
