No triggers. Two bass drums with single pedals. He truly hits the drums HARD, nails every note in every song through a two hour gig. You can’t get more old school and raw than this. Many modern drummers might have technically surpassed him, but to me Dave is just still in a class of his own.

I totally agree! I made a post on r/drums a little bit ago about it. Most of the newer drummers (I say this as a 26 yo lol) if you put them on an entirely acoustic kit even with the ideal sticks/heads/beaters would struggle to have hits this articulate and booming! Not to mention his age, trying to play drums for a living fucked my back up at 22. And I was only playing this kind of music in my free time, he truly is a God

TBH, I can't say I've run into too many(if any at all) people that try to claim that Lars had any kind of notable technical prowess. At least not out of musicians in the fanbase. In all honesty, most of the fans within the "Big 4's" fanbases are pretty well-grounded. Usually, most of the fanboy whining involves the ones who beat the dead horse known as any discussion involving Hetfield, Mustaine, and Ulrich and act like their opinions hadn't already been running on fumes since before the internet was really a thing. The subjects of the argument are millionaires who have accomplished much in their lives. While all these countless screechers do is yell random crap that will be lost in the void and accomplish nothing like those that came before them. EDIT: I'm pretty sure that, whatever comment I was replying to here, is gone. Probably deleted.

He makes it look EFFORTLESS. The man is a born drummer...look at how he's goofing around at the beginning, and just dives in headfirst with dead-on precision. I know they play this song every night so it's like second nature, but the way he MOVES while he drums is jaw-dropping to watch. There's no wasted or extraneous motion, no jerky or awkward motions, everything is fluid. Dave is simply a monster on the kit. And that little "ding" on the ride bell KILLS me every time. I miss those special little moments with Paul in the band.

+keefriff99 ....and for me exactly what you mention makes the difference. You`ll easily find tons of drummers able to play those songs. And Paul is one of those. . and yeah the "ding" and those super fast one handed rolls. But we also must accept, that the metal circus simply goes via $$$-wood and ppl like Lombardo not fitting anymore. Bands 2day prefer stresslessness and arselicking over musical madness. So will not attend things like "BIG4" or "Metal Cruise"....and not buying the "latest" Slayer album as long as they simply put out some clones...since the 90`s . what comes next? Armani exclusive audience outfits, no outfit no Ticket? LÖL you think or know if DL has Gene Krupa as inspiration?

I like how musical he makes his parts, even more so than the original or how he played them before. You can "sing" his drumming. This last fallout with the band really sucked.

Years ago I watched an interview with one of Miles Davis's sons (not sure which one - can't find the footage). He talked about sitting with Miles watching MTV. They were watching some more mainstream music, then a live Slayer show came on. His son thought "Oh no this isn't going to go well". Miles watched a couple of minutes of the show, then quietly stood up to leave the room. As he started to leave, he stopped, looked at the TV, and said something like "That drummer's really got it go'in on". Definitely some seriously high praise. Especially to me because I love both these artists. I hope Dave feels the same.

I think War Ensemble is one of the top examples of perfect extreme metal drumming. Has a bit of everything.

I used to mosh so hard to this song in my basement as a kid. Twenty years later his son was a fan of my band and they came back stage to meet us. He was super humble. Very cool experience.

Dave Lombardo is a big part of why I loved and continue to love playing drums. Slayer only exists with you behind the kit as far as I'm concerned. You acknowledged me once between songs at a show in Ft Lauderdale years ago, responding to my yells of "LOMBARDO!!!" 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

So many unbelievable fills. I’m wondering what the likes off Krupa , Rich, Blakey and Roach would have made of Dave’s drumming. So technically brilliant but with swing and groove. Immense!

I've watched this video so many times. Awesome performance by Dave.

Here’s a bit of inspiration for ALL of us. If we put in the energy this dude does into anything we want to achieve in life it would be as good as done... Think about that for a second. Want to learn the drums, watch this guy, want to become a professional snowboarder, watch this guy... want to become a beast in your industry, watch this guy, want to accomplish damn near anything in life, watch this guy. There is much more going on here then just drumming people... want shit to happen in your life, watch this guy before you walk out the door each morning.. and it’ll happen. Period.

I can't believe he only made 65k in 2011 (the year of this tour, according to Lombardo himself). Someone should go to jail for treating him like that.

Even being Dave Lombardo, in a world class outfit like Slayer, was giving no real compensation for what will be seen as a historical contribution to the art of metal music. Even this man is a blue collar worker after all that success.

I was lucky enough to be standing no more than 6 feet away from him as he was playing with another band of his. To me, Dave is the exact definition of a great drummer. He picks up the band - and the crowd, like nobody's business. What a guy !

After watching Dave's perfection, I gave up my drums and picked up something appropriate to my skill level. A kazoo.

The snare is basically on 2 and 4.

As a guitarist and bassist, im just so impressed with the precision and stamina Dave has in all of his performances, Slayer or not. Such a gifted drummer.

One of the few metal drummers that actually groove!

Dirk Verbeuren’s got a great groove too. But Lombardo is the master. I’m convinced the influence of Cuban percussion in his childhood plays a big role in his approach to drumming in general.

Lars Ulrich just sucks... Dave is always been better then him now dave still play better then god while lars... well, he practiced, but now he's decent, not a beast as he's been in late '80

I wouldn't bet on that, musicians are one of the most disciplined people when it comes to their craft!

When I found out Dave was lied to and not paid double what any of the other guys and had left the band, so did I. He is the heart of that band and without him they would be nothing.

I was still in high school when I saw this legendary set. You guys kicked so much ass and always will in my eyes. Beers up lads 🍻🍺

Amazing drummer and amazing performance. No matter how many times I listen to this, it's awesome. And that ding always cracks me up for some reason.

This is one of the most inspiring drum videos for me, I always come back to this when I need some uplifting

Unfucking believable how smooth and relaxed he is playing at that tempo! He is a legend and Slayer NEEDS him back. I like Bostaph too, but Dave is on another level.

I don't like Slayer, but I love Dave Lombardo's skill on drums. This guy is phenomenal.

Lombardo is the best thrash metal drummer ever. He's the 🐐

I saw Slayer at the Cow Palace, San Francisco, in the late-1980’s. A break-dance crew was out on the floor, near the pit, demonstrating with their dancing how well they knew that Lombardo is a God of Thunder. It was amazing!

dave, you fucking rule! Thanks for inspiring drummers all over the world.

For me Dave Lombardo is one of the best drummer because he's not using fucking triggers on his kit like 99,9% of metal drummers

Except triggers don't do anything but give you a crisp clear bass drum hit. It's amazing for live shows and recording when you reach crazy speeds.

Lombardo has some of the most powerful double kicks at these speeds. A lot of these new metal bands rely on drum triggers which give off such an artificial sound, so I appreciate seeing guys like Dave who can crush it.

He is a beast! What kind of physis must Dave have to play all those Songs within this perfection, power and energy... My biggest respect!! And he created so many wonderful bits, not just playing along with the song...

He and Mike Patton alone made The Directors Cut such a brillant record.

Cool moments: 1:20 Hi, Gary! 1:44 that subtle cymbal touch 2:58 everything from there and on (obviously the whole video is amazing, Dave is the best)

It's impossible to imagine classic Slayer without Lombardo, just like it's impossible to imagine classic Morbid Angel without Pete. We'll never know what really happened behind the scenes, but it's true that without Jeff and Dave, Slayer is now more a brand than a band. I'm not saying it's not their right as owners of the band to keep playing, but nothing lasts forever.

I heard Dave Lombardo started the band and even got them signed on their first major label. Then they gave him the boot, after Hanneman passed. (For the second time)
