Dave is one of those drummers who, when you hear him playing, you *_KNOW_* it's him playing -- very recognizable. That can't be said for many, _many_ drummers. Dave (like Jeff) *_IS_* SLAYER!

Respect to all the styles of each drummer. But in my opinion Dave gave the band that incredible solid style. And Latin rudiments within the band that were phenomenal. Dave, an original Cuban drummer from the Slayer band who left a very important mark.

After south of heaven they became really boring. I think Dave started to dislike Kerry and Tom even more when he rejoined the band as they had become a fully developed business by then and Dave wasn't a part of that process. Out of the loop you could say!

What are you on about Tom was playing whole notes on the down beat about as straight and basic as it gets, he walks back to Dave to watch his hands because he's playing a really lazy "behind the beat" groove and Tom was trying to stay in time. Dave was spacing here and fucked up, it happens. Dave on record is amazing, his work on those early albums was top notch, for me I preferred Bostaph, he kept the time a lot more steady.

Dave Lombardo for me was the reason to listen to (some) Slayer (as well as Grip Inc. and other bands he was or is in). He just has a certain signature style, feel, groove and sound. I met him once when my band had the privilege to be the opening act for Slayer and Megadeth in Eindhoven years ago. Dave was really nice, and like many other drummers: funny and almost a little hyper-active. We met Tom as well, also a very nice guy. Kerry was kind of on his own and tcb. Pat O'Brian (Cannibal Corpse) was a supreme fill in for Hanneman. The guys from Megadeth were nice too. First, before showtime, Dave was just hilarious how he tried to maintain a "famous rockstar" attitude, but after the show he was just very nice and approachable.

Slayer were great as an unit, the combination of the original 4 guys. They were like a commando, or something. Lombardo was the one improving his skills, his work on South of Heaven (North of Hell) it’s terrific. On that album he sound like a modern John Bonham on steroids, Allright?

Uhh..no. Dave Lombardo was a huge part of Slayers success and the other guys screwed him out of his fair share of money. As a drummer I may be biased, but many agree he was the most talented musician in the group..self taught, no reading sheet music.

For me there's no Slayer without Lombardo.

And Dave is the reason Metallica sounds the way it did on the first 3 albums.. He thought James Herfield to play guitar and taught him his techniques. Some of their biggest classics are Daves songs.. Megadeth embodies Thrash and the frame of mind better than any band.. And helps having Thrashes founder as the founder of the band. Slayer on the other hand have been trying to repeat themselves since 1990.. And have never come close to producing a great album. Decent albums but that’s it.. Same can be said of Anthrax which are certainly improving compared to their 90s early 00s stuff. Metallica nobody in Metal consider them trend setters anymore.. It’s been a long time since they’ve produced something worthy of the name.. Hardwired is their best album in 25 years but that’s really not saying much as it’s quite average.. Megadeth have produced one of their best albums in years very reminiscent of the 90-95 period so good it finally won them awards.. Not that they need them.

for the people wondering wtf they were laughing at.... as a guitarist and drummer. They were playing out of time purposely by the smallest bit just to piss each other off. On top of Dave making half what Tom was and holding in the anger.

Araya was always supposed to be the band's frontman, but I have in my mind that the only reason he picked up the bass is because the band couldn't have time to find anyone to play bass for them so they just went with tom

I didn’t understand this til I researched about Dave’s time with the band.

Lombardo is one of the most influential and great metal drummers of al time, Tom will be remembered as a the vocalist of a slayer, and thats it for him.

Dave was only making $60,000 a year in his last year with SLAYER ? Don't blame him for leaving , SLAYER let everyone take all the money from them ? 🤔

Dave was getting screwed for decades. They first hated him for getting married, and saying he wanted two weeks off for a honeymoon, they told him no...Then bringing his wife on tour, and being happy lol Then, Rick Rubin had to bribe him to come back (Supposedly $40,000), then he got fucked again and left. Slayers management have a terrible reputation anyways, but not putting him down for ANY songwriting publishing was a major stab in the back. Dave did two legendary interviews for Metal Forces back then and he explained everything, including how much the band hated each other in detail, how none of the members have seen or have even been to each others houses and never talk. Particularly Jeff and Kerry.

In the 90s, Dave wanted to see the birth of his first child and he gave the notice in advance (apparently 9 months in advance) that he will take few weeks off so that he can spend some time with his new born child but Slayer just let him go and hired Paul Bostaph.

@@arvindshastry1178 I'm not saying he's an awful drummer. I haven't paid that much attention to him. He was awful at that show though. He completely lost the beat at one point. The whole band trainwrecked because of it. When they all agreed on a general tempo they all disagreed on the down beat and took turns deciding which one of them was right. This went on for like 12 bars. That was just the worst of it. He was sloppy, clearly went into the wrong part of the songs multiple times and had to adjust. It was full on incompetence.

amazing control, managed to give Tom the finger then quickly hit a cymbal with the same hand, impressive.

clayton schiller No doubt I believe that if Jeff lived, Dave would’ve remained in the band. Remember, it was Jeff who insisted on Dave returning to the band in 2002.

@@JG31392 Dave left the band before Jeff's death I think Dave left the band in February of the year 2013 and Jeff died in May

And I’m sure their egos are so gigantic that they can’t even slightly comprehend Lombardo made them sound like slayer🍻

These guys have been friends since High School.

Not a big Slayer fan but Dave was the pulse of the band. Now it's a flatliner. Dave keep on drumming! 🤘🏻

That times when Dave was in Slayer, when Jeff was alive, and Tom wasn't fat Santa.

I always felt dave was fully appreciated within the band he was cleary angry at tom and possibly Kerry when he gave them the finger and made a face why he was never given more credit because he was a good drummer yet his name never appeared on any songs yet he must have ideas musically

Tom a regular dude who just happened to stumble into an exteme metal act to make a living, still finding it all so hysterical

I was there when this happened and remember it. We didn't realize that Dave was flipping off Tom but thought he was flipping off the audience and didn't quite understand why, but now it makes sense.
