@@DocReasonableDear Tich… not only was he the most decent man I have ever met, he also counted Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton as friends. Tich and I spent a whole afternoon and evening chatting about the old days and package shows of unlikely pairings and European tours. Luckily I wrote down the conversations and I’ll try to put them into intelligible form for anyone interested. Suffice it to say that Jimi rated Tich as one of the very best players, full stop. He was. Forget the flash guys… Tich could play anything. I miss my friend so much. There is a gaping hole in our lives: Tich, Andy Golden (Eric Bell, Thin Lizzy): Robin Gair: Pete Lucas (Troggs): Gordie Haskell (King Crimson, just about everyone): Brad Bradbury: Noddy Dudman: Pete Catlin….. all these extraordinary and brilliant friends have left the building. Tomorrow will be the first time that Andy Golden, will not be here on my birthday for about 30 years. Andy may have been one of the technically best drummers in Europe: he was good enough for Thin Lizzy, Eric Bell, The Frankie Miller Full House Project…it’s endless. He also took on Robert Maxwell and his spawn and won. I miss him every day. My obituary of him is on the Salisbury Journal website but also on the National websites. I miss my friend so much… 😓😓😓

A perfect pop song. There is nothing that could be added or subtracted that would improve it. Brilliant songwriting and production.
These songs still get to me after all these years because they had great tunes
One of my dads favourites, Can still him whistling it although he's sadly gone, I'll sing it for you dad, miss you.
This song has never aged, and still sounds as fresh now as it did in the 60s. Its a testament to some good songwriting, and Dave Dee who had a great voice, and the guys. In some respects they were a band ahead of their time, Rip Dave.....

Agree with your comment, I also believe this band was not given the airtime or credit it deserved. Their songs were well ahead of their time.. Peggy Wood (Aotearoa)
'Xanadu' is absolutely stuffed with hooks. Playful Spanish guitar, urgent horns and of course Dave Dee’s bullwhip percussion. I love how the song peaks with a fantastically poker-faced spoken word section before the chorus gets one last giddy spin.
Ich bin 64 Jahre alt. Habe dieses Lied früher immer geliebt und jetzt hier zufällig gefunden . Ich freue mich sehr , Tag gerettet 👍🌹😊

It certainly takes me back every time I hear it this was played on the radio incessantly when I was a kid and I loved it.
Its Heartbreaking that 166 Galoots have given this classic the thumbs down ,Such a great tune that has been around before I was born in July 1973 and for over 50 odd years it's still standing as a testament of Classics ❤️
Fabulous guitar and trumpet playing
This music lifts you to great heights
Sadly, only John Dymond (Beaky) and Michael Wilson (Mick) as of 15 February 2024 still with us. RIP David, Trevor and Ian.
today someone told me about someone who is called Xanadu, and I immediately started to sing this song as loud as I could, one of my first singles back then, when I was 13!
I'm 41 and have grown up with a varied education in music from parents, right from the 1920's upwards, and I'm so glad i have. this song is brilliant! what a great tune and Dave Dee's voice is wonderful. I have 3 children, and I'm now passing on my love of good music to them. Thank God for KZread so we can all enjoy good music

Songs like this never die
How super fantastic is this song ❤❤❤
I was thirteen when this came out.... THAT WHIP !
When my mum died my dad bought us tickets to go to The solid silver 60s shows and they were amazing as I was a 60s baby, we went to a few of the shows and it didn't seem real with all the legends on the stage in awe really xx
First listened to this on a cheap pop hits record as a child, played by a Stromberg Carlson radiogram. Gave me a lifelong love of pop/ rock .

I first heard this song when I was 18 in the New York Pub in Wakefield West Yorkshire. My mate Paul took me and said watch what happens when it came on.....All the bar staff came around the front and danced to it with tambourines. I forgot all about it until I heard it again yesterday on UK Gold. Gives me shivers every time I listen to it. Classic!

I'd bet my life savings that your parent's said exactly the same about what you listened to when you were a kid. And that your grandparents said the same to your parents when they were kids. Do you see a pattern? Come back 20 years from now and you'll find your kids are saying it about your grandchildren's music..... which you will REALLY hate, btw!

Stuart Ongley i was born in 1962 so i really understand you. was a great era in the sense of Popular and Rock music. We were lucky.
Inak na vysvetlenie. Pamatam si ich, ked vy ste bol este babo. Ctila som tuto piesen.
I never really had much idea what this silly, nonsensical song was about, when it was in the charts in the old world we once knew in 1968 when I was a child. But I did know even at that young age that it was one of the greatest classics of pure pop music ever written and performed, and a testament to the creativity, inventiveness and optimism of all those involved. 50 long, strange, sad years later, at the opposite end of my life, nothing at all in that estimation has changed a jot, and the magic of this song and performance has not dimmed. Time has made me feel at times so very old - but masterpieces of joy and brightness and optimism and sheer raw talent like this make me feel forever young. RIP Dave Dee, and Trevor "Dozy" Ward-Davis. They will remain as timeless as Xanadu itself.

My first single I bought with my pocket money... Fitted right in with all the TV Western series and films I used to watch in those years!... I was stationed in St. Mawgan, England in very early 1987 when SSgt Jimenez caught me listening to the 'oldies' in the weight room. "What do you know about that kind of music...you're too young...". We began talkin' while lifting weights and the next thing I knew...he was loaning me his cassette tapes to record. Little did he know that I had those recorded tapes and Sony Walkman in my right cargo pocket, ran the cord up the back of my shirt/blouse and listened with my headphones during the midnight to 4 A.M. post. ... to his music. Thanks, SSgt Jimenez
