    From what I understand there was already a planned development of affordable single family homes that had already been voted on and approved by council. The developer made another proposal that included duplexes, townhomes, and single family homes, but the affordable homes were not actually included in the proposal, just a promise to develop them at some point. I think it is disingenuous to frame it as Dave Chapelle was against affordable housing when the original planned development already included affordable housing that Dave Chapelle took no issue with.

    The way I understood the Chapelle thing was that the developer was having problems getting their plans approved. So they used the guise of affordable housing in an effort to get approval and a tax write-off. The plans included 55 acres of +$400k homes (the cookie cutter type they use per gentrification) but only 1.7 acres would be dedicated to “affordable housing” for which they had no actual plans developed. I guess it was possible that they could renig later…idk I don’t have the article to reference but I heard Katie Halper discuss it when she appeared on some show-I think it was Rising-The Hill. And I hear a lot of people are trying to do anything to smear him now, if not for his cringe takes on the lgbt community because he challenged corp in the past. I’m tired of people making excuses for Rogan. His apology statement was correct but I hear a lot people defending him because of “context” or “it was 5,10,20 years ago” as if racism was ok in 2002 😒

This is what I dislike with social media phenomenon people take an acronym or label that May contextually apply to an individual and then run it to the ground and try to label everyone with it until it loses its meaning. There are legitimate circumstances where someone would not want certain projects near where they live I fail to see that is a political stance. He’s not a Karen. I thought the same when I first read up on this, but found out that the housing developers offered a small percentage of their land to build affordable housing, but they had no plans to build it. Instead, they wanted the community to do so. They are building approximately 128 single family homes that average $350k which is above the $68K median household income in that area. This is what Dave Chapelle was against. The citizens also made comments about not gentrifying the area and ensuring they have affordable apartments and home for senior living.

    I was looking for this. I'm not defending Chapelle as I don't feel like that's my job or my desire (and some things don't sit well with me about his approach whether in the specials or this committee meeting clip), BUT we're so quick to believe headlines that confirm our biases. This game the Chapelle AND many in his community are against, of these developers receiving funding or credits for a percentage of "affordable housing" only to take the money while legally skirting the commitment (in this case, outsourcing and relocating the building of these homes) is a major issue that has been happening everywhere. Say what you want about Chapelle, but if you just listen to the soundbite and not looking at the setup we are DISTRACTED by the controversy while these developers continue to siphon resources from communities.

Dave and the village he resides aren't against affordable housing. They are against the way it's been presented. The company proposed about 3 - 4 acres of land for single family homes, duplexes, apartments, and townhomes, but only using half of the land. The issue is that the "affordable" housing isn't affordable with the starting price of single family homes being 300k. So how is a single parent supposed to afford that? Dave and others are seeing this proposed plan as a cash grab disguised as affordable housing for tax breaks. I know we all have our opinions on the story, I just wanted to give you more context.

The council didn't approve it, or perhaps couldn't justify it, so the developer proposed donating under 2 acres of 55 to 'affordable housing' to reclassify the project as such. Except, that affordable housing wouldn't be developed by the developer in question. Sounds like a typical development scam. But maybe there's some other 'nuance' that I'm missing.

    I’m from the hood and currently upper middle class. Honestly I don’t want poor people around me either. Even when I was poor I hated shopping in my area. Everything was locked up or out of reach due to theft. You get in the check out and they got 12 different forms of payment, asking every 4 items “get I get a total?” And putting stuff back. And the people tend not to upkeep their property. Is my neighborhood fairly boring? Do I miss a lot of the cultural things that made me who I am today? Yes and yes. But I will never sit here and lie and say I would support low income housing being built around here. Oh and low income areas are loud AF. A lot of these folks do not keep regular ours and don’t care about people who need some damn sleep.

    I don’t understand what you are criticizing Dave Chappelle of, any homeowner regardless of race would be protective of their property value if they feel it is in fact threatened due to their investment and them living there. The article was titled this way for shock value to obviously paint him in a bad light and has all the key words to get people riled up; affordable housing and Dave Chappelle seemingly opposing it. This isn’t black or white issue it’s homeownership issue and people taking pride in their neighborhoods. As for the drama surrounding this article, there needs to be more details shared with the public in order for a determination to be made cause that article is incendiary for clicks yet doesn’t provide enough detail to explain the situation fully. Until you have owned property and invested in a neighborhood it’s too easy to be dismissive of those who are protective of it. There are a lot of failed affordable housing projects that unfortunately turn into unsafe ghetto/enclaves unles we know the full details of this project I wouldn’t be so quick to judge.

    Dave was talking for the people. There are now other clips of other community members also saying they don't want this investor there. Most stories say "affordable housing" starts at $300k when the median home price for that area is $149-259. The median income is $33k/yr. I thought the story and the clip...that was shared first by the Daily Mail BTW was used to disparage Dave and not the full story. ALWAYS take their news with a full sac of salt.

City planners and developers are not always the brightest, why does it always have to be something sinister? I think that’s how the media spun it to pique our interest & the public ate up. So negative. All the time.

I was never a fan though so my impact is maybe only half a drop :) I like Chapelle but I guess upper-class people gonna upper-class? Weaponizing money has been done for as long as money has existed and done by every race in every country. Perhaps Western Anglo tradition just historically did it better and more recently. (I don't mean "better" as a compliment). The "melting pot" that is America has a heavy dose of that tradition in the culture we grow in but also the system which evolved under the influence of that tradition persists, at least to an extent.

    It's my understanding that the original development plan is going ahead. That kind of blows a hole in the talk from the Chappelle defenders saying his main concern was for his modest middle-class neighbors who were going to pay more taxes. You MIGHT make the case that he's against "affordable housing" being a tax scheme... but Dave could just as easily have used his clout to put the pressure on the developer to ACTUALLY PROVIDE the housing.

    Things that are misding from the Dave Chapell story. 1. The "affordable housing" were houses valued at $300k and more and were advertised as being by Daves place. Which means they were houses for rich people and Dave was being used as an advertisement. 2. The affordable housing was a last second change in the whole contractual aggreement that no one signed for.

  • @hippyvan
    @hippyvan2 жыл бұрын

    So, of the 55 acres that this developer wanted to build, only 2 acres were to go to affordable housing. property developers use this tactic to shame homeowners into compliance. so characterizing this as an Affordable Housing project is wrong. If you've ever owned property in a neighborhood with homes and farms not tenements and buildings you would know that having these types of property designations close to your single-unit homes WILL drop your home's value. that's true for the rich and the middle-class. I would imagine Dave is patiently watching all of the trolls make fools of themselves and to see which celebrities are willing to throw their reputation behind this obvious hit piece, I'm most surprised by the amount of black people who are willing to throw him under the bus. (just willing to believe anything negative about someone whom they may disagree with) sad.
