I sometimes wonder why I don't feel the sting of favoritism. My mother had me at 15. She was a baby herself. So my grandparents decided to take me and let her build her life. She wouldn't have another child for 15 years. I think everyone assumed I would have problems with my baby sister. I would end up spoiling her more than my mom did . I've even had ex girlfriends assume I must hate my mom. I dont because she feels more like my older sister than my mom . My grandmother feels like my mom and what a mom she was. No salt at my actual mom but I couldn't have asked for more loving parents than my grandparents

Maybe the mother did help out Megan when she was younger. She was still helping her out by allowing her and the granddaughter to live in her home. I find it odd that Megan only had $30 to her name when her husband was employed and she had no household expenses. I don’t understand how she thought she was going to get away with using her mother’s financial info to buy a house. It’s not like her mom wouldn’t find out and wouldn’t her own husband question it as well?

Agree. The mother most likely helped out Megan over and over again. That is what usually happens with people that feel entitled, that have mental issues. The mother then had Megan and her granddaughter move in, where the child could get the support (food, clothing, shelter, etc.) she needed. She was supporting them both, and obviously did not realize the lengths Megan would go to to get what she wanted. Megan likely would not accept a "no" from her mother. Helen, being the baby of the family, likely was an empath and felt responsible for her niece too. Plus we have no idea what Megan said to Helen, to make her hesitate. TG Helen did call someone, otherwise this may have turned out even worse.

How could Helen not call the police for an hour and a half?? Or get out of the house? What happened to Megan's daughter? She was in the house too? After her mom killed her grandma?? Its unbelievable!

Question #1: Fear and extreme anxiety. Some people's first instinct is to call a loved one, not the police, in extreme circumstances. I was wondering about the status of the 8 year old daughter the whole time too. That had to be extremely traumatic.

Probably because she had a gun on her and she couldn’t. Carlos told her to get out of the house and she said, no. She said that she stayed because of the niece. So maybe she wanted to get to the niece and take the niece out of the house but Megan was talking with her and holding a gun on her. Or, sometimes those narcissistic family dynamics makes them feel like protecting their own. Maybe she figured to get the niece out and let Megan have a running start. You never know. Just a thought.

I hear ya. I’m the targeted one in my family. My sister does terrible things while I fight everyday to prove I’m worth, even to myself now. I’ll never be liked as much and I’m learning to separate myself from that thinking. I’m sry you went through that. And no. Of course there’s never ever a reason to kill someone outside of self defense, but inside, I get why it happens. I figure most of the time, escape from the hurt starts, then ways to end the trauma. I think it probably turns into a fantasy for ppl. At that point, all it takes is a trigger or a moment of dissociation. It would be helpful to everyone if we could get ppl help before it’s too late. A LOT less ppl would be dead around the world due to mental illnesses and emotional trauma. Ah well. Here’s hoping one day that society decides to put more emphases on ppls emotional state.

My heart is very heavy whenever I listen to conflicts within families, and this sort of unthinkable actions against a mother is just beyond shattering. At some point in my life, I realized that I’m extremely naive; I really didn’t have any idea that narcissism, sense of entitlement, disrespect, lack of empathy, irresponsibility, greed, etc. are so common in people… it’s so sad for Pamela and Helen😪

Favoritism sucks. Being rejected by your mother sucks. That type of toxic family dynamic can really do deep and long lasting damage. I would know, sadly... But that's not an excuse for murder. The mother's money was hers to do what she wanted with, period full stop. If your mom/family sucks, the correct course of action is to accept the reality of the situation. Grieve the loss of the family you should have had, and maybe get some therapy to help you with that grief. You can put up some boundaries with your family, or you might even want to go completely no contact with them. But you don't steal money from them, and you sure as hell don't kill them! Honestly, I suspect there may have been valid reasons for Pamela to treat Megan differently. Check out her picture at 3:42 ...that is not the face of a healthy person. That is the face of someone who is either on hard drugs and/or has serious mental health issues. That face, combined with the huge sense of entitlement that needed to be there in order for her to steal hundreds of thousands of dollars, makes me think Dr. Grande's analysis is spot on.

There was a comment about how giving all 3 sisters half a million would have avoided all this. That person should read up on the case of Nathan Carman who murdered his grandfather for a half million inheritance, squandered that in no time then murdered his mother to collect the remaining 7 million (rather than just work for a living, obviously). Some people are just lazy, greedy, etc.

Why didn’t Helen’s boyfriend call the cops after the first phone call when she said that her mom was dead? Helen had access to a phone why didn’t she call the police or leave? Being a Veteran Police Officer, I can attest to the fact that murder investigations can, indeed, entail a substantial amount of work.

Thank you, Nick Z, for your service. Law enforcement has to be one of the hardest jobs on earth and you don't get the respect, the pay, or the appreciation you deserve.

It looks like Megan also had a problem with the sister’s boyfriend getting to live in the free house. Maybe her being married (and sis not) also contributed to the sense of entitlement, along with her having a child and Helen didn’t.

Scary. I come from a extremely dysfunctional family. I am the scapegoat and I live thousands of miles away from the rest of my family. My mother has used triangulation so everyone is at odds with one another. I have one normal sister, and two dangerous sisters. Their specialty is lying about people usually men and charging them. I fear this type of thing is more common than we realize in that they get away with hurting others.

I can only imagine what it must be like in a family where there IS an obvious favorite. How sad for her, and for the fact SHE was dependent upon her Mother, who may have held Helen as a favorite. I am so sorry for the family remaining behind.

My question is why didn't Helen call the police? I guess it's possible it was to protect Megan's daughter, but... Real head scratcher.

I love your videos, Dr. Grande! How do we know that Pamela did not give Megan a house when she was just starting out in her 20s? Megan may have received the same "gift" that Helen received, but may have squandered all that she received. It is likely, however, that Pamela was not yet financially able to give such an expensive gift to her older daughters, 20 years ago.

I think she did help out the oldest daughter that murdered her. That daughter to me looks like she's on drugs. That might be the real reason she did what she did. To get money for her habit. Not for a house. She lived back and forth with the mom and her own husband, she didn't need a house. I think the mom figured she'd somehow squander the money on drugs or whatever. That's why she didn't want to help her out anymore.

Sometimes the situation is complicated ie parents have spent a lot on said child over the years and were tired and they are giving the other child same opportunities. An example is one child went to college and always been on straight path with no issues vs you have bailed out another child numerous times and paid off a lot of debt etc. So it's not that they are playing favoritism it is that one child has squandered their opportunities. If I have bailed you out to the tune of 400k and decide to buy a house for other daughter it shouldn't be an issue.

Junko Furuta was a 17 year old Japanese woman who was randomly abducted, held captive, and brutally tortured for 44 days before ultimately succumbing to the countless injuries her tormentors inflicted upon her. It still seems like a lesser known case outside of Japan, and I'd really like to see it get more exposure

I just LOVE Dr. Grande ! His subtle digs are HILARIOUS ! Most of all, I love his quiet, unassuming way with words.

The lesson here is to not spoil one child and leave the other out, resentment builds up and people snap. It really does cause catastrophic damage to a kids emotional development when they grow up in the shadow of their sibling(s).

As the oldest child in my family I can relate to being basically homeless and living with your parents who are, the whole time paying for your siblings to have a whole ass house built, I don't think the narcissism comes in when you want to be your parents favorite I think it's natural to want to be loved by the person who gave birth to you. To want to be seen as equal to your siblings, however the entitlement and narcissism comes in when Megan had every opportunity to get up and go get for herself what her siblings had been given, instead of getting a degree and setting goals and making her own she wanted to simply be GIVEN what her younger sister had EARNED. she was lazy and had no drive and even if her mother had given her what she wanted it still wouldn't have been enough. Not once did she think about how "if mom had given me a house, how would I keep it up, how would I pay my bills, how would I do this, or that" she was very short sighted and greedy and took two people's lives who had no value to her other than money...it's really sad, she's pathetic and I hope she rots in jail

She was married and her husband is in the military. She stayed with her mom when he was deployed. She probably thought if she stole the money for a house for them, then he'd pay the taxes and bills, I guess.

Megan likely threatened her and others (Megan's own daughter too?) if Helen called the police. Helen would be totally in shock by this whole event, and everyone has different reactions when in shock. This was her own sister...how does a young person accept the change from loving sister to cold blooded murderer? It would be hard to think clearly.

A huge number of parents don't realize the importance of treating all their kids equally. This include emotional and financial equity. If a child minutely felt he isn't being treated as his brothers or sisters, we can say that the parents just created their own hell. Consequences will appear years later and the parents will not be able to understand the hard situation because humans forget all the time. No one can live with injustice, especially from parents.!!!

I think the misery was handled really even handed. I left at ,17 and my little sis married at 16. My mother kept telling lies to people about how evil we were until she realized nobody believed her. At 53 she checked in to a mental health facility and never came out. Bet she drove the staff to find other careers to follow.

They have the same mom!!. Why was Megan driving back, and forth from West Virginia to Virginia? I noticed she did the same thing when living in New Mexico, driving to Texas often.

I dunno I’d be pretty upset about _that_ level of favouritism, especially if I was broke. Not upset enough to kill of course, but that’s pretty damn insulting.

I worked with Helen at the time of this incident. We all knew Helen wouldn't have done it. What a terrible thing.

It's his "defense" strategy: Act a fool until the judge throws him out of the courtroom, then when they inevitably find him guilty he can later attempt to overturn it because the judge dismissed him AND his lawyer (since he's acting in his own defense). I've seen it before & it's pathetic.

That poor boyfriend. I hope he's not still haunted by that phone call. 😔

My mother has favoritism, I tell her that whenever we have arguments when I was a teen, she denies it, which I don't understand because it's obvious, my other siblings can tell, even the favorite child knows, even strangers can tell, lol! But I don't care anymore, I've outgrown the favoritism shit, I have accepted the fact that it's normal for some parents to have favorites, it can't be helped. I just told myself, if I'm going to have kids of my own, even if I will have a favorite child, I will try my hardest to not let them see it and feel it. I do the same with my niece and nephews, no playing favorites. It can twist some peoples head in a dangerous way, of course, not everyone will be like Megan, but you never know. lol!

It also highlights the idiocy of having loaded guns in your house. Unbeknownst to us, maybe Megan had always been difficult and the mother would've helped her buy a house in the future, with the proviso of getting a damn job! Because she was at that time helping Helen get a house, It does not mean , that at some time in the future, she would not have helped Meghan get one too. I'd say it's less about perceived favoritism and more about a child that's always been difficult and the mum was trying to handle that in her own way. She sounded like a generous mum to me, all her grown children were still living at home with their own kids. I think it unfair that she's thought of as somehow to blame for her murderous daughter's evil behavior. Good people can have a horrible child.

First time I’ve ever disagreed with Dr. grande. As a person with ptsd (CPTSD) and at 42 just recognized what I was dealing with, this was likely not narcissistic behavior imo. It sounds more to me like someone fantasizing about ending the pain felt by a mothers rejection, and then in the heat of a moment, acting on that impulse possibly due to disregulation or similar states of mind. As a teen I almost found myself in a similar situation. My moms words/actions had hurt me for the last time (I told myself) and I charged off, almost running to my dad’s gun cabinet. Right before I got there, the seam in the carpet tripped me and I fell into it breaking the glass front everywhere. That jarred me back into reality like a light switch. Now that I’m older, I realize my dad never left the guns loaded, but because of my emotional reaction, my life would have changed forever. Now that I’m older, I also realize my mother (who I do love), was a classic textbook narcissist. Only last year when I demanded she go with me to counseling or she wouldn’t see me or my family ever again, did the therapist touch on this, later counseling just me. I can’t explain to ppl who “don’t get it” what it feels like to hate yourself and know what’s causing it in childhood. And it doesn’t just go away in your early adult years either. Now I’ve learned a ton of techniques to throw myself a rope. I have a very supportive husband who’s on board with me too…. But back then, I feel like this could have been me. I also feel like her hijacking her moms accounts was her way of “sticking it” to her mom, not entitlement. It sounds like money was a controlling factor in that family. She likely knew and planned how she would hit her mom where it hurt. When that didn’t work, I think she was already spiraling for god knows how long, and reacted in a way she assumed would end her pain. So while it’s never ok to harm ANYone, I do understand it. I’m grateful I was able to get help starting when I checked myself into a mental hospital at 16. I’m also aware that not everyone will be as lucky as me, and this was probably not narcissistic entitled behavior, but either a wanting to harm the person who had hurt her for years, or to end the cause of her suffering; in the end, probably both.

At the mother's defense, we don't know how she treated the oldest daughter. She let her and the granddaughter live there with her while at the same time this woman (Megan) is married to a man and would go and live with him, too, the father of her little daughter. The Aunt (sister of the deceased mother) gave some insight into the relationship. She said that Megan used to babysit Helen but after Helen got older or grew up, she became jealous of her. I think the middle sister even said as much, too. Megan would have had to split their mom's money with the sister (the middle one) she didn't murder.

I was raised by two Narcs and never thought to harm either of them though i did think to run away many times but did not becaue I new education was the way to be free *went on to become a psychologist and animal behaviorist BA* MA* I always knew even as very young child that there was something wrong with them NOT ME Life was not easy but each of us reacts to our environments according to our own unique personalities and just because she was not favored or IF she was raised by a Narc does not mean you kill your family Sounds to be that she was spoiled Had no job ,no education and wanted a quick way to get money (my thoughts on this case)

@@lisamac8503 I’m sry u were raised in that environment. I don’t think ppl Give enough thought into the psychology of the children growing up at the hands of ppl hell bent on manipulating them. As adults it’s easier to navigate. I am not a violent person and even managed to get two university degrees, even after almost failing HS, because as a much older adult, I separated myself from my mom and suddenly realized I wasn’t an eternal screw up. The games and manipulation stopped. For years I thought it was me. I hated myself and I hated her for not loving me because I was defective. Took me years to realize this. I cannot tell you how many times I reached out for help. Just recently, we had to be all in one home due to Covid and two hurricanes that tore everything up in Louisiana. In that time, my husband and I were having an argument while washing dishes together. She walked in, rolled her eyes and told me I should just go check myself back in to a mental ward… and walked out. My husbands jaw dropped. As a kid she told me to stop hugging so much because only retarded kids do that. She told me she disliked me because I was so much like my dad who she couldn’t stand. And I tried so hard everyday to make her happy with me. Wrote essays in school about how she was my hero, almost named my son after her dad cause I thought she would be thrilled… I can forgive her now because as an adult, I realize she did not have the ability to “love” me but she did keep a roof over my head and food on the table and protected me physically. I don’t have anger now as long as I keep her at arms length. I’ve always had been a kind and shy kid. I was and am now, not violent, suffering from psychosis, nor do I have any legal records…. So for me to have had the want to end my own suffering, and recognizing my own mother as the source, it shocks me to this day. But I was there. It wasn’t a movie. It was me. So respectfully, I think you are holding ppl to a standard and assuming they experienced things similar to you and therefor should handle it as well as you did. That’s just not how it works. We can agree to disagree I guess, that was just my experience and where I’m at now as a stable adult. I’m grateful I’m here and didn’t get farther in hurting my own mom. I now have 2 amazing kids and a great husband. I’d never have had that if I would have been able to get much farther in what my brain was screaming at me that day. THAT day as a teen, I was determined to make it stop. I didn’t even see her as a person then… or myself. She was an obstacle keeping me from some form of happiness and sanity. I still don’t know what happened to me that day. Can remember feeling like something was squeezing my heart, lungs/chest and I felt rage and panic and pain. So these stories always grab my ear. I don’t ever want to justify what happened to this family and taking a life. I DO however want to share my experience so that ppl might see it from a diff perspective and we can help prevent kids from making terrible mistakes, and as a result, save a few lives.

It is very difficult to explain to others unless they have experienced narcissistic abuse and family abuse in general what it does to one's self esteem and psyche. Like yourself, I don't condone violence or murder except in self defense, however, I do have compassion and understand how this can happen in families. It does unspeakable emotional damage and trauma. Like yourself I was raised by abusive narcissists and you can get to such a turbulent level of anger, rage, and sadness after decades and years of toxicity. Just like how I have empathy of people who snap during crimes of passion and affairs. It takes a toll on the mind and blurs your emotions. I am at that point too of cutting my mother from my life because she refuses to get professional help for her mental illness nor take accountability for her abusive actions. You are not alone and no one can understand unless they have experienced this firsthand.

Dr Grande, may I offer one suggestion. When you talk about family members after the initial introduction, when you mention someone the second time, can you remind us who your talking about, for example you could say "Megan, the oldest daughter" rather than just saying Megan

I can't help but to think that the mother's action in some infinitesimal way set the stage for Helen's egregious behavior.

It's not necessary to give all the siblings the same things, jealoussy can happend even when everybody have equal things, cause jealousy is a perspective. I had a different experiemce with my siblings, them and I allways have encourage my parents to help finantially if we think someone needs it. I even discovered that my bros secretly asked my parents to not charge me and just gave me something I was planning to buy from them.
