Data Frog SF2000 Review

Ойындар

I purchased one of the (apparently) very popular Data Frog SF2000 handheld retro game emulation devices. Join me as I look this thing over, play test it, and then tell you if you should buy one for yourself or not, in the monotonous style of reviewing that you ONLY get on / @jonobst !

    It has a specific wireless controller that you can order off of Ali-Express which is the sf900 that you can use to play 2 players with friend/fam/etc. Hope this helps. Yoshi island struggles because of the use of super fx chip that was originally used on the cart to give it an extra boost of power. So if the emulation device has less ram it will struggle with super Mario world. Good review!

    Great video, thanks for uploading, I appreciate it!!! I have one question though. I have taken roms out of the individual emulator folders and put them in the ROMS folder so when I go to the game list feature my favorite games are there and I don't have to do all that scrolling. The games show up but none of them load. As I said I just took them from one folder on the SD card and put them in another. Any idea why they won't run when they are in the game list section????

    @@jonobst I really appreciate the fast reply and especially appreciate you taking the time to make a video on it to help me out. I just watched the video and that's EXACTLY the way that I did it myself, so I went back in to try and load the games again from the game list folder and made a rather puzzling discovery. NONE of the games I copied from the arcade folder, which are the only ones I tried yesterday, will load. However, all of the games that I coped from the SFC and MD folders, which i just tried now, load and run perfectly!!! I have no idea why the arcade games won't load, but since the other systems run it's something I can live with, so unless for your own curiosity you want to try and figure it out, I don't want to take up any more of your time. Thanks again for your interest and time, much appreciated!!

    @@vincemartinelli9689 you are 100% correct with the arcade ROMs being copied over not working. Fascinating! Must be a bug in their software, wonder if they will release a patch.

    With firmware fixes and some tweaking (ROMsets, box art, etc) it's a lovely little cheap thing that you can keep bringing as an excellent present to people who are not enthusiasts. Especially the black version, it looks really slick. And I really, really love that the battery is so easily replaceable and widely available. C+ if I didn't know the price, A+ knowing it ;)

    Hi, nice video! I just got mine yesterday and noticed that Zelda Minish Cap was missing from the library, so I added it myself. For some reason, I can’t get to run it. Have you, by any chance, had the same problem?

  • @jonobst

    Hello, and thanks for watching! I didn't have this ROM, so I downloaded it from a Google search and was able to load it up without issue. I'd post the link, but Nintendo is very anti-piracy. One thing I would suggest is renaming the file! The ROM I found was named "Legend of Zelda, The - The Minish Cap (U).gba" and the emulator might have trouble with some of those characters. I renamed it to ZMC.gba and it just worked. So to sum up, my suggestions are: 1) Rename the file to remove all spaces and non-text characters 2) Find a different ROM Let me know your result!

    @@jonobst thank you for answering my question! I tried to download two different roms and I did what you suggested, but nothing changed. Basically, the game starts running, but as soon as I press start it freezes on the load game screen and you can just hear the background music and see a lagging image of the load game screen 🤷🏻‍♀️ Also, I’ve noticed in the video that your console has multiple languages, but mine only has English and Chinese, so I’m starting to think that I might have gotten a faulty one? Or maybe one that is older? Did you update yours or something?

    2.4 ghz is not WiFi or bluetooth. 2.4ghz is just the wireless signal that the handheld support for wireless controller so if you had any wireless controller that support 2.4ghz then you could sync the handheld to that controller. It essentially turns the SF2000 into a sort of mini console. To use a 2.4ghz wireless controller on it, simply enter pairing mode on the wireless controller you're using and it will eventually sync to the handheld, no dongle is necessary. Retro-Bit and 8Bitdo had some very good 2.4 ghz wireless controllers that will work on that. As for the wireless handle that manual refers to, there are some package of the handheld where it came with two wireless controllers, the one you bought is a base model with no wireless controllers so that's why it sounds off. The bundle that came 2 wireless controllers had a switch that says P1 and P2 on it, P1 is for Player 1 and P2 is for Player 2.

    On the SUPER NES GAMES: if you back out and re-enter the same title it will run at full FPS, there are a few exceptions, FF3 and more graphic intense games will use a frame skip down to 30 fps. Not sure why this happens because the same titles run at 60 on the game boy advanced so you are better off to play them there. However for the ones that did not get a port to GBA, you have to have the newest software update for it to work "properly" but you enter the game you want to play, use the hotkeys to quit and relaunch the same title and they work fine.

  • @jonobst

    @jonobst

    Жыл бұрын

    Yep I've noticed the same. Might be a little bug in the launcher code? Not sure why relaunching would resolve if it was the emulator itself.

    Nice review. I bought four of these because they are so affordable. You can get them with a P2 'handle' which allows a second person to play along with games that support that. Totally agree with your grade of B- because there is no support for tweaking more processor intensive games, and also no button configuration. I have recently learned that Data Frog has published a few updates that address some of these issues. They are probably selling tons of these, so there is an excellent chance for many software updates as well as a version 2, 3, etc. A great value for the money. I remember paying the same amount for a single original GB cartridge.

    I got one for my kiddo. I got him 2 family pocket Gp-40's and the screens broke within a few days. They are decent for the price but these are MUCH more durable and they play more Arcade games and GBA and most $20 devices don't do that. if you have issues with SNES just launch them twice. Find the title you want to play and launch it, quit out and relaunch the same title and the game runs at full speed.
