A few years ago, a tornado flattened a Starbucks. The video shot from a restaurant from across the street showed the Starbucks going down like a movie set facade, despite how substantial the building looked. Keyword there is "looked". I've seen a hotel that looked like it had thick solid concrete columns out front you'd think could stand up to a nuclear bomb. Then a hurricane hit and those columns turned out to be some of the cheapest wooden construction imaginable. Nothing but hollow cylinders made out of stucco, plywood, and wood framing. The equally solid looking but flimsy overhang those columns supported ripped apart and fell down on and wrecked several vehicles owned by storm chasers who were filming the hurricane.
