    Great Video! I never would have attempted this before, but after watching your video I went for it and followed your instructions to the T. Every thing went smoothly. I ordered the same gear you did however my apologies as I didn't use you links. I was waiting for Prime day & forgot. (after all I am 79 yrs young and don't have the best memory!) Lastly but most important stay safe through these difficult times.

    Very nicely explained. If this RAV4 happens to be hybrid and if dash cam hard wired then it would not void warranty? The second method looks very safe and not touching fuse box and using cigarette lighter socket. I would be very interested if you have made a video for dash cam (front and back) with parking mode recording( separate battery backup) and not hard wired. Thank you.

    You'll want to follow the instructions provided in your purchase. Mine didn't have a yellow cable. Your purchase allows the camera to continue recording while the car is off until a low voltage point is reached. For simplicity, you can combine the red and yellow cables together and tap into the same fuse in the video. This will turn off the camera when the car is off.

  • @Rav4Gen5

    @Rav4Gen5

    3 жыл бұрын

    I am not familiar with that hard wire kit. It allows recording while the engine is off until a low voltage. I don't recommend this because Rav4 has issues with battery drain issue and this will escalate that issue. See instructions of the kit but looks like you need to find another fuse slot with constant power. Not sure. Pig tail of fuse tap goes towards the direction of the door.

  • @Rav4Gen5

    @Rav4Gen5

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey. Thanks for the feedback. You certainly can use the cams that have park mode but I would not recommend it. There is already reported battery issues with the Rav4 and this will not help. I would recommend just buying a large battery bank. Connect car to battery bank so that car will recharge the bank. Connect the cam to the bank so it can run with or without car on. Not perfect but it does completely isolated from the RAv4 battery. The cams use low watts so it will last a long time before the bank dies.

    Blackvue looks like some very overpriced stuff. I would just buy an Anker brand on Amazon. You can get a fuse tap kit like in the video to recharge the power bank. Quick question: what if you're going to be piggybacking off of another fuse? Do you insert the original fuse to the "add-a-fuse" in-line with the positive cable and the dash cam fuse next to it or it doesn't matter? Since I will be using an existing 10A fuse and my dash cam is 5A, would it be safer to insert the original 10A fuse first, then the 5A dash cam fuse to the "add a fuse"? I kinda repeated myself there but it's a little confusing. I would think the 10A goes first since the accessories for my car draws the greater current and then it trickles down to my 5A dash fuse. If that makes sense.

    You'll need a volt meter and find a fuse that has power running through it while the car is off. Make sure you buy a battery jumper in case your dash cam voltage meter fails. You put the original fuse in one slot and another lower amp fuse in the other slot. The original fuse goes into the slot closest to the pins. I'll make a video on fuse tapping into a Rav4.

    Correct, you don't need to fill in both slots if it is an empty slot. Only the slot furthest from the pin. Most likely 5 amps is plenty and will protect the wires too.

    Good idea. For me , it is in the direction towards the door. I need to double check that though. Might be different depending on the fuse you are going into. You want the current to travel through the fuse. I think my weekend is sunny so good day to make a video on this.

    I wonder why you insert another fuse in the add a fuse. If the slot in the fuse box is empty you don't need that second fuse, it MUST remain empty. And one more think, the direction of the add a fuse DOES matter, you have to find out the hot side of the slot in the fuse box and then insert the add a fuse accordingly.

    Awesome tutorial but I personally think it is not the best solution to tap into the fuse box cuz our new RAV4 got more electronic component and complexity than before. I’ve used an OBD power adaptor to supply power to the dashcam to regulate its power delivery and that way the manufacturer can’t deny service to car saying we’ve added something to the car that is not intended to be there in the first place. (The orb adaptor will also regulate voltage base on your brand of dashcam “

    Thanks for sharing. It is a good point. I should have included the OBD as 3rd option. I am totally comfortable with fuse box adaptions. It built to protect electronics and I am tapping into an empty slot. It can also be easily be removed if Toyota is going to complain about it . Depending on the settings, your OBD option might keep the cam on while the car is off. Which is nice because you'll have around the clock recording but you might be cycling your battery more depending on how low the voltage actually gets before protection turns on.

  • @Abstruseish
    @Abstruseish3 жыл бұрын

    This isn't helpful at all for me. The wire shouldn't be in the weather-stripping or across the top of the airbag on the A pillar. Also, the orientation of the fuse tap definitely matters. If you install it the wrong way and remove the fuse it would still work, so the fuse wont be in line protecting the equipment.
