Dashain is celebrated to mark the goddess Durga's victory over the demon Mahishasura, the son of Mahisi (Buffalo) and a descendant of sage Kashyap. The battle between Durga and Mahishasura lasted for ten days. Since Durga killed Mahishasura, Durga is also called Mahishasuramardini, meaning "The Killer of Mahishasura".
