When Navy ships sail great distances across the Pacific Ocean, they often link up out at sea with supply ships, in order to refuel and replenish their stores (instead of going miles and miles out of their way to find a port). Supply ships come right alongside these warships -- dangerously close -- without either vessel stopping. Passing fuel lines and cargo while in motion like this is a tense, risky operation. To ease the tension of these underway replenishment or "unrep" moments, the warships often *blast* music over their loudspeakers. Crew and passengers (Marines like me) would line the rails and sing along at the top of their voices. When my ship did these unreps, we would loop "Love Train" through our sound system. This video just brought me back to the summer of '96 ... singing 'til my voice gave out, out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Good times.

The thing I enjoyed the most about this song during the months following its release was the feel of it. The happy feel of it. It was soulful, no doubt. How could it not be, given it was the O'Jays. But the happiness and hopefulness of it always shined through.

Thank you Lord in Heaven for Daryl Hall, the OJay’s and Daryl’s band. I get choked up listening to them, they’re just the best! I had the blessing to see them in the late seventies when they played the Jackson County Fair. I was at stage front with my arms creeping over the front edge of the stage. They were great then, and better now!

I love this performance y'all. I have seen it so many times and as I love to sing this song tonight I was singing along happily and my Blue Heeler (Australian Cattle Dog- she's three) decided to howl during the chorus! She has never done that before. I will post a vid here when I can. Y'all will love it. Darryl- sorry I missed ya when I lived in Charleston.
