Darwin California Mines: Exploring Two Vertical Shafts And One Adit⛏️🔦

In this video, we explore a few of the mines in the historic Darwin, California area. The town of Darwin was named after Dr. Darwin French. French had led an expedition to the area in 1860 and found silver at what would become the Coso Mine. The town of Darwin was settled in 1874 after the silver was discovered there.
We start our explore by rappelling down a large vertical shaft. We found some large stopes and a very deep shaft. Next, we visited a few other shafts with interesting headframes and climbed down the sketchy ladders in one of them. After that, we drove a fun Jeep trail, where we found an adit that we explored to wind up our day. We ended up in Darwin for a few photographs of this historic mining town.
We hope that you enjoy the video!
Here is a link to a video of the old road that ran from Lookout City to Darwin and the cabin and mines along the way.

There are few things I hate more than shaft fires. There was one in this district 40-ish years ago caused by welding; the shaft was never used for hoisting again afterwards. In my opinion it contributed to premature closure of that mine because cycle time for the haul trucks up the decline got to be too much.

Good to see the Darwin area being explored. Off Darwin Wash Road (Old toll road) there are a number of mines to the east southeast of the town that are interesting. The roads are probably washed out now making access more difficult. There is a rather large glory hole that can been seen on Google Earth. I have explored those mines for many years. I have not accessed the lower levels however. The CDMG, in 1958, published "Economic geology of the Darwin quadrangle, Inyo County, California". Well worth the reading. Don't miss the "calcite hole".

Hi Peter. Yes, that is a concern. I believe that the majority of rats that we see are wood rats(pack rats) and are not likely to carry the Hantavirus. Still, you don't want to inhale the dust from their nests. Of greater concern is a rock falling down a shaft and hitting us, bad air, dust with silica in it, rope or other climbing gear failing, cave-ins. It's a very dangerous and unhealthy hobby. Thanks for bringing up that important subject.👍😁

Having grown up in the Mojave Desert I loved going out in the hills with my Dad to visit all the little ghost towns and “almost” ghost towns that were off the highways, many of whom that are now gone. It was nice to see that Darwin has survived. I have said it before and will say it again. You must LOVE this hobby so much that you continue to put your lives in such jeopardy dropping. down those old, ratty shafts. I was amazed that some of the rungs in that second shaft didnt break given the abysmal condition of that old, dried out wood. While its probably accurate that you probably can’t jump that high. I have no doubt you could easily complete some of those. “Iron Man” contests given your excellent physical condition from rappelling down and then up the hundreds of mines you visit every year!

Hi Al. So happy to hear that your dad took you out exploring as a youngster. I'm guessing those are some great memories for you. Mine exploring kind of 'gets in your blood' as the ol saying goes. It's kind of like camping when, at the time, it can seem like a lot of work and sometimes under miserable conditions sleeping on the ground and getting cold and wet. But when you look back at it after you are home and have had a warm shower, the memory seems pleasurable, and you can't wait to do it all over again. Thanks for the nice comment!👍😁

Yes, of course, going down is much easier than climbing up. I have a terribly arthritic big toe joint that will have to be fused someday. I'm waiting until it becomes unbearably painful until I have it fixed. Maybe the world will end, and I won't have to do it. Lol Thanks for the comment!👍😁

@@TomandJulieMineExploring Hey Tom, I didn't get mine fused, I got artificial joints. You should see a doctor that performs those regularly. It will make a huge difference. Mine were almost fused with arthritis! You will like being able to bend your toes! Out of those 19 surgeries I've had, the toes were not as bad as I expected... While we are on the subject of global annellation, which place do you think would make the best shelter (besides noplace)?

Hey, I have a surveying book published in 1814, the owner signed it in 1861. My father inherited the book from an Aunt's estate and now I study it sometimes to see how the old timers fudged the lines so to speak. The Cl mark could be the location of the surveyor's Circumferentor if he was turning an angle around a bend in the passage. When he would come back at a later date to survey the miner's progress he could set up his instrument at the same location, confirm angles and continue on. Today that could be called a benchmark. With today's GPS the lost art of guestimation and trigonometry are replaced. Take care.

Hi Carl. I spent several years land surveying in my younger days. I learned a lot on that job. The surveyors had to keep track of where the working was and where it's going. Especially if they were trying to intersect a known ore body and not just following a vein. Your book sounds interesting. Thanks for the comment!👍😁

I've repelled out of choppers into forest fires but never really into a Mine Shaft just for fun, even when I was a Lode Miner never repelled much but I have Hung from a Bosun Chair while Scaling the Ribs and Back of Mines but Tom and Julie that looks super fun. We Lode Miners often burn tnt boxes, burlap, old clothes and timber trims etc... in Mines to chase out bats, rodents, snakes, vermin and insects and sometimes even trespassers too, they smell the smoke and suspect that it may be poison Mine gas and they stay out. Julie the Head Frame Pegboard is often used as a way to keep an eye on the Skip Car or Lift Level /Depth and they mark the lift cable every so far and every time the Hoist Jockey see a mark or stops the Skip he put a Peg into to remind him at what level or depth the skip or lift is at but yes sometimes lode counts too, Tom when I had my Mines Lumber was so scarce that I used 2x4's and even smaller, often the wood is not for support but to stop movement of a load like with a hanging wall or Stope Rib. Long Comment I Know, looks more like a Book, lol. I Love you Vids, keep em coming, seen my latest short? I Love it when you or anyone for that matter comments on my channels videos. Hi Desert Dog. Yes, it is a dangerous and difficult part of entering or exiting a vertical shaft. I have figured out what works best for me. The soft ladder, or etrier, is very handy along with a long sling for a good handhold that is prusiked to the rope so you can slide it as necessary works great. I've been stuck a couple of times, which is not fun. Thanks for chiming in!👍😁

There is always water at Darwin Falls, however, the remnants of Hurricane Hillary washed out all access. Large sections of Darwin Wash Road (Old Toll Road) are gone. Most of the road from Hwy 190 to the parking area for Darwin Falls is gone, as is the trail to the falls. Unfortunately, also can't access China Garden Springs area. For many years, there was a population of gold fish in the little pond there. I have been wondering how they have fared. Some of the town folk in Darwin used to care for them. I towed their truck out of some deep sand one day. They got buried to the frame.

I wonder about the smut markings in mines if they were done just to look old or if someone actually did it back when they were doing the mining. If they are in deep, hard to reach area's I would suspect they are legitimate and real. I bet that rope will give you a work out going up and down. I don't know if I have seen another video of someone documenting the Darwin Mines. Glad you did them.

Hi Glen. You are correct to be suspicious about some of the soot markings in mines made to mimic the old graffiti the miners made with their carbide headlamps. I suspect that the markings in the mine in this video are made with a butane lighter and not very old. I can usually spot the difference between old and newer markings. Yes, rope work can be tiring, but at the same time, enjoyable and the only way to reach some places in the old mines. Thanks for the nice comment!👍😁

The longest climb I've done is about 300 feet. We've been down in deeper shafts on rope like 500 or 600 feet but were able to partially use ladders to aid in climbing out. That makes it much easier. Hi Dan. I have a customized light that is fixed to always point the way the camera is pointing. I can't tell you the brand because I don't know it. It is about 3500 lumens and was originally a spot beam until I diffused it heavily with a few sheets of plastic from photo protector sleeves. It uses a large remote battery that I keep in my pants pocket. The camera and light are both mounted on a piece of wood. You might see it hooked on to my pack when I'm climbing a ladder or something like that. I also have an older Coast handheld adjustable beam rechargeable that is really good. Thanks for the gear question.👍😁
