@@SMG2024I ain’t trying to judge but you sound corny AF! I kept coming across videos of him playing the most simple retarded grooves for about a year, and of course I saw what I considered a ridiculous set up that was not ergonomically and I figured it was just a gimmick. Being from Philly and a fan of Questlove since 1993 I also figured he was just kind of copping his feel but taking it to an even more ridiculously simplified level… Then I came across a few more videos where he was displaying a little bit more technique, then a little bit more swing, then one night I spent about two hours watching videos of him I had never seen and realized the guy has got world class understanding of time. He’s very advanced with time. He’s got a meter going on inside of his head that you just can’t fuck with. I’m also huge fan of Dennis Chambers, Vinny, Tony Williams and many of the worlds greatest players. You really need to understand rhythm to realize how good this guy is! Good Luck! 😂

Daru plays with such a cool feel. Similar to Hiatus K does little time stretches like rushing a few bars, or slowing down hat and snare hits a tad. Not everyone likes this style, but I love it. I love the super tight on the grid stuff too, but sometimes, a little time stretching is wicked fun. And for someone that loves kick hat snare gigs, I’m fine with his toms and bigger cymbals are mainly there for show. :-) Go Daru!

That first clip is a great example of how a bassist can lock in with a drummer, the third clip is a great example of how a guitarist can completely ignore the drummer. It's ALL about making it feel good TOGETHER. Listen to, and lock with, your drummers people! This guy's got a DEEP pocket, get in there!

I think you're being too critical here, you can tell this is more of a jam sesh, than a strict studio sesh, so less a focus on the perfect tempo and more a focus on creating some dope s*#!. Both Daru and that amazing guitarist are genius in their own right, that was some Hendrix s*#!. and its only like 30 seconds

This is called pure pocket drumming. It’s the most simplest form of drumming but in the most difficult way. You only play what is 100% necessary for the song, but you somehow overtake the pulse with just your groove, there isn’t breaks, or hiccups, everything strings along with you, like a machine but real. If he wanted daru could do stick tricks and crazy fills between his hands and feet, but pulling back- controlling the pocket and commanding the pulse is entirely different and difficult in its own way. Reason why Steve gadd is looked at as one of the greatest, he wasn’t flashy, but played perfect pocket.

@@matthewroreilly for me if i like to be honest he is missing the snare hit sometimes and it sounds out of groove totally. And another thing when you listen lots of his performances he is using just diagrams. The same fills all the time. I think (for me) the huge respect should be given but for people like vinnie colaiuta or weckl and those guys. Just my opinion

Who made you the drum setup police? And with a little searching you can learn why he sets up the kit that way. He can play the $#@! out of a common setup. His unique setup is part of his sparse sound and feel as well as for showmanship.

The way common people adulate pedestrian talent never ceases to amaze me. No stick control, missed hits, tense, no velocity control, nothing but 4/4? That's not talent folks, it's mediocre. Stop praising people who don't deserve it. Stop making stupid people famous.

Wow thanks for setting us all straight with your infinite knowledge and wisdom about rhythm. How do you know he is stupid? What do you think all the talented, professional musicians he works with and the people who love to dance and play to his grooves understand about his playing that you don't? Your comment is ignorant, belligerent and it only leads me to believe you are very insecure. "not for you?" sure, but dude's got chops and excellent time feel, which he uses to do 16th/32nd/triplet note displacements without ever losing the beat (ok I'm sure he does on occasion, everyone does).
