Maul really was Obi wan’s nemesis. Two sides of the same coin. One gave into his pain and the other rose above it. Both lost their brothers in a way.

The death of Maul in the end was more tragic than you'd have thought possible, because you can see the pain and regret in Obi-Wan's expression. For all the suffering Maul had caused him, in the end he was just another victim of the Sith, and perhaps the last person in the galaxy who truly understood everything Kenobi had been through. When Maul died in his arms, in a twisted way, he was losing the only friend he had left.

To me, the most heartbreaking thing about Maul is him constantly trying to form connections with people, but since the only relationship dynamic he’s ever known is “master and apprentice”, he deprives himself of what he truly wants. Savage was happy to just follow his brother and support him, but Maul forcibly changed the dynamic. Despite this, he shows Savage far more care than anything Palpatine ever showed him. He cares about Savage, and you can tell that relationship meant a lot to him. When he meets Ezra, he sees a chance to regain that kind of relationship, but since he’s a massive ball of trauma he can’t do it without trying to kill the people Ezra cares about. Maul is his own worst enemy, and seeing him throw away every chance of happiness he ever had is what makes him a tragic character.

It's very rare for even the worst people to consider themselves to be the villain in their own story. They mostly manage to find some justification that excuses their actions to themselves.

Maul's case is not unusual, though pushed to an extreme. Its almost entirely in his head, and Kenobi wasn't a particularly special foe for him in TPM. Meetra's case was highly unusual, and that alone is what caused others to fixate on her. If you think about it, Meetra had all three of the Sith Lords aiming at her for the same reasons, so we could have gotten a love-square if the developers wanted to make it weird.

I never thought of the Shadow Collective as just a form of security, I mean sure it would provide him with support, but I always saw it more as Maul's attempt to regain power and build his own Empire, one that had the potential to rival the Republic and CIS, but of course, Sidious sensed Maul becoming a rival and put the kibosh on that in season 5 and that comic series. Lesson here, never try to become a rival to Sidious, it will not end well.

Phantom Menace isn't necessarily the best when it comes to the writing but the world building it did and the cast of characters was undeniably awesome Of course Qui gon and Darth Maul as well as young Obi wan and Anakin. But also the jedi council The origins of C3po Watto Jar Jar 🧡 (loved him even when everyone hated him, even among my friends) I love Phantom Menace.

True. That's why he wanted to kill Anakin to deprive him of his perfect apprentice. He knew he wasn't strong enough on his own to kill Sidious, but, despite how strong Anakin is as Obi-Wan showed with the Duel on Mustafar he can be beaten if you're smart and you exploited his weakness, he had a chance at killing Anakin. Palpatine is a perfectionist and even if you can't beat him, robbing him of his perfect victory can be just as good if not better as it forces him to see he's not perfect and also taints his victory. Even though Maul himself didn't do it, Obi-Wan beating Anakin on Mustafar did rob him of his perfect victory, and in the end no one fully 100% won the Clone Wars, as even Palpatine suffered a loss the loss of his perfect apprentice that he spent so much time grooming for the role.

The definition of anger as an emotion is the urge to right a wrong. The only true way to process anger is vengeance. That being said, as elevated beings we’re supposed to release our right to vengeance to higher authorities. One of the problems, modern man faces is the processing of anger in a healthy way, given the fact that vengeance and the ability to right a wrong have been taken out of our hands. Fear on the other hand is motivation to fight or flight. It can be used to will yourself forward into a battle to fight during a quest for vengeance, but it is not a motivator for revenge.

Yeah, they made a lot more out of the character, but him somehow living is jarring to me. I would have much rather him kill qui gon, and then get trounced by a darkside infused kenobi. Seeing that he wasnt going to win the fight, he decides to bug out and reevaluate his options. Later palps could have disowned and tried to kill him for his failure, but he squeaks out, and sets out to find his own path. Problem solved. Plus he would carry the knowledge of his failures, and it could color everything after that.

I don’t know where you got the information of Palps was already grooming the Count for Mauls position, but this is literally the first time I’ve ever heard that?!? Out of countless hours worth of lore I’ve watched and listened to! And also all the books, movies and shows I’ve watched or read countless times that are Canon!?! After Maul “died” Palps knew how strong Anakin was but he couldn’t just wait for his so called new appearance to be old enough to help him! And that’s where the Count came in! He was only a filler to help and be the face of the Sith until Anakin was ready! And all of that happened only because Maul “died”! (I can’t think of the name of the book off the top of my head right now but) One of the books talking about this stated that Palps never saw the Count as anything more than a filler. Obviously when you’re lying to someone and you want them to do what you want the last thing you’re going to do is tell them the truth!!! So the Count though he was going to be the heir to the Sith Lord and he lied to his apprentice the same way by telling her that when she was ready she would help him take down the true Sith Lord!

I don't think Maul being the victim of Sidiouses horrific treatment washed his own hands as Maul both never tried to stop, and never showed any remorse for the pain he left in his wake. It's not always as cut and dry as victim - perpetrator, as Maul went ahead and became the perpetrator of many an atrocity. So is he still a victim of Sidious? Absolutely! But no matter how deep Sidious got in his head, Maul was still the one that chose to never stop. He chose to keep sowing death and dread. He chose to continue on that path, rather than identifying he had a choice and could have stepped off it. Though, to note, The dark side of the Force does complicate things due to its very seductive and addictive nature. Still, as shown by those who have redeemed themselves (Force wise), it's not impossible to reject. Maul never even tried, and I think his last moments with Obi-Wan highlight this. At that moment, where Obi-Wan is just sitting by a campfire no weapons drawn immediately upon spotting him, had Maul just, I dunno, humbled himself and asked for help - what are the odds of old Obi-Wan just turning him away?

In Maul's defense, he was raised as an assassin from infancy. So I don't think he ever got a moral compass to fall back on. There was no "good" for him to return to and generally if your developmental years are like that, it's nearly impossible to learn another way of thinking. I don't see why Palpatine would teach him right from wrong. Sure, people do the wrong thing and come back from it all the time, but the vast majority of people are taught basic morality from a very young age, and I strongly doubt Maul received that.

  • @videocrowsnest5251

@@samc9133 True, upbringing is very important. It still does not really override the fact Maul had the ability to choose his own actions and responses. At the end, where he walks into Obi-Wan's calm campsite to pick a fight, it should have been very apparent to Maul that continuing the same song and dance will not result in anything else but the same output. That is to say, self-destruction. I'm no assassin, but perhaps even an assassin's logic could go so far as to understand that in the interest of self-preservation, halting or refraining from certain actions at certain times can have beneficial outcomes to one's self and overall goals. Even if Maul had no idea what words to use, what to even ask for, he could have just communicated as much by simply not becoming hostile. Express in some manner or another that he has no idea what he is doing, but he needs something to stop the cycle of hurt. Rather than choosing to tread old paths and think it would result in any different of an outcome than death and despair.

@@videocrowsnest5251 Oh, I definitely feel that he knew he was self destructing in attacking Obi-Wan again. Star Wars is often a story of redemption - but Maul, to me, stands as an example of the fact that essentially innocent people can be made effectively irredeemable. Maul was taught from a young age that pain was the only way forward. I legitimately don't think he had any way out. I dunno if you've ever read Heinlein's argument about the phrase "juvenile delinquent" in Starship Troopers but it's very compelling! If you wanna read it Google "Heinlein juvenile delinquent excerpt reddit" and the thread titled "please comment on this Heinlein excerpt" - ultimately, I find Palpatine mostly liable for Maul's actions. Not to the extent where Maul should not be punished. But enough. Regardless, appreciate your sharing your viewpoint!

Maul was definitely a villain because his main goals, no matter the reason, were only to gain power and cause pain. He was still a victim of Sidious like most of the galaxy was to some extent, with him being responsible for Maul's loss of half his body and and severe mental scarring, but he was also a very bad man. He had the option of not attracting anyone's attention and instead quietly building up layers of safety like some actual trauma victims sometimes have. He chose the path of trying to cause pain and suffering to other people, and succeeded a lot in it, along with causing the deaths of many people, some of which didn't deserve it. That makes him a villain, even if his reasoning is not as evil as one like Sidious who actively enjoys torturing people, sick freak that he is.

If he “knew he would cause more trouble for the Jedi then he would against himself” then why or earth would he kill Mauls brother (which would have been double the trouble for the Jedi and why would he also take him somewhere where Maul couldn’t do anything to the Jedi and then torture him, until he finally escaped?!? I don't like Maul's story, for the most part. What they did to him, it's alright but not consistent. I think the Maul who showed on phantom menace was so full of anger, and the one on clone wars onwards was so.. afraid. A little man, a shadow of himself. It's tragic, but also downplays him a lot. As an assassin, he was pretty skilled as warrior and that checks out. The problem I believe, is his philosophy. As someone who craves power, it makes sense he wants to get it all back. Fear is relatable, but not admirable. For someone who lived as a shadow a good chunk of his life, he acts quite bold on the Mandalorian conflicts. Almost theatrical. Ignores the power of stealth despite his sith background. In truth, I liked Ventress's story more. Light and dark is fine on a philosophical or even galactic lvl, but what does it mean for the little people? I think that's what Maul's story was missing. He was just a villain meant to fail and make you feel bad about it.
