And our daughter can't understand why I don't want to go back to see where I lived from 63 to 66. She can't understand that there's nothing left of the place I lived in and remember fondly to this day. Darmstadt isn't MY Darmstadt anymore. It's Hell getting old sometimes, but those were good years to have been in Europe. Good memories.

I was a clerk in V Corps Artillery in Darmstadt from 64-65 (after 2 years in Babenhausen, Frankfurt (clerk at Northern Area Stockade), and 2/92nd artillery in Giessen for a couple of stints (clerk in Battalion HQ). Name Jan Clute. PFC

@@janaaj1an889 Good to hear from you Jan. Just reading the names of some of the areas you were stationed in makes me feel like 19 again. Stay strong my brother and keep punching.👍

I was stationed at Cambrai-Fritsch from 1962 to 1965. Unfortunately, the Kaserne has largely been torn down now. the old Headquarters build and the gymnasim buildings were saved. The ground was leveled in 2019 to be rebuilt as housing. Even Lincoln Village was leveled to build new modern housing. My German wife and i have traveled back to Darmstadt many times over the years. The Germany of today is a far cry fro that of the 1960's!

Thanks David for your comments. Many memories and wonderful friends made during that period; American and German. A profound period of my life. Thanks again.

What was your unit and do you remember any of the good GI bars in the downtown area. Good days for sure.

@@25Yanks I was part of the 6901st Security Wing, Air Force which was stationed on Cambrai-fritsch. Our operations sight and antenna field was located out in Griesheim, close to the Stars and Stripes airfield. We did communications intelligence and were operationally subject to the NSA. I am afraid I was not really into the G.I. bar thing, although I did frequent the Klappacherhof Gasthaus in the Karlstrasse. It was just a few blocks toward downtown. Darmstadt. It had a nice mix of Germans and G.I.s. I met a few German students from the school for social workers which was close by. Both were real close to the Orangeriegarten. I started studying German in the night school from the Univ. of Maryland on base and ended up getting my degree in German after getting discharged. I haven't been back since 2016. My son and I went back because my German niece was dying of cancer. My German wife died in 2014. I still talk to my lone German brother-in-law via Skype weekly. When he passes away, my last contact to Darmstadt will also have passed. My other in-laws live mostly in the Wiesbaden area. At age 80, I don't enjoy those long flights anymore. It is a 10 1/2 hour flight from Portland, Oregon.

@@nejdro1 Hi Dave, thanks for your response. Had to laugh, don't want you to think it was all about that good German beer but as you know it helped passed the time on weekends. LOL. I too was fortunate to meet a group of German locals who turned out like brothers during my tour. I'd spend week days working at the 4th Medical Dispensary just outside the front gate of Cambrai-fritsch and on weekends they would immerse us their culture and we would spend time with them and their families. The old Darmstadt is a distant memory but a great memory none the less. Take care Dave and God Bless America.
