In fucking credible game. No horror games have ever come close to scare me as much as Darkwood did. Not Soma, Outlast, Cry Of Fear, Stalker games, F.E.A.R, Amnesia, NONE. Truly a life experience type of game. The lore is amazing, games like these have a strange feeling of realness to them (despite the fact that its completely fictional) and it impacts you in real life. Easily in my all time favorite games. Incredible. Do not let the top down perspective fool you, trust me.

You need to play alien isolation. That's a pretty Damn scary game. Easily as scary as amnesia the dark descent. Darkwood so far I'm on day 7 and it's a treat of a game, so far yeah the nights are pretty tense. Not sure where it fits in terms of scaryness compared to other games. Oh yeah just remembered, if you have any sort of fear of the deep sea, I strongly recommend subnautica. One heck of a scary game.

@@MCshlthead Already played Alien Isolation multiple times as well as Subnautica. Neither of those scared me as much as Darkwood did, not even close at all. Alien Isolation is just stressful at moments. Darkwood made me shiver in fear during desperate hold outs and the fear of the unknown, the simple atmosphere is eerie as hell, played it on hard on my first playthrough. I don't know where you are at in Darkwood, but day 7 is probably quite early. It gets pretty intense at certain parts and the lore itself is quite powerful in terms of fear. To this day, still no other games came remotely close to Darkwood for me.

@@vitalixy3578 SPOILERS . . . . . . . Man oh man....you are absolutely right. I love horror genre in general, and I saw this game somewhere and I was like "hey, this looks cool" . Never seen a trailer, never seen anyone playing it. So I went in completely blind of what's gonna happen. I played this on hard mode as well. I started the game, menu music instantly gave me chills, and already dragged me into the "bliss". Started the game, and there I was. 5min later I was torturing a guy. Ever since I started playing the game, I met all these really fucking creepy stories...The fact that even their names have a fairy tale sound to them, tells a lot for the game...The chicken lady, Wolf, Musician, Piotrek, Snail, Mushroom lady, Sow and so many others... Made me fear the absence of the woods. I wasn't scared cause of the mood or the music. I was completely scared by the existence that I am stuck in this devilish woods....Knowing nothing. Only total truth I had, was that I had to get out.

This game with all its components (atmosphere, music, visuals) manages to nail so many things right to capture this heavy, cold and harsh soviet fairytale. The words "fever dream" seems more appropriate to describe it. In the end it's cause quite the opposite effect on me (mb because im slavic myself). Decaying villages, that drowning in time and grass, people, which live out their last days in them. It's too real even without surrounding forest. It brings not saddness or depression, but bittersweet melancholy, atleast for me. It's feels so dear and warm, like part of your soul, that's you never knew was there. And the game awoke those feelings and experiences. The ambience in the "road to home" makes me tear up, it's feels so nostalgic somehow. Didn't know that i will find one of my favorite games so far in my life. Im really glad that there are people in this industry who main goal still is expression. It gives me hope and inspires me. Thank you Acid Wizard!

Damn, know this feeling, this wet and bitter slavic toska. When i started reading this comment, i thought that the soundtrack raises in me strange longing for home, despite being at home, yearning for and missing something i never truly had. Emotion that makes you cry, but you don't want to get rid of it. And then, after finishing reading your comment, i understood that i'm not alone.

Darkwood helped me respect my own polish blood, something I knew very little of except its presence. Than I researched the wonderful accomplishments of the polish people, and realized we created the start of Nuclear science, chemo therapy, and are known for having exceptionally strong or beautiful untainted people. At the same time, Russian and German cultures wouldn't be themselves without Polish influence.

Darkwood is one of those artistic works which leave something inside you after you get finished of them, something might be good, bad, strange, or beautiful. Darkwood is not transient, it stays with you and will lie in your memory for a long time, you will not forget the main theme music, the sounds of wind and wooden doors, the screams of Black Chompers, and the conversations with the wolf. Darkwood is not a video game but an experience, an excellent experience which has the ability to occupy special parts of your soul and mind.

I agree with another comment I read here; Darkwood is an experience, not just a survival horror game. The music, the graphics, its line-of-sight mechanics, the creatures and descriptions... they all mesh together to make something that is bigger than its parts. The crafting system is also one of the few I actually enjoyed using.

The Doctor, fearing the revenge of a man dressed in a scarecrow costume, disappeared deep into the wilderness. The unfathomable visions of daughter's disappearance that haunted him eventually drove the local physician to the edge of insanity. In the end, however, they became obvious transmissions of electricity signals... and the forest became his new home. - Bliss ending transcript for Doctor.

Darkwood music has this perfect mix of unsettling-suspense and comforting-calm that I find it hard to explain. I just think of this overcast day walking down a dirt path coming back from the forest. The sounds of birds chirping and leaves rustling can leave one with a feeling of serenity, sometimes even that of a trance. You're cold, weak and hungry, dirty due to being exposed to the elements, but you finally found a path. On this path you notice several dilapidated stone cottages abandoned in times past. The thoughts emerge of how the families once lived in these uninhabited structures. Many filled with love, some with despair. For what reason were they abandoned? Did the residents move on to something better, or perhaps were they forced out against their will? Did they succumb to natural causes? It's interesting to imagine. Somehow the air of the forest is peaceful yet menacing and heavy as you realize you have been lost for hours, maybe it could be days, but at least you found a path that looks trekked by someone, or perhaps cleared by *something*. Soon you become delirious from exhaustion as you havent brought enough food to last and the forest starts to twist and take shape of your most grotesque fears. You then pass out and awaken to find yourself sleeping in the middle of a field-- the sky is bright and the sun shining, and while you feel the warmth kiss your skin, there is a shiver--- You look around and see robed figures before blinking to emerge in darkness. Cold, tired, and hungry, you feel the gaze of the trees, and whatever lie beyond. Do you remember entering the forest?

The only bad thing about Darkwood is that it's hard for youtubers to translate the horror since it's fundamentally tied to the act of controlling your character itself, so the only real way to embrace the full horror is to play it yourself... which kinda defeats the whole purpose of finding a youtuber playing it to cower behind haha

I love this game. On my first play through it took my about 56 in-game days to complete because I didn't want to fight another red chomper with the limited resources I had. I was finally brave enough to go explore the unknown a bit farther and found much more that I had hoped for, with that, my base was overstocked with so many resources and I had to take multiple journeys through the perilous woods to obtain all the items to satisfy my greed. The soundtrack was amazing. I would mistake some of the sounds in the game for a sound in real life.

Is it weird that I find this soundtrack oddly comforting? Hahaha, I certainly didn't find the game oddly comforting. Scariest thing I've played. In terms of dread and oppression, there's nothing better. In terms of stress and panic... my god, you have to just put this down sometimes and let your defense mechanisms rest. Jump scare is minimal. And the psychological warfare... Polish horror really knows what the fuck it's doing. Living under the dark oppressive Soviet Union must really did a number on the psyche of their cultural zeitgeist.
