I have this messer it is the most clumsy and uncomfortable blade I have its like an axe with an extremely awkward handle. Zero distal taper. Pretty mush unsharpened even though i ordered it sharp. Also the tip is turned blue from getting to hot with the grinder. There is no way they didn't see that before they decided to send it. My first and last dark sword armory sword

I went for a landsknecht and it is 20 times better. Maybe 100

Given that you could get a Landsknecht Emporium or Krieger Historical for about the same price, it’s a pass for me. Thanks for the review, though!

Good vid and assesment. The angle of the pommel looks weird, as if the neither handle nor pommel know what the other is doing. I think if they realigned them it would go a long way to make it more presentable.

Excellent overview and observations as usual Matthew. Fully agree with your assessments here. A few points about messer construction to just reinforce what you were saying, messer cross guards are fitted the opposite of something like and arming sword: instead of being slid up from the tang, they are fitted down over the blade (perhaps due to original messer styles having their integral pommel ends too thick to transit the opening). So they require the nagel to secure them in place in part as they are not hammered in via the rest of the grip and pommel components. Also, while rare, this wider type of nagel shield is known. It is usually seen on very very big messer (thing about how the Albion Knecht starts to flare out a bit). One of the wider ones I know would be the beautiful großes Kriegsmesser (A123) in Kunsthistorisches Museum Wein. Still these are starting to look a bit more like sail guards, and coupled with the blade type, and hilt design this strikes me as more of the love child between a Dussack and a Messer.

A pommel, a cross guard that is not slid down the blade, a welded on nagel... This is a sword that masquerades as a messer. Curious. It is disputed but the dominant theory for why messers like that existed in the first place is that regular village blacksmiths who knew how to make kitchen knives but didn't know how to make proper swords just made sword sized knives when they wanted to make a weapon. So that we now have a sword manufacturer making a messer like they make swords because they apparently don't know how to make knives is quite ironic.

Thanks for the review Matt. DSA has *always* been way overpriced for mediocre blades, and is almost impossible to resell because of the meh’ quality that collectors recognize.

I did a quick look on ebay, it lookks like they sell but for 20-50% off the retail - www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_dcat=43339&_fsrp=1&rt=nc&_from=R40&_nkw=darksword+armory&_sacat=0&LH_Sold=1 I don't think the blades or designs are bad though, they seem durable and a little different. They just need a little tweaking. If they had the balance that say the LK Chen blades do in their euro blades, I think people would have more to enjoy.

@@Matthew_Jensen Agreed, but I think DSA is is there own worst enemy, because the only variation in price is if it’s like a factory second, and they’ve always stuck to their original designs without so much as a tweak here or there. Other well established manufacturers, and some newer ones, are willing to create a “Gen 2” or some such effort to keep customers from wandering off towards other sellers that are more willing to release modern takes on historical or fantasy swords. Long comment short, I think they’re just too set in their ways to acquiesce to customer requests (or reviews).

That handle is really quite bad for 500-600 price to me. It looks like a 200 dollar sword to me because of the handle. The blade finish is also quite unappealing. Finishing to a finer grit and more uniformity would be nice for that money. Really the whole sword looks like a 250 dollar ebay special to me

They need someone to join the company as a new co-owner or something. Not just to help their business but as a business owner I can see they need new leadership for a complete overhall of their products.

Friends do not let friends buy from darksword armory. I've learned that you gotta do your research before buying swords that are not from the higher end companies. Darksword stuff should be sold for 200-300 srs

If anything I think this video proves that they don't give you any special treatment when it comes to sending you swords to review... Because if they hand selected this as a special example to send you, I'd hate to see what the regular production ones look like 😂

I realy like the blade shape, but that handle is bad, far too skinny and the pommel is hot garbage. The sword reminds me of a Benny Hill skitt, where he would approach a seemingly attractive blonde and when she would turn around she would be 75 years old, missing teeth, and cross eyed 😂.
