Darkglass cab 4x10 vs MESA Powerhouse 4x12
Музыка
Darkglass recently released new bass cab - DG410C.
I've give it a try and compared it with my current setup - MESA Powerhouse 4x12
-- GEAR --
Bass: Dingwall combustion NG2
Head: Darkglass Microtubes 900
Cab1: Darkglass 4x10
Cab2: MESA Powerhouse 4x12
Mic1: Soundking ED011
Mic2: RODE NT2-A
-- NOTES --
For live playing with the band, I was more satisfied with MESA, however during recording this video, I liked how Darkglass sounded in the mix. Darkglass definitely made exceptional bass cab. Solid build and solid sound.
I've recorded finger, pick and slap so you can hear all playing styles. There is no EQ at all, these are raw recordings only with microphones. I used Radial PRORMP for reamping so you can hear exactly same take through different cabs.

both sound great, the Mesa sounds like it would cut through a mix better though, more aggressive top
It would be cool to see the darkglass vs Ampeg 810e or 410HE considering they are probably the most commonly played cabs in rock and metal
Darkglass sounds like it's got a lot more low mid and mid response, being very strong around 120-300Hz. The Mesa is a heavier hitter in lower frequencies, and that makes the horn a more dominant overtone. My personal taste is for the Darkglass, as it would find that nice ground in between the kick and guitars. Especially with my Warwick Thumb, it would really growl. I'm sold.

it did seem like the Darkglass had beefier low end. I have used a darkglass 8x10 and it produced some deep deep low end at loud volumes really nice unlike anything ive played through.

@@boag3144 I have try my DG210N cab compare to a 410 and 115 Hartke, the HArtke was so bad in comparison. The only thing I hate on those darkglass is the tolex is very week
Both sound great and each cab serves its purpose.respectively. Keep in mind that he's comparing 10'' 's to 12'' 's ,which happen to respond differently!

wow no shit, it's in the title of the fucking video
Thanks! Nice comparation
I appreciate the work you put into this comparison but I find it a little bit pointless due to your methodology. You're changing EQ settings when switching cabs and you don't provide post-EQ DI signal for reference. My suggestion for future recording - if you choose to do more comparisons like this - is to record post-EQ line out and then record miked cabs without changing any settings in between the takes. Then you can actually compare which cab reproduces the sound of your rig better by comparing recorded cabs to recorded line out.
I liked the sound of the darkglass better. Mesa sounds good too but it accentuates the high frequencies and that I don't like.
Darkglass has change the game , this 4x10 make the tone really deeper and bright shit im really want this
Regardless of the cab, the fingerstyle attack sounds great! How do you have your bass set up? Are the strings very low or are you just smacking them very hard? Any other special techniques? Or is it just the Dingwall?
Mesa 4x12 has way more bottom end than the darkglass cab. Both sound really good with that Dingwall bass.
What pickup selection were you using for this? Love the video.
Seems to me like the Mesa handle the mid/high mid a little less well than the darkglass but had a little more edge on the lower end.
Sounds great, but changing settings isn't quit a fair comparison, is it? (mind the 'bass-eq' settings)
Super glad I saw this comparison. I'd go with the darkglass, it just sounds better for heavy stuff imo. The Mesa is too trebly
They both sound killer and they both have a ton of low end punch but when you hit that open E string really hard with the pic the 4 x 12” from Mesa sounded amazing. I don’t play with too much distortion and I’ve been playing through 10” speakers in all different cabinet configurations for years now but in my opinion the 12”s handle the distortion and saturation from the overdrive a little better without losing much low end presence making the overall tone musical. Maybe that’s why they’re so popular in the guitar community. I’m going to grab a couple of 1x12” cabs or a 2x12” soon and there’s a lot of great choices on the market right now so I’m having trouble narrowing it down. I love Mesa and I used a lot of their big road worthy cabs back in the 90’s like the 1516’s and 2x15’s Diesel cabs but they’re mighty proud to stamp a huge price tag on their gear so I know there has to be a lot of competition for that kind of a ransom lol. If anyone has any suggestions or positive feedback from their 12” cabs please let me know. Best 1x12” or 2x12” bass cabs on the market for 2020? 🙏🏼✌️

Darkglass 212 is great if you use distortion. They use a special crossover in their cab to enhance distortion. But you can look at Gallien Krueger too or Mesa they are all great.

@@francoishtzl157 I didn’t know that they have a crossover for the drivers. I assumed it was just an attenuator for the tweeter. Great info and I will have to give them a serious look!

@@ethanlancaster76 Oh no, on the back you have the tweeter volume. But in the cab there is a circuit that enhance harmonic and distortion but you can't tweak that. It is just there.
Nice sound. If I had a 4x12 at 4ohms that be the only can I’d need. For now stick with a Celestion loaded 15” and hopefully another lightweight 4x8 celestion cab.
Darkglass 😮
hello.could you tell me what pedal you are using.thanks
Great video. Literally the comparison im looking at. Gotta say, your low end is super tight and i love it! How do you get such tight low end?

Darkglass Microtubes 900. By FAR the best amp to buy for that tight low-end sound.

Hey man. Just curious. Have you ever played/tried a Mesa 4x10 Powerhouse Cab?
Man that 412 cuts thru
I’m feeling everything about this video
Great comparison! Do you have any plan to sell both cab impulse response?

Mesa sounds a bit thin compared to the Darkglass in my opinion ?
@tapchan
5 жыл бұрын
Take a look at his EQ. He rolled back the Bass knob while playing through Mesa. No wonder it sounds "thin" in comparison although I believe "less muddy" is a better description in this particular case :-)
Why did you change all the tone settings in between comparisons? Not really a fair comp tbh. Only thing that should have changed was maybe master volume to make them the same DB
What's the point of comparison when Bass knob on Microtubes is setup to like 6/10 when using DG and 3/10 for MESA. Looks a bit fishy to me
That mesa cab shit on the DG cab. The DG sounds like it had a blanket over it.
Is there a way to get the highs from the darkglass cab and the lows from the mesa lol.

the mesa one may be better, but it is not a fair comparison as soon as the same settings are not applied for both cabinets...

Great sounding amp, Mesa cab killing it
MESA for sure! It would sit in a mix better based on the current settings, that Darkglass isn't a bad cab at all either though! No wrong choices here IMO.
I think the Mesa, more articulation and has plenty of woof.
Mesa...of course. Big Speakers for great Bass Sound! ....for ever!

12" have less bass than the 10" cause the bass reflex on 10" works better but 12" have more midrange And i see that the Darkglass is 1180 dollars but mesa is more expansive like 1700$
Mesa has it, more depth and balls Glad I own that 4x12 vintage 1000w 4 ohm monster .
I much prefer the Darkglass setup!
Mesa has nice mid scoop.
New video title: "Why you should own a Darkglass Cab" (Especially if you've got a DG Amp + Dingwall Bass). For me the DG is waaaay better in the lower ends. Whereas Mesa is too clear and metallic in the higher areas. But I think it's a matter of taste and music you're playing at least.
The Darkglasscab sounds 100# better
I prefer the Mesa, I can hear the string. The Darkglass sounds cluttered to me.

in other words you like the crisp punchy tones of the Mesa instead of the more controlled (somehow muffled-ish) DG? lol Same thoughts, but really it comes down to preference. Tbh, none was better than the other.
MESA all the way! So articulate, clear, and growling. Great video and great playing! Thanks for posting!
Man split the signal use the 4x12 and in another put the guitar amp with 4x12 marshall or try the orange cab
4x12
Why would you change the settings?!? Defeats the whole purpose 🤷♂️
MESA, So much nicer growl
Mesa takes Darkglass to take a ride...

It is a pretty unfair comparison, 4x12 vs 4x10. A 6x10 vs 4x12 would be more fair.

@@As5Hat Have to disagree, the older version sounds best but is very heavy. I use the old version in the studio, the new cabs are light weight and still sound great. I have both and love both
Mesa for sure
4x10 all the way.
Not a bad sounding amp nothing touches my ampeg v4b
mesa wins again
Mesa all the way
Lose the overdrive
what is this trash?!? how can you compare 10 inch cones against 12" ??? Not only that you are using different settings on your amp. Yea the Mesa sounds better but you EQ'd it that way. Booo rahhh
