The outro can bring me to tears. At 3:56 in this video the undercurrent synth kicks in and then at 4:24 the high pitched synths take over and a wave of goosebumps rush over me. Beyond beautiful. It’s total nirvana.

Yeah, there’s a lot going on lyrically in this song. You’d really have to be deep into Bowie to get all the references. “Hitting an all time Low.” Low is his 1977 album that’s considered one of his greatest. Worth a listen. The Ashes to Ashes Video is worth viewing. Bowie was an early pioneer of the video age. He made an art of it. Major Tom makes one final appearance in his final album Blackstar. He’s not mentioned in the lyrics but makes his appearance in the video for the title track. He was important enough to Bowie for him to be included in what Bowie knew to be his finale.

Yes and if you noticed Blackstar ends in a similar if not the same digital tones as Space Oddity --- Must watch the official video -- full of Bowie easter eggs --- It will take me years to figure them out -- Oh and listen to Blackstar backwards -- its so interesting --- it sounds very similar to the forward version

Ashes to Ashes is about heroin. So is Space Oddity. “Hitting an all time low” isn’t a reference to his album. It’s about his addiction. The most powerful lyric in the song is “Want an axe to break the ice. Wanna come down right now.” Major Tom=heroin. Not a sci-fi character.

@@jacknone1564I do believe you are correct...but his album 'Low" is my favorite although his five albums from 1976-80 are for me his greatest run of experimental music....but his overall catalogue is out of this world

It's partly a continuation of the story of Major Tom but, as David Bowie WAS Major Tom, it's also a comment on Bowie's drug addictions. Luckily, by the time he wrote this, he had overcome the worst of his addictions. :)

YES! Welcome for the Bowie galaxy of music. I’m so very thankful I was able to see him live on his last tour in 2004. The view from 12 rh row center was a dream of all dreams! Check out these Bowie tracks: “I’m Afraid of Americans” - David Bowie (ft. Trent Reznor) “Scary Monsters (and super freaks)” “Time” “Rock n’ Roll Suicide “ “Moonage Daydream” “New Killer Star” “Pablo Picasso” “Right” *this track features a very young Luther Vandross singing backup vocals. “Fashion” “Little Wonder” “Black star”, “Lazarus “ and “I Can’t Give Everything Away” (these last 3 are from David’s final album released just 2 days before he left this planet. *cool factiod: Both Freddie Mercury & David Bowie had constellations named for them after they passed by NASA. 💫💫💫💫💫💫 * Diggin your channel, man!

Some of David's strongest work here, and that's saying a lot. One thing that makes this song interesting musically is the choruses (and intro and outro). He wrote them using a three chord progression or pattern. VERY rarely do writers use less than 4 chords in a progression. Some use many more. Another interesting thing is the verses are in a major tonality and the 3 chord choruses are minor. Lends a very bleak, melancholistic atmosphere. Bowie plays many instruments, guitar, piano/keys, sax, etc. Knew what he was doing. Try the original Cat People (Putting out fire) with Stevie Ray Vaughn shredding, off Let's Dance. A smoker. Keep up the good work Pope.

My favorite Bowie album, though I will admit that is largely because he collaborated heavily with Robert Fripp of King Crimson on this album. This is one of the relatively few songs on the album where Fripp is not also playing guitar. But it was the perfect "sequel" song to "Space Oddity". And as for "Scary Monster (Super Freaks)? You might really dig doing "Fashion" off this album. Funky as f*** and Fripp does things with a guitar that are outlawed somewhere, I'm sure. Another great Bowie album is "Stage", a LIVE album. Nice things about live albums? They show it isn't all studio magic. His guitarist on "Stage" is Adrian Belew. Belew has played with Frank Zappa, King Crimson, AND David Bowie. Blessings.

Yeah, Bowie was free of his cocaine habit by the time this album was laid down. Although Major Tom seemed to die in space in Bowie's "Space Oddity", Peter Schilling later scored a pop hit ("Major Tom") a few years after this which sort of gives Major T a link to surviving the space flight. Of course, it is all allegorical, and Bowie divorced his first wife Angela while this album was being written and recorded (I always thought that Angela was the inspiration for "Scary Monsters"), so there was a whole chapter of Bowie's life and career being wrapped up at the time.

Okay, back again with my man POPE. I have had my own problems with semi-crazed "followers" and no, I am not going there with POPE. My respect and admiration starts and ends with Comments after hearing POPE share his thoughts. I am just grateful to see future brilliance in action. You absolutely can NOT go wrong watching POPE in action. Please take it just to that limit. Give this young man space and time. David Bowie himself famously said, "I don't know where I am going, but I can promise you, it won't be boring."
