DARK History of the Death Eaters (Est. 1938) - Harry Potter Explained

Ойын-сауық

Where did the Death Eaters come from? What name did they operate under originally? How did their hierarchy work? And where did the Dark Mark come from? For answers to these questions and more check out today's video of Harry Potter Theory.
Today we’re going to be discussing the history of Voldemort’s faithful servants - the Death Eaters. Specifically- we’ll be looking at their founder, how they formed, what name they ORIGINALLY operated under, how you can become a death eater, why some members WEREN’T pure-bloods, their role in both wizarding wars, and what happened to the Death Eaters AFTER the second wizarding war had ended.
Let’s get in to it.
It all started with a young orphan boy by the name of Tom Riddle who began attending Hogwarts School in 1938. Though on the outside Riddle appeared to be a normal young man, deep down he had an unimaginable number of demons- demons that haunted him every single day of his life. Why? Well, Tom didn’t exactly have a normal chi*ldhood- he was abandoned by his witch mother Merope Gaunt at the steps of Wool’s Orphanage right at the time of his birth.
Because Tom Riddle Jr never had a mother or father figure- he also never had any concept of love, or family. Like many powerful, evil, and enigmatic figures of history - Riddle had a rough start to his life- and this paved the way for the dark path that he was destined to follow. But, when Riddle eventually began to act on his dark nature, and began pursuing dark endeavours- he wasn’t alone, and he was able to bring many other dark witches and wizards along for the ride.

Plus I don’t know if after being brought back from the brink of death by that potion and the addition of horcruxes would make him potentially sterile and unable to produce a child. He never cared about anyone besides himself. I doubt he would want a child to achieve immortality. He cared only about his own self preservation and his soul. He’d much rather kill a child (ie Harry Potter) than risk his own life and immortality being put at risk. How to say you don't read without saying that you don't read. I love HP dearly, it ignited my love for reading when my stepfather wouldn't let me see the first movie in theaters until I'd read the book. I've read them countless times, I went to midnight releases for both movies and books several times. But... there are far greater authors than Rowling, who have created far more expansive worlds with far more depth and detail than the Wizarding World. Harry Potter is fairly simple and even short when it comes to the world of great sci-fi/fantasy book series. You should look into reading some, if you appreciate HP this much you will be astonished at the world's you'll find.

@@Negentropy369disagree with this take, which comes across as belittling, though you may not have intended it. I am one such person who reads often and many books, from classics to current science fiction, and writers of fantasy and science fiction study HP along with many other excellent books because of how uniquely skilled Rowling was with working fluidly with stimulus and response as well as scene and sequel to tell a very entrancing story that keeps readers locked into the world. Yes, her world building is on the simpler side, more along the lines of C.S. Lewis’ Narnia series, which she openly talks about as a favorite series, but simple isn’t lesser when it is utilized with grace, power and effect. There is enough room in this world to love writers such as Herbert, with his incredible politics, intelligent characters, world building, and realistic planetary economies, or Dostoevsky for his delve into physiology and human goodness and depravity and also love Rowling’s skilled use of selective and charming world building and beloved characters. As academics, it is easy to dismiss the popular and the modern as unworthy of our notice or to not study them deeply enough to recognize what the pages and structure of their worlds have to teach us. Even easier to dismiss the opinions of those who love these works passionately and without reserve. But if we exclude such books from our consideration, and ignore the things that people love and why they love them, we will make the same mistake those who dismissed the modernists, and thought only the classics worthy of study, made during their time, and many before that.

Tolkien, Ray Bradbury, and Stephen King having a long lasting impact... We'll see where she ends up on the list (with future works added). But as it stands she's... Fine. Engrossing, enjoyable, re-readable. Absolutely... But her body of work in the genre is limited.

This is only speculation, though backed up by Voldemort's graveyard speech: I think that, after his return and prior to the Battle Of Hogwarts, Voldemort demanded that any who came aboard with him make complex public declarations of loyalty, both to unnerve the general populace and to ensure, in the off-chance of another retrenchment or temporary retreat, that no one serving him was able to ever again claim Imperius or simple fear-recruitment. This loyalty mechanism of his made the gathering of the remaining followers a clean sweep. I see the Malfoys and perhaps the Zabinis turning state's evidence on Death Eater and followers' hideaways, this to protect their sons.

Voldemort, this evil psychopathic genius, who has never shown anyone even the slightest bit of remorse or affection (I don’t count Bella, he didn’t love her, he used her to create a Slytherin heir) - but then he never seems to try and go after Slughorn, even though you’d think he’d be top of the kill list as the only person who knows Tom asked about horcruxes. Idk, I feel like JK kinda just forgot about this plot point? Or maybe Slughorn was genuinely just incredible at evading capture?!

I always considered the receiving the dark mark to be akin to the Mafia's recruitment process, in effect, Voldemort is the Boss, and those with the dark mark are made mebers of the family, with everyone else simply being an associate until they're proven (theres also a parallel between the death eaters Pure blood obsession, and the rule that only Italians and sciciliams could be made men). You could even hand wave the fact that voldemort was an old man by the time he has big enough army to be effective with the idea that the 'books were closed' much in the same way the mafia only allowed new members to join every 20 years or so. (some mafia associates could go most of their lives without becoming members just because they were passed over on an occasion that the books were open)

The Knights of Walpurgis calling themselves "knights" while causing terror and mayhem in their pursuit for racial purity reminds me of the Knights of the White Camelia, an early form of the Ku Klux Klan. They were founded in 1867 and their goal after the Civil War was to resist the social and political changes for peoples of color in the South, which they did through violent lynchings and terrorist attacks. And just like the Death Eaters they were made up of men who came from humble roots but also had members from more affluent backgrounds such as doctors, lawyers, politicians and wealthy folks. What's also interesting is that the Knights of Camelia only lasted for a few years as they disbanded in 1870, while many of its members would go on to join the more prominent KKK, similarly the members of the Knights of Walpurgis made up an early nucleus of what would become the Death Eaters.

It's entirely unethical and unfair that those that have can basically get off scot-free and those that don't have that to sit in jail even for a minor crime such as theft I've seen murderers get slaps on the wrist because their family has a lot of money and judges are corrupt and the whole system seems to be corrupt because corrupt people are leaving this country and other countries we're not special. I would hardly term his mother's death in child-bed "abandonment". She died - not an uncommon occurrence in either world in the 1920s, nor even in this day and age. It may have been that had she remained in the wizarding world she may have been saved, but this is open to speculation. After all, there are many medical causes for a woman dying in child-bed, and to my knowledge Rowling does not specify exactly what killed her. It is an unfortunate, but not completely uncommon, circumstance in either world.

you present an interesting theory but i believe there is one thing that throws a wrench into your theory. you mentioned how Voldemort was a powerful wizard who could possibly read whether someone was lying or was loyal. normally, i would agree but we learn that in the deathly hollows snape had infiltrated the death eaters to act as a double agent for dumbledore in exchange for keeping lily safe

Voldemort could read people's minds and see what their intentions were. He was hailed as one of if not the strongest legillimen in the wizard world. Snape was special, as he was one of the best occlumens if not the best in the world. That's why he alone helped train harry in occlumency. And the only reason he was able to deceive voldemort.

What happened to the Dark Marks after Voldemort’s permanent death? Did they remain on the Death Eater’s arm like a tattoo? Or did they fade away and disappear like the curse Bellatrix cast into the sky upon Dumbledore’s death after the staff and students cast a light into it? I’m referring to what happened in the movie as I can’t remember exactly what happened in the book and I don’t remember where it is in my closet.

My understanding is the energy that feeds the spell. Some use natural sources while others use the castor's. So if the casting spell requires the castor's energy it would be how it could eventually expire. If the spell is fed off natural source then it would remain till removed either by the castor or another who can overpower it.

  • @TheFrecklish

In the book, the dark mark is a magical branding/scar not a tattoo. It’s red in colour but turns black when it burns. Rowling has said they faded to proper scars when Voldy died. In the movies they made them magical tattoos and they’re grey/black. I assume they either disappeared when Voldy died or became scars also.

I never vilified Cho...i know how trauma distorts how a person handles interactions. And Harry....well, Harry is rather immature in dealing with girls, lacks any experience, and is blindsided often but the REASONS behind a girl's actions and/or words. Plus, he's affection deprived and seems to have huge issues with reacting properly. When I was a teen boy, i HATED girls crying, but i was ok letting them cry on my shoulder, giving them a pat on the arm, or a hug...depending how brave I felt. But, I had loving parents. However, there's no way Cho could understand Harry's limitations in that area. And, there's no miraculous insight that Harry could possess in time for either to salvage their "almost" relationship. It was always doomed. Though, i honestly think if a GUY wrote Harry Potter, Harry would have done a bit ... Better. 😄

I wouldn’t say friends. The Malfoy family lived on, and basically the main difference was that their family name was tarnished forever. Lucius avoided further punishment, and Draco married a muggle which his parents hated. Harry and Draco were never meant to be friends but there was more of a mutual understanding after the fact.

Because he and his family defected from the Death Eaters they were pardoned for their crimes after Voldemort's final defeat and did not serve a stint in Akhaban. Plus i suspect Lucius also help to turn in other DE.
