I disagree wholeheartedly, this is one of my favorite black metal albums of all time. No joke. As I ascend is a god damn black metal masterpiece, and so is Unchain my soul, Beast above man, and the entirety of the album.

Dunn got it wrong here, because if you listen the other DF albums, this sounds great, excellent production. And if thats not evolution i dont know what is. And Unchain My soul is as pop black metal, as it can get, is really easy listening and its a fucking great track

I disagree, this album definitely delivered! I'm surprised he didn't mention 'nail them to the cross'--it's so fucking fast and unrelenting, it's unreal drumming and the riffage is sweet.

Nail them to the cross is my fav track of the album. The chorus is very melodic in a sense and its a very nice track to sing along to :D

This album was one of their best!!

as an iranian, its pretty cool that lord ahriman named himself after the persian satan. in old ancient persian religion (Zoroastrianism), god was called ahura mazda or ormazd, and the one representing the devil was called ahriman. ay keep rockin sam

I haven't really even been into black metal. never really liked anything seriously. but got to say, this record is pretty good.

Dark Funeral is one of my favourites. Black metal with great melodies, those tremolo picking leads they have always been amazing at it. Really looking forward to this one.

I liked Unchain My Soul. Have you thought of doing reviews for older albums, maybe ones you thought were overlooked?

Album is brilliant. I like that they are consistent at what they do and are damn good at it.

I would personally give the album a 7.7/10 review. To me it's a fantastic album.

Hearing the melodies and hearing how dark and haunting they are it’s 2021 and I just bought this record and bought everything that goes with it and I’m in love dark melodic darkness I love it

Temple of Ahriman was my favorite Track. All around a good track with different Black Metal Vocal melodies in it.

I might have to pick it up.

I feel like this band just keeps remaking their first record. There's a lot more interesting black metal happening right now.

not even a word about necrolord magnificent's artwork or daniel b as a producer and what about "as i ascend"?etc come on we need reviews less rushed! and this album is a bit different then the past there is more a dissection feel and this new one kills by the way

This is his best review. From the most part I find this reviewer to just kind of conform to whatever most metal fans want to here, but here he is ok to admit this is just ok, and he’s totally spot on.

if your going to go with an odd number of x/4 you probably shouldnt gove half skulls.... how do i calculate that easily? its like 62.5/100? stick to full skull ratings or adopt a 5 or 10 skull scale plz.

"Eternal Eclipse", is by far the best song. This is by far the best metal album of 2016 Sam no butts about it Sammy. Because unlike your favorite bands, this has no full on melodies.

please review Arcana 13 - Danza Macabre. Truly awesome Italian Doom Metal with heavy influences of classic Italian horror, including a solid cover of Goblin's Suspiria!

The new vocalist fucking slays! Glad i preordered the limited (200 copies) red vinyl. Gotta say it is still alot like their old stuff but one things for sure, they upped the atmospherical aspect of their music. I also gotta say that you can hear alot of influence from Mayhem's De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas on this album, which is fucking great!

Seriously, come on Dunn, you're expecting more "experimentation" on a DF record? This is the wrong band. Every album sounds basically the same, which can be a good thing if you're really a fan of the band. And complaining about "only one original member" left? Well, Ahriman has been the only original member since 1997 if I recall it correctly. Have a nice day.

Jamie Laszlo Haha, oh god. I was drunk when I wrote this, but now when I look what I wrote it seems my complains were legit anyway. That being said, it's really no big deal at all, but I see that my post looks a bit pissed off. Dunn's metal series has some faults here and there but I have been commenting on a handful of them which means that I watch them, which in turn is proof that they are fairly enjoyable.

I really liked it. Great album imo. And I was curious about the new vocalist - I didn't known him before - but luckily he is a great replacement for Broberg.

The new vocalist sorta sounds like Jon Nödtveidt of Dissection (Somberlain-era).

Much better than their previous release, I like it.

I think this is the best album they've put out, better than all their other records combined.

Going to see these fuckers in concert in a month. Ive liked dark Funeral for a long time, you just got to know what to expect. After a few songs, it gets repetitive, almost like listening to the same 2 songs over and over. That being said, their sound is phenomenal and the drums are incredible. I find myself listening to 3-4 songs and moving on to another artist but I come back to it all the time. A few timeless tracks on this album. unchain my soul really is pretty unique for Dark Funeral. Nail them to the cross will be a black metal classic for years to come.

Unchain my soul, nail them to the cross and the title track are S tier black metal songs in my opinion. This album is an 8/10…..on a bad day

I think this is their best album. I like most of their material. Album reviews are kind of silly imo. I have mad respect for Lord Ahriman and have learned alot from him from his guitar writing and playing style.

In my opinion this is their most varied album and the best they have delivered since the debut. Plus, the title track is one of their strongest songs ever. It was the first DF album I bought since Vobiscum Satanas because the albums in between were too one-dimensional in my opinion.

Totally fucking agree, love Dark Funeral, but was not impressed by this album, I was more impressed by Ragnarok's Psychopathology.

Black metal in general isn't really about experimentation is it? Do we want an experimental album from Dark Funeral, which is a band known for their fast and hammering sound? If you want experimentation you should find a newer band that haven't been around for as long as Dark Funeral and has an established sound as they do.

I like your reviews for the most part. though not to keen on your grading system, better to do a x/5 or x/10 system.

I disagree with the 2 1/2 skulls-It Doesn't matter that Lord Ahriman is the only original member-the fuckin album reignz! Dark Funeral does have their 'sound/feel' that is all theirs-like most bands that have been together for a while. I to be honest was expecting a little weaker release because Lord Ahriman has found love-which is kool-but I thought it might blind his judgement-not at all. the album is okay and nothing special, just 3 tracks work for me. They also had a bad live performance in Vienna i hope it was the sound technican....for me the best BM album is Taake - Doedskvad kzread.info/dash/bejne/p2SplsehaL3Rh7w.html Taake playing experimental and sounds so awesome live

Why would you expect experimentation from Dark Funeral? They are the AC/DC of black metal in that sense.

Disagree with this review. Yes the album had been hyped up ad nauseum prior to it's release and I was convinced it wouldn't be able to live up to it; wrong! Yes it blasts like a motherfucker, it's Dark fucking Funeral, but it's not monotonous in any way, shape or form. They mix up the tempos enough for it not to sound to become boring and bleed out as one track with only slight variations in their signature apocalyptic black metal sound, defining song from song. Slower tracks like As I Ascend and Temple Of Ahriman weren't mentioned and that keeps things interesting. None of them reach the lofty heights that My Funeral did, but they're good nonetheless.

If you want experimentation listen to extreme metal bands or sub- genre bands in true black metal you will not find that black metal is suppose to sound like black metal need to have a real black metal fan to review this stuff

Dark Funeral died creatively when Parland left (and now he's even dead since years back). Everything after that is just Ahriman trying to do the same riffs but not doing it AS good, at all. No disrespect, there's way worse music out there.

What are you talking about Dude! what kind of experimentation did you expect from Black Metal? Here is no place for such thing. It should sound raw and primitive without any unwanted "superefects"! It must stay primitive! If Black Metal does not fit in your musiciall guest, you should never give opinion, or any verdict about it... because you are laic in BM and your opinion is invalid... Now go, close yourself in room, and listen to Iron Maiden or Slayer.

While you have a point, Black Metal should never stop evolving either. BM was created as a counter thing when Death Metal went stale. Therefore BM itself shoudl never be stale.

One of the most bland and boring Black Metal bands. I don't like or hate them, I'm just indifferent. They took what was already "there" and never tried to put to put their own sound on it and it doesn't change with this album. Same "classic" Black Metal sound over and over again.
