This may be hard for you all to believe, but he was my Grandfather's Best Friend, when my Grandpa passed, the last thing I heard him say was "I can see Danny again"... it broke my heart... Danny is an amazing person, please respect him...

I'm a guitar failure from the 60's. have listened to so many great players through the years. I love it when an unassuming guy comes along and just murders the fretboard. There was nothing that Danny couldn't play better than anyone else...wish he was still here.RIP ! thank you Danny for all that talent with no BS and no ego !

I miss Danny Gatton every single day. He is one of the ultimate players of our time.

Danny was truly gifted, talented and a great musician. I saw him at a place I think was called Gallaghers and I also saw Roy Buchannan at some joint close to Bethesda. Needless to say after seeing them I knew I could never hold a candle to either of these two " Master's of the Telecaster" BUT I still enjoyed their shows and I still after all these years look to them for inspiration AND I play Livestock by Roy and Cruisin Deuces by Danny on my CD player at least once a week May they both rest in peace.

I've seen 92 video/dvd, and heard 158 cd/cassettes of Gatton over the years; way more than anyone ever on youtube; and I can tell you Danny's ferocious soloing dominates and overwhelms anybody.

I've been playing guitar for almost 10 years, just heard of this guy for the first time about two months ago... most fascinating guitar player that I've ever heard.

There are times I am playing the guitar, and I feel like I've come a long way, and then I watch anything Danny Gatton has ever done.. and I feel like I am still in elementary school.. He was just so dang good. He's like a sane version of Junior Brown..

I have been playing 14 years and consider myself well-informed with the guitar, but Danny's resourcefulness as a guitarist was just astounding.

What a bad ass musician. Ya learn this way ya can legitimately play solo and no one gets bored.

You can sitt for hours listening to guitar shredders playing hi-gain solos at a billion notes per second - and then switch to some Danny Gatton video and he blows them all away just by the sheer COOLNESS of his playing!

One of the few videos of Danny I have never seen. He was and still is one of my favorite guitar players. He was also a great guy. Thank you for posting this.

It's been 20 years today, my thoughts and prayers to his family, we were neighbors but I never met you, it would be cool if we could be sitting having a beer right now Danny but I'll have one for you and when my time comes I'll meet you in heaven since I missed you on earth, so here's to your memory...cheers. It was either Vai or Satch that called Gatton the best natural guitarist of all time. They also said Gatton could play like anyone but nobody could play like Gatton.

Danny's legacy is very likely a big reason why I still chase the Muse of Guitar, forever seeking that one Special Chord. Herewith, I wish to give a nod to the late Ronnie Bartelt and Mr. Pat Verdine, two fellow practitioners of Tele-master truths. Long maythey Wave On. T'was a genuine privilege and honor to have shared a stage with all three of these blessed gentlemen!

Like so many artistic masters.. utterly from another world!! May he Rest In Peace ✌️

It takes a different kind of mind to construct the genius that Gatton did so easily, and the same goes for many of the talents we know of that have lived destructively or ended their lives by their own hand. And frankly, when you are the owner of that kind of mind, just imagine how alone you must feel. I'm speaking of things beyond simply the music -- these people are WAY more than just their music.

Albert Lee is fast, Vince Gill is fast but thay have to tip their hats to Danny Gatton the Fastest. I think all guitars that run scales should listen to the scales of Danny, and rethink how the scales of Danny will fit any kind of music. Keep Danny alive, keep the videos coming and watch him close. Just the best. Long live the king,(Danny Gatton). My hero from the early 80s.

Thank you for posting this. I remember when this video was first made available. It appeared in a small add in the back of Guitar Player magazine along with two other instructional videos by DC blues guitarists Jimmy Thackery and Tom Principato. I talked to Jimmy about these videos once and he said that he never made anything from it. It's too bad that they are no longer available. Who ever owns the rights sure turn them over to the Gatton family and re-release them on DVD.

A useful instruction for the self taught rock guitarist. Danny Gatton, gone but never equaled.

Many have used Hendrix as a measuring tool. Once read Jerry Douglas is the Hendrix of the Dobro IMO Danny was the Hendrix of the tele. God given talent and so humble about it had no ego whatsoever ever. He rightfully has his place and respect forever with actual musicians that attempt to actually play an instrument not the Americas Got Talent flavor of the month crowd. RIP Mr. Gatton

That strip on DGs guitar is his "magic dingus box," a jury-rigged device he designed to allow him to control his effects, such as the rotorary speaker for his leslie, etc., his vibrato/tremolo, and so on. Don't worry - Danny didn't need it to play out-of-this-world! Just hand him any old Tele, and that was all he needed.

In Sweden the dial tone used to be an A, used that myself a lot as a young kid, before inventios like tuners came along... Fantasic player easliy one of the best allround teleplayers ever lived!

He was a true great! btw, since no one has landline phones anymore, another tuning trick is to get a B from the 60-cycle hum you hear from electric devices - refrigerator, power line, etc. It's not perfect but it's close.

I have asked myself the same thing, why do so many great musicians have self-destructive habits or kill themselves outright? How could Danny not know how much we loved his music, and him, too? The jazz world is full of promising talents who died young, due to heroin, or by their own hand. Such a shame. DG, we sure do miss you!

The same outfit did an instructional VHS with Jim Thackery and another with Tom Principato. All 3 were are local D.C. area musicians at the time. I never saw the Tom Principato VHS, but enjoyed watching all 3 in the local scene.

Yes, the tone is in your hands as much as anything, in the way you shape your nails, your attack, your tone settings, where you pick and how, and so on. DG could play any guitar and it would still sound like him. "Paws of a bear"? Danny's hands were quite small, but that did not hold him back.

Danny Gatton , Roy Buchanan and Jerry Donahue = three great Tele players .Favourite songs/playing by each guitarist would include... 'One For Lenny' (DG) , 'Five String Blues' (RB) and ' Nothing More' (JD) from his days in Fotheringaye alongside Sandy Denny.

I tune from the Blue Birds in my yard. And a good lube is rub your eyebrows with your fingers and you will slide across the fret board. I have done this unfaithfully for yrs. And it works every time.

About Danny's Picks - The "teardrop" jazz pick Danny used (Fender) is hard to find nowadays, except in the flimsy thin version. However, a Danny devotee from DC turned me on to Clayton picks, easily obtained from the net (Musician's Friend) . The "Clayton Raven" is about 80 guage and has a somewhat rough surface, so do you don't need to scratch it up on your volume pot to prevent slippage.

I recently learned about Mr. Gatton and was intrigued enough to view this and other videos. It's a shame he decided to check out from life because he was an outstanding player and could have been an outstanding teacher.

This guy is the most common sensed thing I ever saw. Every thing he does is so common sensed and a practical nuts and bolts application. All you have to do is practice and develop the skills. Not too hard. It does kinda take that you made every uneconomical mistake you can make to apprectiate this absolutely useful form that rings of Albert Lee and Jimmy Page. All three of these guitar players use a pick and two or three fingers to pick. Danny Gatton /Master.

I can't help but hink Gatton would have really thrived in the time of social media. He didn't get signed back then because they couldn't define him with a genre for so long but that is not even a matter anymore, really such short time later.

Man I walked into the studio. Kicked the skunks out of the strap. Then played on an old beat up guitar to show how easy this is. Then I took it up a level. I then dropped the guitar and walked on out to my car. They came running out yelling "Name your price." I just leaned back turned my head and said "I play for the music only" and drove off.

i once read that Danny was at a guitar workshop and was demonstrating some of his trademark licks and riffs to some decent guitarists and he couldn,t understand why none of them could follow or grasp what he was doing. He didn,t realise what was easy for Danny was impossible for normal guitarists

If I wanna gloat about something I spout off about having actually seen the Master of the Telecaster in a tiny club in Vancouver.It was actually a guitar seminar in the afternoon and a show that night.The seminar was like dying and going to guitar heaven.From the moment Danny started playing we were all eyes locked on the stage with mouths agape. His albums were amazing but his live stuff was TERRIFYING. "The Humbler" is GD right.
